Excellent account researched and written by Nigel Steel and Peter Hart. The battle for Gallipoli was officially described as 'one of the world's classic tragedies' and in Defeat at Gallipoli the participants tell the full story of this failed offensive. The bitter campaign against the Turks from April 1915 to January 1916 was ill-conceived, inadequately equipped and never likely to succeed. The bravery and resilience of the troops in the face of disease and violent death is shown in their letters, diaries and recorded memories, recalling the sordid reality of the campaign. Linking together these experiences, Nigel Steel and Peter Hart provide a new insight into the lives of the soldiers involved and a powerful, moving account of a doomed campaign.Softcover published 1994. 480 pages with index. Illustrated. Excellent condition. Tracked postage is R50.00.

Britain Army, Great War, WWI, Soldier, Honor, Duty, Militarty, Medal, Souvenir Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country: Metal Purity: Gold Plated, Gilded Box: Year of Issue: Weight: 1 oz CoA: Face Value: Dimensions: 40 Quality: Mintage: New token with capsule The round souvenir token plated with real gold released in memory of Great Britainメs involvement in World War I. The design of the coin refers to the tragedy of the first global military conflict. The Great War, as it was called before the war with Nazi Germany, put an end to the existence of four empires: Ottoman, German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian. The political map and social life of Europe were changed forever. Being a member of the Triple Entente, United Kingdom suffered significant losses in World War I, despite the fact the theatres of war werenメt situated on its territory. One side of the coin depicts military hardware and soldiers of the early XX century, the background is colored British flag. The Great War words are minted above the image, and the dates 1914-1918 are placed below. The inscriptions are separated with stars pattern going along the rim.The other side of the token designed to honor victims of WWI. One can see dark silhouettes of a soldier and a tomb cross. The grave is covered with red poppy flowers which symbolize the wartime remembrance in English-speaking countries. There are names of the bloodiest battles of the Great War minted on this side such as Verdun, Somme, Gallipoli, Ypres and others. ____________________________________________________ Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

The Russo–Japanese War (1904–05) was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea. The Battle/Blockade/Siege of Port Arthur was the major engagement of the War. Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett was an English war correspondent during the First World War. Through his reporting of the Battle of Gallipoli he was instrumental in the birth of the Anzac legend which still dominates military history in Australia and New Zealand. Twelve years previously Ashmead-Bartlett arrived in Manchuria to report the Russo-Japanese War. " As we have probably witnessed old-fashioned assaults and close-order formations for the last time, it has been one of my chief objects to place on record the obsolete method of fighting which characterised the Siege." (from the preface)
