Product Description Kessen II (U) (PS2) Review The bigger brother of PlayStation 2 launch title Kessen, Kessen II (U) is a very tactical title which requires great patience and bags of time to play, but rewards the player who sticks with it with gameplay by the sackload. It's a Japanese-developed game set in China and in typical Japanese style the story revolves around the feudal period of the country's history, telling a story of honour and betrayal on a grand scale. Think of it as a console war game involving ordering huge units of troops around a battlefield and you won't be far wrong. As a gaming experience Kessen II (U) can be rewarding and at the same time oddly frustrating, given the relatively poor quality of graphics during planning phases and the ponderous and overly intrusive cutscenes. The fighting sequences are all very impressive, though, with up to 500 troops on screen at any one time and the inclusion of magic users who can throw hellfire, damnation and some very impressive large boulders around with relative abandon. For a game of such complexity the learning curve is nicely balanced and never feels as if it's going to get too difficult too quickly, but what may really hold the game back is its core subject--a tactics game set in feudal Japan will appeal to a very limited market. That said, if you fancy a break from Metal Gear 's military tip-toeing and Grand Theft Auto 's blatant "shoot first and never mind the questions" attitude there's a lot to be said for Kessen II (U).-- Chris Russell

Your heroes gain experience, skills and spells, and you put them in command of the largest armies that you can afford in an ultimate effort to defeat the enemy mercenaries looking to conquer you first. Half the game is spent exploring and building, and the other half is spent in battle. The overhead map switches to a side view when you engage in combat, at which point you must command your various creatures against their enemies, taking turns moving unit stacks one by one depending on their speed. You can have up to seven types of creatures serving under a hero, with seven unique creatures available in each of the eight castles. The single-player game spans six campaigns detailing the war to claim the Kingdom of Erathia from the perspective of good, evil and mercenary leaders alike. The games even more bloody and violent than before as you take on every mythological monster in the book. The lowdown: Given the quick turnaround from the first game this isnt an enormous departure from the original, but thats no bad thing with a series as accomplished as this. Kratos has a new range of moves, combos and magic to unleash but the biggest changes are in the variety of monsters he has to face. The bigger ones can only be beaten with special button presses, which result in some spectacular finishing moves such as the Cylops whose eye Kratos plucks out of its socket or the cannon fodder zombies he slices in two. One of the best sequences though has Kratos leaping off the back of a Pegasus and onto a Gryphon, whose wings he promptly pulls off before falling to the world below. Most exciting moment: Just like the original this game recreates many of the best moments from ancient Greek mythology and movies. One particularly cool sequence involves trying to get a golden fleece that can reflect back the stony gaze of a gorgon. Since you ask: Many fans were surprised that this sequel wasnt on the PS3 but a next generation version is being planned. Original creator David Jaffe isnt working on either sequel at the moment though, but on an as yet unrevealed PSP project. The bottom line: Kratos sticks to what he knows best: the PS2 and ultra violence. HARRISON DENT
