Life has a way of not turning out the way we want. The disciple Peter knew what it was like to go through tough times. He endured threats, punishment, time in jail, beatings, and false words. He had seen enough to know how to stay strong in tough times. So he wrote a survival manual to show how we should act and respond when life isn't fair. His words of wisdom are beacons of hope for making it through hard times. Peter's counsel may surprise you. But it may be just what you need to sustain you when you find that you are between the rock and a hard place. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes an opening reflection, background information, an excerpt of the text (from the New International and New King James versions), exploration questions, inspirational thoughts from Max, and a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and bestselling author of Dave Barry Turns 40 now shows how to age gracefully, taking cues from his beloved and highly intelligent dog, Lucy. Faced with the obstacles and challenges of life after middle age, Dave Barry turns to his best dog, Lucy, to learn how to live his best life. From "Make New Friends" (an unfortunate fail when he can't overcome his dislike for mankind) to "Don't Stop Having Fun" (validating his longtime membership in a marching unit that performs in parades--and even Obama's inauguration), Dave navigates his later years with good humor and grace. Lucy teaches Dave how to live in the present, how to let go of daily grievances, and how to feel good in your own skin. The lessons are drawn from Dave's routine humiliations and stream-of-consciousness accounts of the absurdities of daily life, which will leave you heaving with laughter and recognition. Laugh-out-loud hilarious, whether he's trying to "Pay Attention to the People You Love" (even when your brain is not listening) or deciding to "Let Go of Your Anger," Dave Barry's Lessons From Lucy is a witty and wise guide to joyous living. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days What's happening in the world lately? How can I be happy when so many are not? Is life about learning lessons or passing tests? Following your heart or taking what's served to you? What's real? What matters? Who says? Who cares? How do we know or find our purpose? Many of us ask ourselves these questions, and many more, as we go through our days and try to make sense of our lives. Mike Dooley asks them too, except...his questions get answered. Wisely. Compassionately. Fully. One such answer explained its source, stating that we all have a higher self within that predates this life and will live beyond it, and thus it knows a whole lot more than we do at "street level" about where we've been, why we're here, and what will likely happen next on planet Earth. Life on Earth takes the form of a journal in which Mike asks what's on his mind during pivotal times in his life. As one of today's most respected New Thought leaders and reality theorists, he offers a lofty platform for this wide-ranging dialogue that powerfully expands our perspectives on essential truths, taking on topics such as: - Why and how to see through the "illusions" of life on earth - How to make sense of natural disasters and manmade tragedies - Living deliberately, creating consciously, and finding your power - Wealth, relationships, "past lives," and the evolution of consciousness - The ultimate reason for life on earth, and elsewhere (it's shockingly simple) These are questions asked from the heart with a cautious, even suspicious, mind. Mike explores the subtleties of the replies in depth and detail using his trademark wit and realism, in this intrepid explorer's guide to the jungles of time and space. They very often contain important pieces of wisdom and insight that we are more willing to hear when they're delivered with a laugh. Life Is a Joke: 100 Life Lessons (with Punch Lines) includes 100 hilarious jokes along with the messages that you may or may not realize they carry. For instance, a joke about a tribal mystic and the weather service becomes a pointed parable about being very careful in choosing which experts to trust (or vote for). A joke about a therapist and his patient offers an invaluable insight about the vital importance of open communication. A salesman, a clerk, and a manager find a magic lamp--and learn that whoever speaks first doesn't necessarily win. Written by the brothers who created the phenomenally successful Uncle John's Bathroom Reader series, each entry in Life Is a Joke is contained in a two-page spread. There's an epigram previewing the theme of the joke and lesson, a brief precis of the lesson the joke teaches, and a few takeaway points with ideas for how readers can apply the lesson to their own lives. It's not what happens that makes the difference. How we work with what happens changes everything. The choices we make when we encounter a difficult situation determine the rest of our lives. When we understand what it takes to make skillful choices, we can work with any problem. The book also explores the amazing regenerative powers of the brain, explaining neuroplasticity. As Shapiro learned, new pathways can be developed, demonstrating that no matter our age, we can learn and develop our skills. The book relates a story of discovery, the story of one woman's dawning understanding of the impact of the choices she makes in response to a devastating injury. The lessons Alison conveys are based firmly in Buddhist principles, and the stories she shares are touching and inspiring. They apply to many aspects of our lives, and should have universal appeal while being particularly meaningful to anyone suffering after a stroke. