Dombeya is a flowering plant genus of around 250 species. Traditionally included in the family Sterculiaceae, it is included in the expanded Malvaceae in the APG and most subsequent systematics. These plants are known by a number of vernacular names which sometimes, misleadingly, allude to the superficial similarity of flowering Dombeya to pears or hydrangeas, which are unrelated. They grow chiefly throughout Africa and Madagascar. The generic name Dombeya is in honour of Joseph Dombey, a French botanist and traveller in Peru and Chile (1742-1793).           Dombeya tiliacea commonly known as Little Dog Rose, Cape Wedding Bells Tree and Forest Wild Pear is a South African endemic species with pure white flowers which are carried in large, round clusters on this shrub. It is found in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa. It can tolerate drought, poor soil conditions and light frost. This deciduous shrub or small tree reaches up to 4 meters tall. It has small heart-shaped leaves and clusters of white flowers during late summer. It also makes an outstanding bonsai subject.

The flavourful plant was introduced to the Liguria region by the Romans who enjoyed an early version of pesto as a bread spread. To this day the most prized pesto comes from this area made with this specific variety of basil. This variety of basil has a lower tendency to become bitter after cooking. The plant is also less likely to bolt, meaning it is less likely to flower quickly in hot weather. It has large soft bright green and mildly crinkled leaves Tasting note: Aromatic & minty Oregano can be traced back to as early as 3000 BC when it was used by the Assyrians. During Greek and Roman times, it was one of the most commonly used herbs for health and medicinal purposes. Oregano's name can be credited to the Greeks. It is a combination of the Greek words "oros" and "ganos" which together mean "joy of the mountains". It is a shrub-like herb with multiple-branched stems with narrow, arrow-shaped, soft, fuzzy textured leaves. As the plant grows, the more mature stems become woody at the base. It is a perennial plant and is often grown for 3-4 years, but in cooler climates, it is often grown as an annual. In the late summer, small white flowers bloom from the flower spikes (bracts) at the top of the stems. Typically, Oregano is harvested just before the flowers bloom, when the flavour and aroma is at their peak Tasting note: Woody & camphor notes Sage is a herb that is prized for its strong herbal aroma and earthy flavour and can be used fresh or dried. This evergreen shrub is part of the mint family. It has oval, dusty grey-green leaves with woody stems. Because of the fine, velveteen hair-like projections on sage leaves, they have a slightly fuzzy or fluffy appearance. It is a perennial plant that grows about 60cm tall. The flowers are borne in spikes that will attract bees & butterflies to your garden. It originated in the Mediterranean and has a long history of medicinal and culinary use. Sage is often mentioned as the herb of immortality, domestic virtue, health, and wisdom. Sage was a sacred ceremonial herb of the Romans. It has been cultivated for both culinary and medicinal purposes for many centuries in Europe Tasting note: Hints of earthy pine About Sow Delicious In 2013, Vanessa Jacobs set out to find the simplest way to grow a garden fit for a foodie, giving people the opportunity to proudly plant a garden that is Sow Delicious! TANSY - Perennial, Tanacetum vulgare Tansy is a lesser known, yet attractive flower. Native to Europe, these attractive, long lasting flowers are easy to grow. They look great both in the flower garden and in dried flower arrangements. Tansy is heat and drought tolerant, and requires little attention. Originating in Europe where it grows wild, Tansy is a member of the Thistle family. Many gardeners use Tansy as a companion plant. Tansies are a natural, organic insect repellent. The leaves give off a stinky, strongly pungent odor that the bugs just don't like. Tansy grows 90-120cm. The plant produces clusters of flat, button shaped, yellow leaves in mid-summer. It blooms in summer above thorny leaves. Tansy has a long history of medicinal, culinary, and other uses. The leaves were once used in flavoring. They were also used to produce medicinal "Oil of Tansy". Important note: Tansy is poisonous in large quantities. Tansy is great in the flower bed as borders, edging, or in clumps. They are also good for fresh bouquets and as dried flowers. Dried leaves and flowers are used as a potpourri. The leaves also have use as an insect repellent. Tansy are grown from seeds in the spring. Sow Tansy seeds directly into your flower garden after all danger of frost. CLICK ON SHIELD TO VIEW OUR OTHER ITEMS:

Haworthia is a large genus of small succulent plants, mostly endemic to South Africa. Like Gasteria and Aloe, they are members of the family Asphodeloideae and they generally resemble miniature aloes, except in their flowers, which are characteristic in appearance. Horticulturally they are popular rockery garden and container plants. Typically they range from 4 cm to 20 cm high, depending on the species, though the inflorescences of some species may exceed 40 cm. Solitary or clump-forming most species have firm, tough leaves, usually dark green in color, whereas others are softer and are window plants with translucent panels through which sunlight can reach internal photosynthetic tissues. Their flowers are small, white and very similar between species. But their leaves show wide variations even within one species. The charm of Haworthias is in their small size, ease of growth, and the almost infinite variation of their delightful leaves. Haworthias rarely require a pot larger than 10cm in diameter making them ideally suited for a bright windowsill. Perhaps the biggest problem you will encounter when growing Haworthias is that they tend to be addictive! Haworthia viscosa is a very attractive South African indigenous succulent with trifariously arranged leaves. The leaves are rough and have pungent tips. It is a proliferous species, which forms clumps. In nature they grow in all kinds of situations and in the garden they are happy in the shade, in the middle of the garden, or in rockery crevices exposed to full sun. Haworthia viscosa is widely distributed in the eastern, central and southern Karoo and Little Karoo and it also extends into the lower Gamtoos Valley.

