In 'Saints and Soldiers' (2003), set in Belgium in December 1944, German troops open fire on unarmed American prisoners of war, provoking the historic Malmedy Massacre. Four soldiers, trapped behind enemy lines, discover a stranded R.A.F. pilot who holds the key to German intelligence which could save thousands of American lives. The five men must battle through the bitter winter landscape to smuggle their precious cargo from the clutches of the enemy. 'Days of Glory' (2007), directed by Rachid Bouchareb, depicts the plight of the North African troops enlisted to fight in the French army between 1943 and 1945. Despite the fact that the four young Arabs around whom the story centres have, in effect, been called up by one colonial oppressor to fight another, they say goodbye to their families in Algeria, Morocco and Senegal and willingly step forward to take up their arms. But all find themselves shockingly discriminated against by bigots within the French army, and deprived of the few rights and privileges to which new recruits are entitled. Bouchareb's powerful and persuasive film was instrumental in French prime minister Jacques Chirac's decision to compensate all North Africans who fought in World War II by unfreezing their pensions. A semi-autobiographical project by John Boorman about a nine year old boy called Bill as he grows up in London during the blitz of World War 2. For a young boy, this time in history was more of an adventure, a total upheaval of order, restrictions and discipline. The liberating effect of the war on the women left behind. And the joy when Hitler blows up your school.

Victor My Journey - Victor Matfield with De Jongh Borchardt. As the most capped Springbok rugby player ever, Victor Matfield is a national hero who transcends rugby provincialism and has fans across the world. His rugby exploits and achievements are numerous: he was an instrumental part of the team that won the 2007 Rugby World Cup, he helped win two Tri Nations tournaments for the Boks, he has lifted the Super 14 trophy three times with the Bulls and he has enjoyed Currie Cup glory. In his much-anticipated autobiography, he opens up about his life, from growing up as a shy boy in Pietersburg to moving to Pretoria, where he had to learn the hard way about dealing with the pleasures of life as a talented young rugby player. He talks frankly about his issues with coaches, including his mentor Heyneke Meyer and Jake White, who once tried to physically attack him. Victor also deals with Kamp Staaldraad and other controversies; the challenges rugby poses to his personal life and the sacrifices inherent in the life of a professional sportsman. In this Rugby World Cup year, this is undoubtedly the one book every rugby fan will want to read. Current and up to date: covers Victor s career from when he was an under-eight barefoot player to the conclusion of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It is an absorbing, behind-the-scenes account of a world very few people are privy to, and reveals the hard lessons he learnt in business, and how people even friends have exploited his fame to make a quick buck." • Secondhand book. • Softcover. • English. • 337 Pages. • 23 Cm. • Name and surname in book. • 725 - show phone -. • REF: 338.
