Duncan just wants to get to those two wonderful words, like the last sip of a chocolate milk shake: The End. Will he ever find out how the story ends? This bright, warm tale champions determination, friendship, and a love for books. And milk shakes! In  good condition, Published (2010) Two hundred miles south of the Devon coastline, Palestinian freedom fighter Abed Abu Omar and twenty men prepare for their most daring mission yet - the hijack of a supertanker, a five-storey superstructure laden with oil. Meanwhile, in an Elizabethan country house, SBS operative Stratton has been seconded to bodyguard work and is bored by the lack of challenge. Not for long. With the helter-skelter pace that defined Duncan Falconer's brilliant debut THE HOSTAGE, Stratton has been whisked away by helicopter to assist in a daring rescue. THE HIJACK ranges from London to the Gaza Strip, from Riga in Latvia to Jerusalem. With a rich cast of characters from Russian secret service operatives to Al Qaeda terrorists and the Israeli military, the authentic detail and heartstopping narrative will propel Duncan Falconer to the highest class of adventure writers.

In  good condition Published (2010) After a surveillance mission in Sevastopol goes badly wrong, Stratton finds himself doing penance at MI16, the government's clandestine organisation that creates weapons equipment for special forces and the secret service. But Sevastopol has started something. In the North Sea a team of hijackers take over the giant Morpheus oil platform. They are demanding two billion dollars. Inside twenty-four hours. Or the bodies will start falling. With the SBS overstretched and its surveillance team locked down, there is only one option: Stratton and a team of unproven operatives from MI16. Stratton knows he has to redeem himself and he also has his own agenda. One of the men on the rig is an old friend. And Stratton intends to save him. But one of Stratton's team is not what they appear to be. A traitor. With a deadly agenda of their own. And Morpheus is just the beginning. This is the incendiary sixth thriller in the Stratton series by the UK's leading ex-SF professional.

In this, the first biography of Duncan, Martha Jane Brazy offers a compelling new portrait of antebellum life through exploration of Duncan's multifaceted personal networks in both the South and the North. Duncan grew up in an elite Pennsylvania family with strong business ties in Philadelphia. There was little indication, though, that he would become a cosmopolitan entrepreneur who would own over fifteen plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana, collectively owning more than two thousand slaves. With style and substance, Martha Jane Brazy describes both the development of Duncan's businesses and the lives of the slaves on whose labor his empire was constructed. According to Brazy, Duncan was a hybrid, not fully a southerner or a northerner. He was also, Brazy shows, a paradox. Although he put down deep roots in Natchez, his sphere of influence was national in scope. Although his wealth was greatly dependent on the slaves he owned, he predicted a clash over the issue of slave ownership nearly three decades before the onset of the Civil War. Perhaps more than any other planter studied, Duncan contradicts historians' definition of the southern slaveholding aristocracy. By connecting and contrasting the networks of this elite planter and those he enslaved, Brazy provides new insights into the slaveocracy of antebellum America. This book is a kaleidoscope of wild animals, strange and often eccentric tourists, the trials and tribulations of running a poorly equipped lodge in a remote wilderness area and the laughter and tears of working with and living alongside staff from a different background and culture.   Written with great compassion, this is Lesley Cripps Thomson’s story of how she forges a bond with staff who do not want to be told what to door how to do it by a woman – and the hardships they have had to live with, including illness and poverty. She tells of the good times they have had and how, in a crisis, they all pull together.   The Derelict House: Elephants in My Garden, also describes the consequences of interference with nature on the environment, the devastating effect of 9/11 on their American guests, the joy of guests seeing wildlife up close for the first time and the sadness of leaving it all behind   Beautifully illustrated, this charming book brings Africa to life, in all her colours and moods   Please note that we refer the right to close our auctions at any time Please refer to all images for condition, as this form an integral part of the description Payment to be processed within 2 days of auction closing Item will be posted on the first Saturday following receipt of payment.  Empires of Oil: Corporate Oil in Barbarian Worlds by Duncan Clarke (Hardcover)   Revealing the huge challenges that the world's oil empires will face in the 21st century, this razor-sharp analysis of contemporary geopolitics—combined with a deep knowledge of global history—shows exactly why these empires are declining. It explains where the new empires of oil will be around the world, which of the hidden threats and unknown enemies are (and will be) the most serious, and where companies and governments have gone wrong and how they can improve their global strategies. The decline of the American oil empire, the strategy at the Kremlin, the state oil companies in China, and the mini-empires in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America are all explored, and help to explain how the world will change because of global battles over the commodity that underpins our daily lives.

The cooking is based on the French classical style. There is an understanding that the French have total respect for food, that both plated offerings and their ingredients should be real and natural, and that fruit and vegetables should be served fresh, when they are in season, and cooked simply and properly. The Silwood School of Cookery is South Africa’s oldest cookery school, boasting student achievement unmatched by any cookery school in the country. Silwood has, over the past 49 years, earned itself a world-class reputation. Graduates can be found in top kitchens around the world, from Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and Dinner restaurants to Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir, Gordon Ramsay’s numerous establishments and even The French Laundry. But the continent conceals multiple secrets, including the Holy Grail: explanations of its saga over the previous centuries. Africa's Future tells the tale of Africa's economic evolution, revealing unique prisms for understanding the continent's panoramic story, one of triumph over the lasting influences of nature and multiple political tragedies. It explains why from Roman times to 1500 CE Africa went backwards, evolving slowly, growing later, improving recently, and how its modern and archaic economies coexist uneasily today. Modern Africa developed diverse economic pathways to betterment - yet survivalist economies litter the landscape. Its paradox of "subsistence with many faces" coexists amidst the tiny middle class, growing rich, and many more poor expected in the future. Clarke provides fresh and challenging insights into Africa's economies and future, offering seasoned views on a continent of unlocked potential which has witnessed many false dawns. Not "poor" but poorly managed, Africa holds greater promise, its destiny revealed by its history. Features Summary One of the world's leading strategists on global oil exploration puts forward a unique reformulation of Africa's economic past, present and future, revealing the continent's changing political landscape and likely trajectories.. Mendez grew up during a time when most schools were segregated. In the case of California, Hispanics were not allowed to attend schools that were designated for "Whites" only and were sent to so-called "Mexican schools." Although an American citizen who spoke perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a "Whites" only school, an event which prompted her parents to take action, organise various sectors of the Hispanic community and file a lawsuit in the local federal court.
