Book in still in good condition - >>>    Media coverage of this book has been so extensive as to make any summary almost superfluous.   It tells, in unbearable detail, of the humiliation, systematic butchery, torture and burning alive of 1,600 Jewish men, women and children in the Polish town of Jedwabne on 10 July 1941.    This atrocity was perpetrated not by the Nazi's but by their Polish neighbours who had, since June, begun to starve out the Jewish population.   It did not involve any German units, though the occupiers and the Waffen SS had made no secret of their own homicidal intentions towards Polish Jews.   The joyous, demented sadists of Jedwabne were Poles to a man (and woman).     * Poland * War Crimes * Second World War * 2nd * II * Two *  *N.B.*   If you buy more books from me you only pay R 6 postage each on the additional books – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days From the shtetl to the New World, from failed revolutions in tsarist Russia to the Holocaust, these Yiddish tales illuminate a lost world from a woman's distinctive perspective. For decades, stories by Yiddish women writers were available only to those who spoke the "mother tongue" of Eastern European Jews. This translation brings some of the "lost" women writers of the golden age of Yiddish to English-speaking readers. Their stories range from the wryly humorous-a girl seeking a wet nurse for her cousin brings him to a shiksa, with dire consequences-to the bittersweet, as a once-idealistic revolutionary now sees her hopes for humanity as "fantasy." The title is from a poem that describes a widow arguing with a storm that threatens her harvest. It is a metaphor for the Holocaust, whose dark cloud was rising. Arguing with the Storm is a joy to read and a tribute to all those women, who, in arguing with the storm, fought to protect their families and way of life. The anthology includes works by Sarah Hamer-Jacklyn, Bryna Bercovitch, Anne Viderman, Malka Lee, Frume Halpern, Rochel Bruches, Paula Frankel-Zaltzman, Chava Rosenfarb, and Rikuda Potash. Rhea Tregebov teaches creative writing at the University of British Columbia and is the author of six critically acclaimed books of poetry, most recently (alive): Poems New and Selected. She collected these tales with the help of the Winnipeg Women's Yiddish Reading Circle. Features Summary From the shtetl to the Holocaust, lost voices from a rich and lively tradition. The state of the nation has changed.  With much of the country now underwater, assets and weapons siezed by the government - itself run by the sinister Authority - and war raging in South America and China, life in Britain is unrecognisable.  Most appallingly, in this world of scant resources and hard industrial labour, the Authority insist all women should be fitted with contraceptive devices. In The Carhullan Army, Sister, as she is known, delivers her story from the confines of a prison cell.  She tells of her attempts to escape this repressive world and her journey to join the commune of women at Carhullan, a group living as 'unofficials' in a fortified farm beyond the most remote Cumbrian fells.  The journey is a challenge, but arrival is only the beginning of her struggle. A testament to the triumph of the individual in dire circumstances, and a novel of extraordinary imagination, range and emotional complexity, The Carhullan Army has the visionary intensity and quality of great dystopian fiction. Soft cover, excellent condition.  209 pages, all intact.

When Helen is summoned by a former student to view a cache of newly discovered seventeenth-century Jewish documents, she enlists the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student as impatient as he is charming, and embarks on one last project: to determine the identity of the documents' scribe, the elusive "Aleph." Electrifying and ambitious, The Weight of Ink is about women separated by centuries--and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Every season, dozens of African American basketball players pack up their sneakers to play and live in Israel. They eat Israeli food, navigate Israeli hustle and bustle, experience cultural and religious customs in the world's only Jewish country, and voluntarily expose themselves to the omnipresent threat of violence in the volatile Middle East. Some players are both Black and Jewish by birth. Others choose to convert to Judaism while residing in Israel. Some go so far as to obtain Israeli citizenship, enlist in the Israeli Army, marry Israeli women, and stay long after their playing careers end. Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land, is the first book to provide an in-depth exploration and analysis of the experiences of African American basketball players in Israel from the 1970s till today. Author David A. Goldstein examines how they end up in the country in the first place, the multitude of distinctive aspects of their lives there, the challenges and difficulties they face, and the reasons some choose to return to Israel year after year. In some cases they even decide to stay in Israel permanently. Alley-Oop to Aliyah not only deals with basketball and its impact on Israel, but it delves into emotion-laden issues of race, religion, identity, and politics, primarily through the eyes of the players themselves, based on more than forty extensive first-person interviews Goldstein, a sports journalist of half-Israeli descent, conducted. Their stories and their impact on Israel are at the very heart of this revealing book that is about more than just a game. Features Summary Discover why Israel has become a popular destination for African American basketball players. The current conflict in the Middle East began long before the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. It originated when Abraham sinned, distorting God's promise that he and his heirs would make a great nation and inherit the land now called The Holy Land. A historical and political account, "Seeds of Turmoil" clearly explains the biblical story of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar and the ensuing sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau, whose choices formed the world's three most influential religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This fascinating insight into the beginnings of the conflict also explains what about the land is so important today. In addition, Wright sheds light on the conflicting Jewish, Christian, and Islamic perspectives and answers the question, Does God play favorites? Subtitle: My Quest to Become the First Female Maasai Warrior Author: Mindy Bugnor Publisher: Allen and Unwin (2013) ISBN-10: 1743314477 ISBN-13: 9781743314470 Condition: Very Good. The cover has some light scratches and a bit of wear to edges and corners. Binding: Softcover Pages: 273 Dimensions: 23.5 x 15.5 x 2.3 cm +++ by Mindy Bugnor +++ Customer Reviews Tired of her job, bored of waiting for her university application to be processed, Mindy Budgor decided to make some changes. Driven by cultural curiosity, passion, fearlessness and a set of Jewish parents breathing fire down her neck, she bought herself a ticket to Kenya to volunteer on a building project in the Maasai Mara. After two weeks of working, sharing meals, and hiking at dawn with the Maasai, Mindy asked the chief why there were no female warriors. His terse reply -- that women 'aren't strong enough or brave enough to do men's work' -- hit a nerve. Mindy and her fellow volunteer Becca lobbied the chief to train them to become Maasai warriors. Trading in their Egyptian cotton pillowcases, cushy mattresses, down-filled quilts and matzah ball soup for leaf beds, tattered wool blankets and goat head soup, Mindy and Becca began a new routine of slaughtering goats and cows, spear training, buffalo hunting and drinking animal blood. Ultimately they transformed the chief's notions of female strength and courage and were inducted into the clan, becoming the world's first female Maasai warriors.