Aristolochia is a large plant genus with over 500 species that is the namesake of the family Aristolochiaceae. Its members are commonly known as birthwort, pipevine or Dutchman's pipe and are widespread and occur in the most diverse climates. Aristolochia is a genus of evergreen and deciduous woody vines and herbaceous perennials. Aristolochia fimbriata, the White Veined Hardy Dutchman's Pipe, is an excellent hanging basket or container plant. Its small stem, make it more suitable than other Aristolochia for basket culture. This smaller tropical vine climbs to only 1-2 meters. It is native to Argentina, Paraguay and Southern Brazil. A rare find. A must for those who collect the unusual. It always attracts the attention by the strange flowers that are produced amongst the white-veined leaves.           Flowers are solitary and are formed under the leaves. The cute little 2.5cm to 5cm long yellow and brown flowers, resembling miniature elephant trunks, are produced along the stem all summer. The flowers are green on the tube, brown on the mouth entrance and veined purple brown inside. The mouth entrance has a bizarre and striking arrangement of hairs that stick out like a rough material. This is one of the most attractive foliage plants you can grow. This really cool deciduous groundcover Dutchman's Pipe spreads out to 75cm on little green stems. Each rounded leaf is medium green, highlighted with dramatic silver veining. In winter, the stems retreat back to the base if cultivated outside, so no invasive problems. Hardiness zones °C/5°F,-5°C/25°F) in winter. Aristolochia fimbriata likes to grow in a light and airy place, but not in direct sunlight. Keep summer temperatures from °C and winter temperatures above 10°C. Water regularly during the growth period, once or twice a week. Water no more than once a week during winter. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every third watering throughout the growing season. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil.

PHILODEDRON SELLOUM   Most philodendrons are climbers, but not this one. Philodendron Selloum (also called split leaf philodendron) grows as a large semi woody shrub with enormous glossy leaves and a single erect unbranched stem. The robust stem bears stout aerial rootlets between conspicuous leaf scars. The leaves are up to 0.9 m long, deeply dissected into many wavy-margined lobes and held on long petioles. Older and larger plants develop leaves that are more deeply dissected and more ruffled. Specimens grown indoors rarely flower. Philodendron can get as large as 4.6 m tall and 4.6 m wide with a stem 17.8 cm or more in diameter.   Philodendron grows best in fairly moist, well drained, fertile soil. It requires little care except occasional grooming should lower leaves become discoloured, and watering in times of dry weather. Take care in placing, though, lest it encroach on walkways or grow too close to buildings; a small specimen will get big! Light: Philodendrons don't like full sun. Grow tree philodendron in dappled or partial shade. Indoors, position in bright light, but not direct sun. Sunlight filtered through a curtain is good. Moisture: Not at all drought tolerant, tree philodendron should get regular watering. Keep the soil moderately moist by watering regularly. In the winter, keep the soil just barely moist. House plants should be misted regularly if the air is very dry.   View our other items by clicking on the shield:

Common Names: Christmas Holly, English Holly, European Holly, Common Holly or Holly This tall, pyramidal, evergreen tree may also be grown as a large shrub. Its evergreen, spiny foliage is leathery and glossy. Insignificant, though fragrant, flowers bloom in spring followed by red drupes that attract birds. Ilex aquifolium is the most widely grown holly but there are 500 to 600 other species worldwide. English holly is a hardy tree or shrub, capable of surviving in most conditions, except where it is extremely wet. Its distinctive spiny leaves deter grazing animals and protect birds from predators as they feed on its bright red berries. It is dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female plants. Holly is an ideal hedging plant for many reasons. It is slow growing, so needs little maintenance, its dense form and prickly leaves are a good intruder deterrent, its berries on pollinated female plants provide food for native birds throughout the winter and it can be trimmed into a superb formal decorative hedge which provides an excellent windbreak and is also pollution resistant. Holly is also a very popular choice as a bonsai subject, requiring little effort once established.

Bulls Blood beetroot is a magnificent dual purpose variety known for its deep red coloured leaves. This old variety has been used for both ornamental and culinary use since Victorian times. It was listed pre-1900 in England and is probably the only decorative-leafed Victorian beetroot variety surviving. This useful crop can be used at any stage of growth, harvest the leaves for baby leaf, in mixed salads or use steamed like spinach, or the roots can be left to grow like any other beetroot. Today, Bull's Blood is the variety used by the commercial growers for both baby leaf and mixed salad leaves. The leaves are broader than other beetroot varieties, more flavourful than other red accent crops, they can be harvested for baby leaf salads in as little as 35 days. Left to mature they have a particularly sweet taste when cooked, while the medium-sized spherical roots are tender and have a great flavour especially when young. Harvest in 60 days.   Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Swiss Chard originates from a wild version of beetroot that naturally grew in the Mediterranean. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle wrote about chard in the fourth century B.C. The original variety has been traced back to the largest Mediterranean island, Sicily not Switzerland as you might think. The name 'Swiss' comes from the Swiss botanist Koch who determined the scientific name of this plant in the 19th century. Rhubarb Red Chard is distinguished by its bouquet of wrinkled, slightly savoyed rich green leaves and bright red-coloured stems. The leaves grow upright and tall from a dense rosette of ribbed stems. It has subtle earthy flavours along with slight notes of tang, due to its betalain pigment content Tasting note: Earthy & salty About Sow Delicious In 2013, Vanessa Jacobs set out to find the simplest way to grow a garden fit for a foodie, giving people the opportunity to proudly plant a garden that is Sow Delicious!
