It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The basic premise of "Social Statistics for a Diverse Society, Sixth Edition", is that substance and statistical techniques are truly related in social science research. Therefore, the authors have tried to integrate clear explanations of statistical techniques with issues of particular relevance to society. The substantive focus of this book recognizes that students live in a world characterized by a growing diversity and richness of social differences. Using straightforward prose and emphasizing intuition and common sense, this book teaches basic statistics while incorporating real research examples related to the dynamic interplay of race, class, gender and other social variables within our society and our global neighbors. The text includes resources designed to support effective teaching: illustrations showing how statistical concepts are used to interpret social issues, guides for reading and interpreting the research literature, SPSS demonstrations, and a rich variety of exercises. This title provides a close link between the practice of statistics, important social issues, and real-world examples. This shows students that in the social sciences there is a constant interplay between social concerns and the methods of inquiry and investigation. It provides a informal writing style - coupled with the use of real-world example, the conversational writing style results in a book that is more accessible and engaging for students. A focus on race, class, gender and other aspects of social diversity is threaded throughout the book, and sets the book apart from others in the field and mirrors the major emphasis in the social sciences today. Reading the Research Literature sections in most chapters help students read and interpret statistical information in professional and scholarly publications. Integration and Review Chapters on the accompanying CD-ROM bundled with the text review the two halves of the book for descriptive and inferential statistics. Boxes and Learning Checks in chapters - Throughout the book are boxes containing information on statistics in practice and insightful tips on using various techniques. The Learning Checks allow students to test their understanding of concepts just presented. Emphasis on Computing SPSS for Windows is used throughout the book in conjunction with General Social Survey data to introduce students to one of the most commonly used analytical software packages in the field. At the end of each chapter is a demonstration of a related SPSS procedure, along with a set of exercises. Features Summary Emphasizes intuition and common sense, while demonstrating the link between the practice of statistics and important social issues. Lynn Hankinson Nelson presents an accessible and balanced discussion of research questions, background assumptions, methods, and hypotheses about biology and gender with which feminist scientists and science scholars critically and constructively engage. Writing from the perspective of contemporary philosophy of science, she examines the evidence for and ethical implications of biological hypotheses about gender, and discusses relevant philosophical issues including understandings of scientific objectivity, the nature of scientific reasoning, and relationships between biological research and the scientific and social contexts in which it is pursued. Clear and comprehensive, this volume addresses the engagements of feminist scientists and science scholars with a range of disciplines, including developmental and evolutionary biology, medicine, neurobiology, and primatology. Features Summary A balanced and accessible introduction to the engagements that feminist scientists and science scholars undertake with a variety of biological sciences. The Drama of Being a Child: The Search for the True Self By Alice Miller The first publication of Drama of Being a Child and of this 1997 edition are separated by fifteen years of experience - the author's experience with her own self-therapy and with other recent therapy methods, and finally her knowledge of the life histories of the several thousand readers who have written to her. The research into childhood she has undertaken in this period has led to further fine-tuning of her earlier findings, as is ocumented and illustrated here with an abundance of examples. The author examines the consequences of repression at personal and social levels, the causes of the physical and psychological harm done to children and how this can be prevented, and finally the new methods at our disposal for dealing with the consequences of infant traumas.

Stunning book.!! Book in VG Condition. Glossy pages.. Heavy book in Slip case,. Slip case slightly damaged at one corner. All else in VG condition. A Treasure of knowledge.   "The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals" covers each of Southern Africa's 343 mammal species. From the diminutive shrews to the weird and wonderful bats, the carnivores, primates and ungulates (hoofed animals), this guide represents the work of 72 leading authorities in the field of mammal research. More than 400 colour photographs, many submitted by the region's most renowned wildlife photographers, were selected from an initial shortlist of 1,000. Wherever possible these portray the animals in their natural environments and many depict interesting aspects of behaviour too. The guide is divided into three main sections. The first and most extensive section covers land mammals - from shrews, moles and bats to primates, rabbits, rodents, primates, carnivores and ungulates. The second section embraces the marine mammals, comprising the whales, dolphins and seals. The third part of the guide covers exotic (introduced) species, such as the house rat, the grey squirrel and the fallow deer. In most instances, the species are introduced in a general text that is followed by more detailed biological notes covering aspects such as habitat, breeding, food and feeding methods and social system. A distribution map is provided for each animal. Supplementary essays at the front of the guide offer an even deeper insight into the subject, covering evolution, mammal classification, habitats, mammal adaptations and conservation. Selected further reading, a glossary of terms and a list of alternative names for each of the major languages within the sub-region are also provided.
