Hard cover with dust cover; 189 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg.   'At the age of nineteen he married Ann Maw and two years later he was ordained as a Methodist minister and appointed chaplain to Sephton's party, and came with his wife and baby daughter on the Aurora to South Africa under the British Settler scheme of 1820. For most young men so great a responsibility in a strange and hostile country would have been overwhelming, but in the words of his friend, William Boyce, "though young in years. he was never, strictly speaking, a young man." This account of the life and work of the Rev. William Shaw has been compiled of extracts from his letters and journals. It provides a vivid, first hand account of the conditions in which the settlers found themselves in the land of their adoption, and it tells of Shaw's meeting with the Dutch Trekkers, the African tribesmen, the government officials, the slaves, the Hottentots and the many other peoples in this broad corner of the continent. The events in themselves might be of interest, but it is the character and personality of Shaw himself which illuminates the record for he brought to everything he did a sober judgement, a human warmth, and an invincible faith in God's providence.'

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Georges and Pauline Vanier were the parents of Jean Vanier, the co-founder of the L'Arche communities. They lived an intensely spiritual life, influenced mainly by the Carmelite tradition. Mercy Within Mercy is the warmly-told story of their life together through World War Two and the second half of the 20th Century, drawing on many letters and journals by Georges and Pauline themselves and those closest to them. An incredible thirst for God can be seen in the lives of this couple, who were always striving in spite of (and through) human imperfection. The excerpts from letters and journals in this volume show a rare example of the contemplative life and struggles in prayer of an active and prominent married couple. The Vanier story is unique in that it forms a direct link back to the spiritual teaching that includes St. Therese and the Carmelite tradition in its emphasis on simplicity, trust in God's love, and self-abandonment to the mercy of God. After Pauline's death in 1991, an investigation began into the possible introduction of their cause for beatification as a married couple. David Livingstone: The Unexplored Story by Stephen Tomkins (2013) David Livingstone has gone down in history as a fearless explorer and missionary, hacking his way through the jungles of Africa to bring light to the people and also to free them from slavery. But who was he, and what was he actually like? He was an extraordinary character according to biographer Stephen Tomkins unbelievably bad at personal relationships, at least with white people, with infinite self-belief, courage and restlessness. He was a flawed but indomitable idealist.  Fascinating new evidence about Livingstones life, and his struggles have come to light in the letters and journals he left behind, now accessible to us for the first time through spectral imaging. These form a large part of the source material for this excellent biography, which provides an honest and balanced account of the real man behind the Victorian icon. 192 p. 0.76 cm

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days From New York Times bestselling author Amy Tan, a memoir on her life as a writer, her childhood and the symbiotic relationship between fiction and emotional memory. In Where the Past Begins, bestselling author of The Joy Luck Club and The Valley of Amazement Amy Tan is at her most intimate in revealing the truths and inspirations that underlie her extraordinary fiction. By delving into vivid memories of her traumatic childhood, confessions of self-doubt in her journals and heartbreaking letters to and from her mother, she gathers together evidence of all that made it both unlikely and inevitable that she would become a writer. Through spontaneous storytelling, she shows how a fluid fictional state of mind unleashed near-forgotten memories that became the emotional nucleus of her novels. Tan explores shocking truths uncovered by family memorabilia - the real reason behind an I.Q. test she took at age six, why her parents lied about their education, mysteries surrounding her maternal grandmother - and, for the first time publicly, writes about her complex relationship with her father, who died when she was fifteen. Written with candour and characteristic humour, Where the Past Begins takes readers into the idiosyncratic workings of her writer's mind, a journey that explores memory, imagination, and truth.
