Most morning glory flowers perk up and harden during the early morning and are often fully erect, thus their name. The flowers usually start to fade a couple of hours before the "petals" start showing visible curling. They prefer full exposure throughout the day and mesic soils. Some morning glories, such as Ipomoea muricata, are night blooming flowers. Plant produces stunning Crimson Red 4 to 5 inch flowers with a pure white throat. The Scarlett O'Hara is a prolific climber spreading quickly. Stictocardia is a genus of herbaceous or woody climbers in the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae. The genus name Stictocardia means ‘dotted heart’ in reference to the dark glands at the lower leaf surface of the heart shaped leaves.  Stictocardia macalusoi commonly known as Scarlet African Morning Glory is a very rare indigenous perennial robust climber with dark purple to blue vines covered in large heart-shaped leaves.         It bears very showy large red trumpet shaped flowers with yellow centres all year round. This plant is well suited to pot culture as well as being used under trees where they are allowed to scramble up lower branches. Stictocardia macalusoi will easily cover any trellis, fence or lattice support in one season. Stictocardia macalusoi will bloom more profusely than its cousin Stictocardia beraviensis and is much more dramatic in its colour intensity and form. Stictocardia seeds need to be scarified before soaking overnight and sowing the next morning. Barely nick the hard outer seed coat with a file, sandpaper or nail clippers. Be very careful not to nick too deep so as to damage the embryo, the white part inside the seed. Seed germinates easily in a damp mixture of fine humus-rich soil with some sand. A glass sheet on top helps keep the soil moist but do allow some air to circulate. Newspaper on top of the glass will help germination by keeping the seeds dark. Use light soil rich in humus but with good drainage and add some super phosphate. Water the plant well at first and then moderately all year but especially in summer. Add compost at planting time and again 2 or 3 times per summer, as mulch. Give an occasional dressing of fertilizer for flowering plants (with ratio of N:P:K = 3:1:5) or a general fertilizer (ratio of 2:3:2).

Passiflora quadrangularis  Seeds Passiflora quadrangularis, also named Passiflora macrocarpa or Giant Granadilla, is a perennial vine, looking much like Passiflora alata, but its flowers are bigger. Native to Central and South America it is grown for its large ornamental fragrant flowers and the large fruits. It climbs by means of clinging tendrils and can be kept as a container plant. The long tendrils need lots of support for climbing. It is a fast growing vine which can grow over 15 meters high. It may be grown as a houseplant in a sunny window. A vigorous tropical vine with large bright green oval leaves, 7-13 cm long, 6-10 cm wide. The stems are quadrangular in shape. One of the loveliest and most exotic of the Passion flowers producing gorgeous purple, white and blue banded fragrant flowers, measuring 8-10 cm across in a long succession from mid-Summer to Autumn. It produces giant green to yellow Passion fruits reaching over one foot in diameter. The pulp is white or greyish and is not as flavourful as the common Passion fruit, but still tasty and often eaten or used in drinks. It rarely produces fruit under greenhouse conditions but makes up for this by the sheer glory of its flowers. Pruning is a must to keep the vine healthy. Prune off less vigorous growth and occasionally prune back vigorous growth to promote flowering. When established, and without care, the passion fruit can easily overtake other garden plants, shading them from sun. Protect from frost or plant in frost free areas. The Giant Granadilla is hardy to 35°F when mature, frost tender when young. Provide ideally a temperature of 15°- 28°C. Keep the atmosphere humid through the summer and place in full sun, can tolerate partial shade. Passiflora quadrangularis loves the warm humid Tropics. You may need to water your plants on a daily basis during the hottest summer months. During the winter the roots should be kept moist, but as growth will be much slower you will probably only need to water once a week, depending on growing temperature. It will do best in a loam based mix with a little peat moss. If their pot is too large or if they have an unrestricted root run then the whole plant will simply get bigger and bigger but it will refuse to flower and therefore produce the fruits. By limiting the pot size you are limiting the ability to grow and this is seen as a threat, so the natural mechanism is to produce seed for the next generation. A suitably sized pot for an adult plant would generally be of 30cm in diameter. On offer is a pack of 5 Seeds

BRACHYCOME iberidifolia, or Swan River Daisy A care-free perennial that forms clouds of soft colour. The dainty, star-like blooms sit on top of mounds of feathery foliage. Often grown as an annual. Dozens of beautiful, dainty, 2.5cm flowers appear all at one time, most often in light hues, each with a yellow centre rimmed in white. It is one of the most profuse and long-flowering plants, each often producing well over 100 blue to purple flowers. Flowers bloom until late autumn; it flowers so heavily that the foliage is often obscured. The cheerful little pinwheels form at the ends of the stalks and are held above pale green, feathery foliage. The plant is a pretty companion for verbena and coreopsis. The feathery foliage forms an interesting contrast when used with broad leaf plants such as morning glory. Its tidy, mounding growth habit is welcome toward the front of the border or as an edging. Brachycome is a good choice for filling in around tall, leggy plants and carpeting bare spots. In a container or window box, brachycome sends its short, sprawling stems cascading over the rim and showering flowers over the sides. They are especially effective as mass plantings, draping over retaining walls, in pots, hanging baskets and as borders. With minimal care this species is a prolific flowerer and is a beautiful addition to any garden.   View our other items by clicking on the shield:

Shining Birch Bark Cherry is, as the common names suggest, most noted for its outstanding glossy reddish-brown bark. Old bark peels somewhat like a birch to reveal a polished sheen that is typically described as being reddish brown, copper brown or mahogany brown. Native to Western China and Tibet, this is a rounded deciduous tree that typically grows to 20 to 30 feet tall. Narrow, lance-shaped, willow like, dark green leaves to 4 inches long are serrated (serrula meaning with saw-like teeth). Small white flowers 3/4 inch across bloom singly or in 2 to 4 flowered umbels in March-April as the foliage emerges. Flowers are followed by cherry like red fruit (1/2 inch diameter drupes), which are not recommended for eating. The leaves turn a clean yellow in autumn and fall away to reveal the tree's skin in all its glory. In the right light, it really does seem to be sculpted from polished copper or bronze but with a richer tone than either. Shining Birch Bark Cherry is not a very big tree and is an excellent choice for a small garden where space and light are limited. The sheer beauty of the bark deserves to be the centre of attention.   Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA
