Jane was working in a hospital and Anna was a teacher in a middle school. When the class ended, they said goodbye never expecting to meet again. Feeling an unrest and dissatisfaction with the way her life was going, Jane increased her efforts to find a new direction. The search for meaning led her from church to church and from lecture to lecture. Jane was involved with meditation, prayer and classes in spiritual exercises. She decided to try fasting as a means of strengthening her discipline. At this point, the letters began to arrive. Jane was surprised by their appearance and even more so when she was told that she would work with Anna Brown and that these letters were to be published in book form. The letters themselves caused a great deal of soul searching and self analysis. At first, they were met with skepticism, fear, questions, disbelief. As mentors appeared who encouraged the sharing of the letters, they were able to accept what was happening. By a series of events and circumstances which propelled the book forward the book went into several printings and was used in classes and seminars. Anna passed away in 2005. Jane continues to believe in the love of God and the workings of spirit. Features Summary Jane Palzere and Anna Brown met while attending a class in spiritual development. Excerpt from Dedication of a Memorial to Reverend John Tucke, 1702-1773: Star Island, Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire, July 29, 1914 During the spring of 1914 the work of construction proceeded under the superintendence of Mr. Sullivan. No expense was spared to make the monument perfect, both in material and workmanship. Each of the large blocks fitted accurately, and was put in place without the least accident under the direction of Edgar Knowl ton, superintendent of the company. The monument is ten feet square at the base, and forty-six feet, six inches, in height. The inscription, containing about six hundred letters, square sunk one quarter of an inch, in smooth surface finely rubbed, occupies thirteen feet vertically of one Side of the shaft. The obelisk is in large blocks, and is designed after the Egyptian dimensions established as a standard thousands of years ago. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The "Gateway to Arabic Handwriting Book" has been written as part of the "Gateway to Arabic" series with a view to giving students the opportunity to learn, practise and acquire proficiency in a fluid style of Arabic handwriting. It is recommended that students should already have completed at least Book One of the "Gateway" series and be familiar with the Arabic alphabet before embarking upon this book. Although a number of handwriting styles are used in the Middle East, the style taught in this book, namely ruq'ah, is the most widespread and the easiest to learn. Compared to the printed style of Arabic, which is termed naskh, ruq'ah offers the advantage of being much quicker to write. The book has been organised so that identical naskh and ruq'ah texts appear on facing pages for ease of comparison and contrast. The first section sets out the letters of the Arabic alphabet in all their forms: initial, medial, final and isolate. The precise direction and sequence of pen movements for each letter have been clearly indicated through the use of numbered arrows. Having completed the presentation of the alphabet in all its forms, the book then provides the student with the chance to learn the ruq'ah ligatures and practise copying complete words and phrases, most of which would already be familiar to the Muslim student. A further opportunity for the reinforcement of handwriting skills is given through the copying of selective ayat (verses of the Qur'an). A translation of these verses is included on the page on which they appear. Features Summary Students of Arabic often begin by learning the more laborious, printed style of handwriting known as naskh. Part of the "Gateway to Arabic" series, this book teaches the quicker... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194) was one of the most brilliant, original and versatile thinkers of the twelfth century. Herbert was Thomas Becket's closest confidant, a theologian, biblical commentator, historian, letter-writer and Hebrew scholar; he wrote a Life of St Thomas unlike any other contemporary biography, produced one of the most visually-arresting illuminated Bible books of his age, and composed a commentary on the Psalms inspired by Jewish scholarship. His uncompromising character, and the originality and complexity of his thought, meant that Herbert's works were largely ignored during his lifetime and forgotten for centuries, but more recently they have begun to receive the attention and approval that their author insisted they deserved. The chapters in this book, the first to be devoted to Herbert's life and works, examine his eventful and troubled life, his remarkable corpus of works, and how they came to be neglected and rediscovered. They provide an introduction to his life, writings and legacy, direction to existing scholarship on the subject, and new insights on, interpretations of and discoveries about an idiosyncratic representative of the "twelfth-century renaissance". MICHAEL STAUNTON is Associate Professor of History at University College Dublin. Contributors: Julie Barrau, Laura Cleaver, Matthew Doyle, Anne J. Duggan, Christopher de Hamel, Sabina Flanagan, Michael Staunton, Nicholas Vincent. Features Summary In-depth study of an important writer and close associate of Becket. Hardback. Afrikaans. Nasionale Pers. 1935. ISBN: N/A. 312pp. Small squarish 8vo; original grey cloth, lettered in black on spine, with black letters and cannon device to upper cover; pp. (viii) + 312; two portrait plates. First Edition. In good condition. Very good, clean copy. (Nienaber I, p. 254) "At the battle of Tabanyama (20.1.1900), a prologue to the battle of Spioenkop (24.1.1900), Slegtkamp won special recognition. When the burghers evacuated a hill in the Tabanyama mountain range after a heavy bombardment, and the right flank of the Boers was exposed, Slegtkamp and two fellow scouts, Albert de Roos and Jack Hindon, climbed the hill on their own initiative and subjected the left flank of the British soldiers to heavy fire. Under the impression that the hill was strongly garrisoned, the British soldiers retreated. The morale of the other burghers now being strengthened, they reoccupied the hill. Thus the way was paved for the brilliant victory at Spioenkop four days later.... Throughout his life he supported the republican ideal and in the late thirties he joined the Ossewa-Brandwag, of which, despite his advanced age, he was an active member, later becoming general-in-chief on the Highveld. He spent his last years peacefully in his home town, Middlelburg. Slegtkamp was short and thin. Restless and at times quick-tempered, he was nevertheless a fearless man who, although he could not easily adapt to peace conditions, identified himself completely with the fate of his adopted country.
