Until the lions are taught to write, history will always be written by the hunters'. In the early planning stages of Freedom Park Robin Binckes participated as a member of the history subcommittee. The amount of debate and argument, much of it heated, astounded him. Practically every event discussed was interpreted from diametrically differing viewpoints. One of the most controversial topics was the Great Trek, the 1836 Boer exodus from the Cape Colony. Traditionally writers on the subject have covered the event from a perspective not only of 'white history' but predominantly of 'Afrikaner history'. It has always been seen as 'an Afrikaner event'. It was anything but. As the Great Trek and the events leading up to it involved every section of the population-Zulu, Sotho, Ndebele, Xhosa, Khoisan, Khoikhoi, Colored, British, English-speaking South African and Boer-it is time to portray the trek in that light, in the context of a unbiased, modern South Africa. Like most history the dots are all connected; it is impossible to separate the Great Trek from events which took place as far back as the Portuguese explorers because those early events shaped the backdrop to the causes of the Great Trek. Most writers have specialized in the trek itself whereas Binckes has adopted a broader approach that studies the impact of the earlier white incursions and migrations-Portuguese, Dutch, French and British-on southern Africa, to create a better understanding of the trek and its causes. Drawing heavily on eyewitness accounts wherever possible, he has consolidated these with the perspectives of leading historians, the final product being an objective and comprehensive record of one of the seminal events in South African history. This book shows that the Afrikaner was, is, and always will be, an important player in South African society, but it shows him as part of a bigger picture. The author distances himself from the noble characters stereotyped for the past two centuries and portrays them in their true light: wonderful, courageous people with human feelings, strengths and failings. Robin Binckes was born in East Griqualand, South Africa in April 1941. After matriculating in Umtata, Transkei, he did his national service at the South African Navy Gymnasium, Saldanha Bay. In 1970 he opened his own PR company to promote major sporting events ranging from international cricket to Formula One Grand Prix during the period of sports isolation. In 1990 he started The Gansbaai Fishing Company and spent ten years in the food industry. During the violence that swept South Africa in 1993 he volunteered as a peace monitor in the townships. Sparked by the passion of the late historical orator David Rattray, he qualified in 2002 as a historical tour guide, conducting tours in the Johannesburg-Pretoria region through his company 'Spear of the Nation'. His first book, Canvas under the Sky, a best-selling novel on the Great Trek, was published in 2011 and continues to fuel lively debate. PAPERBACK: 584 PAGES WITH 80 B/W ILLUSTRATIONS & MAPS Published October 2013

Starring Richard Kollmar (12 half-hour episodes on 6 CDs). Created by author Jack Boyle, Boston Blackie was a master safecracker and hardened criminal who served time in a California prison. Rehabilitated, he decided to use his knowledge of the underworld to fight crime as an amateur detective. Known as “an enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend” Boston Blackie’s exploits were adapted to films, radio, and television. Chester Morris, who had played Boston Blackie in a series of B-Movies for Columbia, originated the character on radio in . By , Richard Kollmar took over the title role in a radio series syndicated by Frederic W. Ziv. Over 200 radio episodes were produced between and . While investigating the cases, Blackie would invariably encounter harebrained Police Inspector Faraday (Maurice Tarplin) and always solve the crime before Faraday could. Initially, friction surfaced in the relationship between Blackie and Faraday, but as the series continued, Faraday recognized Blackie's talents and occasionally even requested his assistance. Blackie dated Mary Wesley (Jan Miner & Lesley Woods), and for the first half of the series, his best pal Shorty (Tony Barrett) was on hand. Boston Blackie transitioned to TV in starring Kent Taylor as Blackie, Lois Collier as Mary and Frank Orth as Inspector Faraday. Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll made their radio debut January , as the comedic, blackface characters Sam 'n' Henry. On March they introduced Amos 'n' Andy, which went on to become one of the most popular and longest running programs in radio history. During the height of its popularity almost the entire country listened to the 15-minute, Monday through Friday adventures of Amos 'n' Andy. Department stores open in the evening piped in the broadcasts so shoppers wouldn't miss an episode; movie theaters scheduled their features to end just prior to the start of Amos ‘n’ Andy so they too could pipe it in. The characters were members of The Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge, of which George Stevens was "The Kingfish". Amos and Andy ran the Fresh-Air Taxi Company, with the more stable, married Amos doing most of the work while Andy chased girls. In , after quarter-hour episodes, it switched to a half-hour weekly comedy. While the five-a-week show often had a quiet, easygoing feeling, the new version was a brassy Hollywood-style production, complete with studio audience, full cast of supporting actors and full orchestra. In the new version, Amos became a minor character to the more dominant Andy and Kingfish duo. The new Amos 'n' Andy Show endured for the next twelve years as one of the most popular weekly programs on radio. Subtitle: US Intervention, Series: Africa@War Series Volume 9 Author: Peter Baxter Publisher: Helion and Company / 30 Degrees South Publishers () ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 64 Dimensions: 29.6 x 21 x.5 cm +++ by Peter Baxter +++ The end of the Cold War introduced an altered global dynamic. The old bond of East/West patronage in Africa was broken, weakening the first crop of independent revolutionary leadership on the continent who no longer had the support of one or other of the superpowers. One of the only effective armed resistance movements mounted against European colonization in Africa took place in Somalia, which was suppressed only after enormous military expenditure. The crisis in Somalia, that began to take shape with the ousting of military leader Mohammed Siad Barre, during the early years of the 's forced both the United States and the United Nations to adapt their collective military policy toward the challenges of peacekeeping, and peace enforcement, in a human environment only dimly understood, extremely austere in terms of local infrastructure and with a warring clan leadership. This book tells the story of the International intervention that took place in Somalia, the successes, failures and lessons learned.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.