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days An inspirational, uplifting, and life-affirming memoir about passion, resilience and living life to the fullest, from Dr. Dave Williams, one of Canada's most accomplished astronauts. I had dreamt about becoming an astronaut from the time I watched Alan Shepard launch on the first American sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961. Eleven days before my seventh birthday, I committed to a new goal: one day, I would fly in outer space. Dr. Dave has led the sort of life that most people only dream of. He has set records for spacewalking. He has lived undersea for weeks at a time. He has saved lives as an emergency doctor, launched into the stratosphere twice, and performed surgery in zero gravity. But if you ask him how he became so accomplished, he'll say: "I'm just a curious kid from Saskatchewan." Curious indeed. Dr. Dave never lost his desire to explore nor his fascination with the world. Whether he was exploring the woods behind his childhood home or floating in space at the end of the Canadarm, Dave tried to see every moment of his life as filled with beauty and meaning. He learned to scuba dive at only twelve years old, became a doctor despite academic struggles as an undergraduate, and overcame stiff odds and fierce competition to join the ranks of the astronauts he had idolized as a child. There were setbacks and challenges along the way-the loss of friends in the Columbia disaster, a cancer diagnosis that nearly prevented him from returning to space-but through it all, Dave never lost sight of his goal. And when he finally had the chance to fly among the stars, he came to realize that although the destination can be spectacular, it's the journey that truly matters. In Defying Limits, Dave shares the events that have defined his life, showing us that whether we're gravity-defying astronauts or earth-bound terrestrials, we can all live an infinite, fulfilled life by relishing the value and importance of each moment. The greatest fear that we all face is not the fear of dying, but the fear of never having lived. Each of us is greater than we believe. And, together, we can exceed our limits to soar farther and higher than we ever imagined. When legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato saw thirteen-year-old Mike Tyson spar in the ring, he proclaimed 'That's the heavyweight champion of the world'. D'Amato played a huge role in Tyson's formative years, legally adopting him at age sixteen, and shaping him both physically and mentally after years of living in poverty. He would train the young boxer for several years, dying just months before Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. In Iron Ambition, Tyson shares the life lessons that D'Amato passed down to him and reflects on how the trainer's words of wisdom continue to resonate with him outside the ring. The book also chronicles Cus's courageous fight against the mobsters who controlled boxing, revealing more than we've ever know about this singular cultural figure. 'A marvelous banquet with four great presidents who provide lessons for all. Pull up a chair' Warren Buffett Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? In Leadership Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson - to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entry into public life, when their paths were filled with confusion, hope, and fear, we can share their struggles and follow their development into leaders. Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to forever shatter their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged fitted to confront the contours and dilemmas of their times. No common pattern describes the trajectory of leadership. Although set apart in background, abilities and temperament, they shared a fierce ambition, a hunger to succeed beyond expectations. All four, at their best, were guided by a sense of moral purpose that led them at moments of great challenge to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. This seminal work provides a roadmap for aspiring and established leaders. In today's polarized world, these stories of authentic leadership in times of fracture and fear take on a singular urgency. The enforced absence of his endlessly pushy mother Irene - currently consciousness-raising in a Bedouin harem (don't ask) - has manifold and immediate blessings: no psychotherapy, no Italian lessons and no yoga classes. Bliss. For Scotland Street's grown-ups, life throws up some new dilemmas. Matthew makes a discovery that could make him even richer but also leaves him worried. Pat makes one that could make her poorer and her father miserable - unless that uber-narcissist, Bruce, can help her out. And the Duke of Johannesburg, we discover, isn't exactly who he says he is. From what happens behind Edinburgh Airport's luggage carousel to Machiavellian manoeuvrings at the Association of Scottish Nudists, Alexander McCall Smith guides us through the brighter, lighter and frankly unexpected side of Edinburgh life. As ever with his 44 Scotland Street series, his readers will make their own discovery: that its blend of wit and wisdom mark it out as a comedic tour de force. With Really Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz reveals the power of God's sovereignty in the lives of other shady ladies we know by reputation but have rarely studied in depth: Bathsheba, the bathing beauty. Jael, the tent-peg-toting warrior princess. Herodias, the horrible beheader. Tamar, the widow and not-so-timid temptress. Athaliah, the deadly daughter of Jezebel. And three ancient women whose names we do not know but who have much to teach us: the ashamed Adulteress, the bewitching Medium of En Dor, and the desperate Bleeding Woman. Jane was working in a hospital and Anna was a teacher in a middle school. When the class ended, they said goodbye never expecting to meet again. Feeling an unrest and dissatisfaction with the way her life was going, Jane increased her efforts to find a new direction. The search for meaning led her from church to church and from lecture to lecture. Jane was involved with meditation, prayer and classes in spiritual exercises. She decided to try fasting as a means of strengthening her discipline. At this point, the letters began to arrive. Jane was surprised by their appearance and even more so when she was told that she would work with Anna Brown and that these letters were to be published in book form. The letters themselves caused a great deal of soul searching and self analysis. At first, they were met with skepticism, fear, questions, disbelief. As mentors appeared who encouraged the sharing of the letters, they were able to accept what was happening. By a series of events and circumstances which propelled the book forward the book went into several printings and was used in classes and seminars. Anna passed away in 2005.
