The Hidden Thread is a journey of revelation about the relationship between Soviet Russia and South Africa, hidden for most of its length. The story is told with insight and depth by Irina Filatova and Apollon Davidson, who have had a decades long association researching and writing on Russian and South African politics and history. This insightful work follows the often surprising twists and turns of the history of South Africas relationship with Russia and its people which started in the eighteenth century and is still very much alive today. The story evolves from the Russian volunteers who fought alongside the Boers in the Anglo-Boer War to South Africans who participated in the Russian revolution and civil war; from the Russian Jewish immigration to South Africa to the close involvement of the South African communists in the Communist International; from the Soviet consulates in South Africa and the activities of South Africas Friends of the Soviet Union Society during the Second World War to the vicissitudes of the Cold War and the hot war in Angola; from the SACP and ANCs relations with the USSR to the volte-face of perestroika and South Africas transition and to todays business, political, cultural and sometimes criminal connections between Russians and South Africans. Author: Peter Bayer Publisher: Sun Dragon Press () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 388 Dimensions: 22.8 x 15.2 x 2.2 cm +++ by Peter Bayer +++ The Last Mentsch is a work of historical fiction told by Yitzhak, the son of Theodore Isaacs. It covers a period of almost 125 years in a time of tumultuous political, economic and social change in Southern Africa. A Jewish child is hustled out of Europe in the mid-nineteenth century to escape increasing waves of anti-Semitic ‘justice’ meted out in the ghettos and schtetls of Europe, and comes to South Africa. " The Last Mentsch is a rich, poignant and often hilarious celebration of story-telling. It effortlessly combines the historical novel and the picaresque to create a portrait of South Africa's fledgling Jewish community, of the emergent nation and a range of endearing and infuriating eccentrics. It is among the most sweeping, audacious and lively novels every written about this country" - Professor Michael Titlestad University of the Witwatersrand. Shortlisted for the European Union Literary Award, the judges said that the  The Last Mentsch  "...gallops us into a fast-paced roller coaster of immigrant survival... superb!".   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.   1992 1st Edition 303pp Hardcover with B&W photos Book Very Good, DJ Very Good some very minor shelfwear, contents very clean and crisp, tightly bound. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms. Photos.
