Horticultural perlite

Top sales list horticultural perlite

South Africa
Perlite is a unique volcanic mineral which expands from four to twenty times its original volume when it is quickly heated to a temperature of approximately 1600-1700 degrees F. This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock which causes the perlite to pop in a manner similar to that of popcorn. When expanded, each granular, snow-white particle of perlite is sterile with a neutral pH and contains many tiny, closed cells or bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which provide an extremely large surface area. These surfaces hold moisture and nutrients and make them available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical shape of each particle, air passages are formed which provide optimum aeration and drainage. Because perlite is sterile, it is free of disease, seeds, and insects. Perlite has been used for many years throughout the world for soil conditioning and as a component of growing mixes with materials such as peat moss or bark. Extensive studies have shown that the unique capillary action of perlite makes it a superior growing media for hydroponic cultures. Among the many uses of perlite today are propagation and seed cultivation, plug production and transplants, interiorscape and planter growing, composting, hydroponic cultures, turf and lawns, and around shrubs, trees, and landscaping. Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock. When heated at very high temperatures, Perlite expands to 15 times its original volume much like popcorn. The extremely lightweight particles are composed of microscopic spheres that have a porous and broken surface that promotes healthy root and plant growth. It provides excellent aeration and drainage of the root system while providing a significant holding capacity for both water and soluble nutrients. Perlite is natural, sterile, ultra-lightweight, non-toxic, and virtually pH neutral. It is used for the propagation of seedlings and cuttings, as a soil conditioner, as a hydroponic growing medium, on roof deck gardens, nursery stocks, hanging baskets and more. Unfortunately, due to the nature of this product, we are unable to ship this item to buyers outside the borders of South Africa. On offer is a 5 Litre Bag Click Here For Other Pack Sizes

Horticultural Vermiculite has the excellent property of improving soil aeration while retaining the moisture and nutrients necessary to feed roots, cuttings, and seeds for faster growth. Vermiculite is permanent, clean, odourless, nontoxic and sterile. It will not deteriorate, turn mouldy or rot.The pH of vermiculite is essentially neutral (7.0-9.5) but owing to the presence of associated carbonate compounds, reactions are normally in the alkaline direction. Vermiculite possesses cation exchange properties, thus it can hold and make available to the growing plant ammonium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. When mixed with peat, composted bark, organic compost, or natural soils, vermiculite like perlite helps promote faster root growth, and gives quick anchorage to young roots. These mixes help retain air, plant food, and moisture, and releases them as needed by the plant. Because vermiculite is very light and easy to handle, it easily mixes with soil, peat, composted pine bark and other composted organic materials and fertilizers. ** Available to South African customers only  ** Regular garden variety potting soil is not suitable for carnivorous plants as the mineral and salt content will burn the roots and kill off your plant quite quickly.  The nutrient poor soils to which terrestrial carnivorous plants have adapted to, are often rich in peat and sand. This growing media can be duplicated with a soil mixture of sphagnum peat moss, horticultural sand and/or perlite Ideal for repotting, this is our own nutrient-free premix that we use for our venus flytrap growing purposes This tailored premix is very low in nutrients and made up of imported Canadian peat moss and horticultural perlite. The ratio of ingredients in the mix has been designed to trap and hold moisture while providing sufficient drainage - creating a stable friable mix for your precious plant.  The mix has been washed, but it's always recommended to rinse the media prior to use Available in 500ml packets * 1 packet will fill a standard 10cm pot or 50 cell plug tray, plus a little extra * Happy Growing!!

The Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) is the most well-known species of carnivorous plants. These insectivorous plants lure their prey using sweet-smelling nectar. When an insect lands on the head of the fly trap, they seek the source of the nectar, and if the plant is lucky, it will touch one of the many trigger hairs located within the jaws of the trap. Once triggered, the trap snaps closed, trapping the victim. The plant then secretes an enzyme which essentially 'dissolves' the insect, turning it into a digestible dinner. After a few days, the fly trap will re-open, to await its next victim. Venus Fly Traps are quite easy to grow, as long as they are given the proper conditions.            The Venus flytrap has a rosette of leaves up to 20 cm across. Each leaf has a flat stalk and ends in a trap. The centre is often reddish, and the sides of the trap are lined with stiff, comb-like bristles that interlock when the trap closes. The flowers are white, in a cluster at the top of a cm leafless stalk. They should be grown in very bright light, but not in direct, hot sun. A warm, humid environment, with a constant supply of moisture, such as you would find in a terrarium is ideal. The potting mixture should consist of a mix of 70% Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss and 30% Horticultural Perlite. The Venus flytrap also known as Venus's flytrap or Venus' flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States. Dionaea is a monotypic genus closely related to the waterwheel plant and sundews, all of which belong to the family Droseraceae.  The Venus flytrap is commonly grown as a curiosity plant and is a source of wonder for children and adults alike. Indeed, it is likely that the Venus flytrap has been the source of inspiration for many a horror film involving man-eating plants – a somewhat unique “use” within the plant kingdom! Dionaea muscipula has also been shown to contain naphthoquinones that may have medicinal value. These Dionaea muscipula seeds are the product of careful hand pollination of numerous superior Venus Flytrap clones. The seed and pollen parents of these seeds include Big Mouth, Red Dragon, Red Piranha, B52, Royal Red, Czech Giant, Southwest Giant, FTS Maroon Monster, Low Giant, Jaws, Big Vigorous, Fused Tooth, Sawtooth and Holland Red. This pack consists of Mixed Giant Dionaea muscipula Forms

Drosera commonly known as the sundews comprises one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 171 species around the world. The genus includes annuals and perennials, large and small plants, and denizens of tropical, temperate, and polar habitats. Some of the showiest species are from the botanically rich Cape Province of South Africa. They should not be confused with the ever popular Venus Fly Trap, Dionaea muscipula. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which they grow. Both the botanical name and the English common name refer to the glistening drops of mucilage at the tip of each tentacle that resemble drops of morning dew. Drosera has also been recorded for its medicinal use against warts, corns and sunburn.            Ethnobotanically a tea made from the plant was also used as a tranquilizer and aphrodisiac. Whether indigenous or exotic, Sundews deserve a little corner in all carnivorous plant collections. They make fascinating indoor houseplants. These curiosity plants grow best in pots filled with a mix of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Vermiculite and Horticultural Perlite. They can also be grown in our general Carnivorous Growing Medium. Drosera capensis commonly known as the Cape Sundew is a South African endemic species found exclusively in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It is the most common sundew in cultivation, since it is so easy to grow. Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 15cm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. From December to January the , simple, pink-mauve flowers are borne on a single stem and mature in ascending order.
