Our books are protected with a removable plastic cover and sent with care. Condition: Good. There's nothing quite like it anywhere in the world. It's a visual tour de force - complete with high drama, raw tragedy, sound effects and stunning costumes. Scripted by Nature and choreographed by the weather, hunger and sheer chance, it's the spectacular world of southern African wildlife. The variety of the landscape, the extremes of climate, and the huge diversity of vegetation create ideal conditions for a fraternity of wild animals unequalled anywhere else on Earth. More than 900 species of birds cohabit freely with 338 mammal species, a diverse population of reptiles and amphibians, and an inestimable number of insects. In South Africa alone, nearly six million hectares of land are devoted to conservation. There is a growing awareness of the importance of wildlife heritage, and the necessity for its continued survival, in spite of industrial development and the encroachment of man. Fuelling this awareness is the commitment of a group of dedicated photographers who spend days, months and years in the wild pursuing a dream: to capture on film the extraordinary lives of animals in a way that's never been done before. South Africa
Southern Africa is a fantastic melting pot of human beings. This is its great fascination. Living here today are people whose culture is still in the late stone age, others who live in the iron age, and yet others belonging to the age of the atom. These are people from the east, from the west, from the north, people like the Bushmen who were here so far back that they always seem part of the sundrenched landscape. In the varied scenic setting of Southern Africa, all these people in widely different ways confronted nature, come to metaphysical terms with the wonders of the land around them, devised their own explanations, myths, legends and romances about the mystery of nature, their own beginnings, the parallel community of ghosts, demons, fairies, monsters and other creatures, good and bad, of the dream world. "Living in the wilderness they [Ken and Lynne Tinley] discovered a wealth of wonders. Sketching this far-off world of risk and hardship in words and pictures Lynne conveys images of great beauty, controversial biology, anthropology and veld humour. Moreover she provides a vivid and entertaining account of how to raise a boy and girl in the bush. Together the family survives terrorist raids, charging hippo, elephant and lion, rabid dog bites, baboon spiders, alcoholic snails, dangling camel membranes, and the Fat Mouse. They eat elephant trunk Portuguese-style and termites cooked by bushmen."

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours This book celebrates the rich, varied and untold history of investigative journalism in southern Africa and the crucial role it has played in shaping the region over the last 300 years. It tells of the escapades of those who exposed atrocities of the British colonial rulers, the seizure of land from black owners, apartheid death squads, prison conditions, farm labour, government and corporate corruption, environmental travesty and health issues. Young journalists who have previously studied the likes of the Watergate scandal will have access to African journalists who faced huge risks to expose the abuse of power, ranging from the undercover exploits of the legendary ‘Mr Drum', through to the recent #Guptaleaks expos, of which it was said, ‘Seldom have journalists played such a crucial role in bringing a country back from the brink.' The book highlights the long record of accountability journalism in countries such as South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, and the recent surge of such work in others such as Botswana and Malawi. It breaks new ground in stretching the history of this type of journalism decades further back than previously recorded, including largely ignored work such as John Dube's coverage of the Zulu Bambatha Rebellion and Richard Msimang's documentation of the impact of land confiscation in the early 20th century. The book includes an introduction by Anton Harber, editor and professor, and each case study is written up by an expert in the area. Features Summary This book celebrates the rich, varied and untold history of investigative journalism in southern Africa and the crucial role it has played in shaping the region over the last 150 years.  Stunning book.!! Book in VG Condition. Glossy pages.. Heavy book in Slip case,. Slip case slightly damaged at one corner. All else in VG condition. A Treasure of knowledge.   "The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals" covers each of Southern Africa's 343 mammal species. From the diminutive shrews to the weird and wonderful bats, the carnivores, primates and ungulates (hoofed animals), this guide represents the work of 72 leading authorities in the field of mammal research. More than 400 colour photographs, many submitted by the region's most renowned wildlife photographers, were selected from an initial shortlist of 1,000. Wherever possible these portray the animals in their natural environments and many depict interesting aspects of behaviour too. The guide is divided into three main sections. The first and most extensive section covers land mammals - from shrews, moles and bats to primates, rabbits, rodents, primates, carnivores and ungulates. The second section embraces the marine mammals, comprising the whales, dolphins and seals. The third part of the guide covers exotic (introduced) species, such as the house rat, the grey squirrel and the fallow deer. In most instances, the species are introduced in a general text that is followed by more detailed biological notes covering aspects such as habitat, breeding, food and feeding methods and social system. A distribution map is provided for each animal. Supplementary essays at the front of the guide offer an even deeper insight into the subject, covering evolution, mammal classification, habitats, mammal adaptations and conservation. Selected further reading, a glossary of terms and a list of alternative names for each of the major languages within the sub-region are also provided.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Today is Monday. The calls do not come as before. Weeks elapse between them, and when I answer the phone there is no overlap of voices, only my mother's. She spends much of the conversation avoiding mention of the pink elephant trumpeting in the middle of the room. The pink elephant would be my defection to Georgia. When I telephoned with the news of my imminent relocation my father asked, "Georgia, as in the Republic of Georgia by the Black Sea, or Georgia as in the Peach State?" He hoped I meant the former because that Georgia promised unique opportunities to advance the democratic cause of justice. What could Georgia, former land of the Confederacy, offer? Convicting arsonists and thieves in Macon, Georgia, was never Harvard Law grad Natalie Goldberg's dream. The pay is abysmal, the work is exhausting, and the humidity is hell for a woman with curly hair. But when a steamy romance with her high-powered New York boss went bad, Natalie jumped at the first job offered, packed her bags, and headed south. Natalie's leftist Yankee background brands her a conspicuous outsider in this insular community. Her father, a famous civil rights lawyer, refuses to accept her career change--or talk to her. Her best friend begs her to come back home, and Natalie keeps thinking she sees her former lover everywhere. But Natalie's not completely alone. There are a garden-obsessed neighbor, a former beauty queen-turned-defense attorney, and a handsome colleague who has a nervous tic whenever she gets near. And then there's a capital case that has her eating antacids by the truckload. Yep, it's going to be one heckuva long, hot summer.... Features Summary Today is Monday.
