Scorched Earth: 100 Years Of Southern African Potteries Scorched Earth is the first comprehensive history of fine art pottery in southern Africa, with a focus on pioneer ceramic studios and workshops. This encyclopedic revisionist history of an often overlooked sector of the South African art and design world explores the work of 30 potteries that produced high-quality ceramic wares from 1900 to 1980. The book is the definitive history of southern African ceramics, giving voice to many artists whose work is little known in the wider art world. It contains over 300 photographs, a comprehensive list of studios, workshops and potters, makers marks, and a wide-ranging essay on the history of this art form in southern Africa.   About the author Wendy Gers is a former curator at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and now lectures at lEcole Suprieure dArt et de Design de Valenciennes, France. Gers curated the prestigious Taiwan Ceramics Biennale 2014. She is a research associate at the University of Johannesburg and an associate advisor at The Design Cradle, Cape Town. It also details 58 aloe and related species across several vegetation zones. Aloe cultivation and propagation is discussed too, providing insight into optimum growing conditions, gardening styles and plants that flourish in different regions. A feature on medicinal, cosmetic and culinary uses reveals the special properties of these intriguing plants. DAVID ANDERSON "ON SAFARI" THE SOURCE FOR SAFARIS IN EAST AND SOUTHERN AFRICA David Anderson is an expert on safari design and planning with over 30 years of experience, renowned for his knowledge of safari destinations. He  became captivated by Africa after a five-week trip to Kenya in 1978 and two years later, planned and organized his first safari for a small group of friends. That success led him to organize other safaris, which eventually resulted in the creation of David Anderson Safari. Over the years, he has designed hundreds of safaris and personally escorted over fifty. Concerned with declining tourism to Africa and the inevitable impact that this was having on endangered wildlife, Anderson organized the 'Focus on Africa' Project in 1993. Over a sixteen-week period, one hundred thirty-six mostly amateur photographers traveled throughout East and Southern Africa on twenty-five safaris, which he designed. In all, more than 250,000 photo frames were exposed.  The award winning book,  On Safari: The Source for Safaris in East and Southern Africa  was inspired because David saw the need for an attractive coffee-table book that provided more than just wonderful pictures and  should be a resource book with solid information for the safari traveler. Anderson lives in Santa Barbara, California, but travels frequently to Africa in search of knowledge, adventure, and of course, to practice the art and science of photography. Together with Nelson Mandela Square, the centre, with some 144,000 m2 of shopping space, is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere (behind Chadstone Shopping Centre). Much of Johannesburg's business tourism is centred on Sandton, which has a string of 5-star hotels. It was recently announced by Liberty Properties that Sandton City will receive a R1,77-billion upgrade. Liberty Properties chief executive Samuel Ogbu has envisaged the complex as South Africa's very own Wall Street "Africa is not for sissies, but we have a bold vision, which is to see the Sandton City precinct as our own Wall Street." The redevelopment will include the construction of a 60-storey office tower, a new hotel, new retail and office space and residential apartments. The 60-storey office tower will be the tallest building in Africa, replacing the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg CBD. The extension will stretch to 30 000 m2 and the total complex will have a gross lettable area of 158 000 m2. London-based RTKL Associates have been chosen to design the complex. Nelson Mandela Square, formerly known as Sandton Square, was renamed in March 2004, after the unveiling of a 6-metre bronze statue of the former South African president. Perhaps ironically, Liliesleaf Farm, where Nelson Mandela lived in the early 1960s and where many leading political activists were arrested in 1963 and tried as part of the now infamous Rivonia Trial, is just north of Nelson Mandela Square, close to the N1 Highway, off Rivonia Road.
