About the product 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 248, incl. index; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition."The arrival at the Cape of Good Hope, early in 1834, of Sir John Herschel and Thomas Maclear initiated for them a period of intense scientific endeavour. Herschel was graced by a name which, from the astronomical discoveries of his father, Sir William Herschel, was already a household word. The younger Herschel was arguably the most famous scientist ever to spend a significant portion of his life in the beneficial clime of the Cape. Much has been written about Herschel's scientific work at the Cape. The picture is far from complete, however.. This gives some justification for the publication of what is in fact the majority of the letters written by Herschel during his residence at the Cape. For Maclear the situation is quite the reverse. Completely unknown on his arrival at the Cape, he had steadily to build up fame on the foundations of industry and public service. By the time of his death in 1879 his repute was such that his passing moved even the Cape Parliament to a salutation.. Yet the nature of the man is hardly known in the country of his adoption, and his contributions are largely forgotten in his chosen profession. Although a full-scale biography is required to do justice to Maclear, the diaries and letters reproduced here will go some way towards establishing his character." Maclear&Herschel. In the heart of Outeniqualand, where sunbirds tumble in fynbos redolent of herbs and honey and where rocky outcrops at the very edge of Africa crash into the ocean, a little farm nestles in the verdant hills. In true fairy-tale style, through an unexpected legacy from a little-known aunt, author Gillian Rattray and her husband Peter were able to purchase this farm and so to embark on their long-cherished dream of retirement in the country. A Cape Country Chronicle is an evocative journal of life at Fairview Farm: industrious days, rich in incident and bustling with activity; the sustained invasion by builders and guests; and the planting of a miniature Sissinghurst - all are recorded with humour and enlivened by the strokes of a gentle and affectionate pen. Numerous watercolours illuminate the text. With sure, vivid brushwork Gillian Rattray captures the essence of the rich bird and insect life and pays tribute to the floral kingdom of the south-eastern Cape. In this engaging chronicle of country living, the reader is drawn into the unhurried rhythms of life at Fairview and is invited to share in its subtle pleasures. About the product Edited by L. A. Hewson and F. G. van der Riet. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; pp. (iv) + 106, incl. index; 2 plates. Merest trace of foxing to edges. Near-fine condition.'The Rev. John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and one of the pioneer missionaries of the Eastern Cape, left among his papers an unfinished manuscript, here published in full for the first time under the title The Journal of Harry Hastings, Albany Settler. It consists of a narrative mostly in diary form of the experiences of a young British settler of 1820 whom the writer calls"Harry Hastings": the four-month voyage from London to Algoa Bay, the trek to the settlement near Bathurst and the difficult months that followed. Harry Hastings is to be regarded not only as an alter ego of John Ayliff, but also as a typical British settler, a"rooinek"transplanted from Whitechapel to the Zuurveld. The narrative offers a lively and entertaining account of settler life, and a unique fund of information about the first years of the Albany Settlement.'
