A white-hand gibbon named Koko who came from Thailand became so enchanting a member of the author's household zoo in Frankfurt that it set him daydreaming of the strange, remote world of it's origin until the longing to visit the tropical wonders of south-east Asia became irresistible.  So he sailed for Rangoon, where he promised the zoo a black panther from Siam.  He fell in love with Thailand, tranquil, gracious, a country with time for talk and the telling of splendid stories. Hard cover, fair condition.  The dust jacket shows signs of wear.  The book is clean. Paper browning.  214 pages.

So much is tied up in a countryÆs cuisine... indigenous foods of roots and tubers, native wild herbs, berries and spices, cultural traditions and methods of cooking, foreign influences, ingredients and flavourings both indigenous and introduced. One could almost say that a countryÆs dishes embody the essence of what that country is all about. And this is what World Atlas of Food presents to you: from every continent on the globe (excluding Antarctica, naturally) the essence of traditions, food styles and flavours for 100 countries - all those elements that serve to make each country unique - has been extracted. In many cases neighbouring nations or a cluster of islands, as in the Pacific, share a multitude of dishes and yet, inevitable, a specific ingredient or a culinary twist lends each island its own individuality. World Atlas of Food is a journey of the senses, offering armchair travel into the kitchen of six continents. At the same time, through the recipes of our giggling gourmet, Jenny Morris, which uniquely captures the aromas and flavours of each specific country, you are invited to experience the real taste sensations. The most representative local dishes and drinks are also listed, providing insight into ingredients, flavours, herbs and spices, and giving you an intimate understanding of food and its significance in 100 nations. You learn about specific national and traditional dishes, mealtime and social customs, how food styles have been influenced by other cultures and the symbolic role foods play in celebrations and festivals. A brief summary is provided of the salient facts and figures pertaining to each nation plus a short analysis on the way agriculture furnishes grains, vegetables and fruits to the people of the land. Liz Thorpe, second in command at New York's renowned Murray's Cheese, has used her notes and conversations from hundreds of tastings spanning nearly a decade to fashion this odyssey through the wonders of American cheese. Offering more than eighty profiles of the best, the most representative, and the most important cheesemakers, Thorpe chronicles American cheesemaking from the brave foodie hobbyists of twenty years ago (who put artisanal cheese on the map) to the carefully cultivated milkers and makers of today. Thorpe travels to the nation's cheese farms and factories, four-star kitchens and farmers' markets, bringing you along for the journey. In her quest to explore cheesemaking, she high-lights the country's greatest cheeses and concludes that today's cheesemakers can help provide more nourishing and sensible food for all Americans. Steve Jenkins, author of the celebrated "Cheese Primer," calls this "the best book about cheese you'll ever read." "The Cheese Chronicles" is a cultural history of an industry that has found breakout success and achieved equal footing with its European cousins. We've been told for so long that we are terrible cooks and yet when someone with a clipboard asks us what the best things are about being British, our traditional food and drink are more important than the monarchy and at least as significant as our landscape and national monuments in defining a collective notion of who we are. Taking nine archetypically British dishes - Pie and Peas, A Cheese Sandwich, Fish and Chips, Spag Bol, Devonshire Cream Tea, Curry, The Full English, The Sunday Roast and a Crumble with Custard - and enjoying them in their most typical settings, Pete Brown examines just how fundamental food is to our sense of identity, perhaps even our sense of pride, and the ways in which we understand our place in the world. 2014. Soft cover. 34 pages. Very good condition; like new.  Under 1kg. A thought-provoking Cape Town exhibition, Design & Making [the story of food], traces the evolution of craft and design through food - in particular, the vessels used for its preservation, storage, packaging and distribution. The exhibition, at the Castle of Good Hope from 12 May-12 October 2014, is a collaboration between the Cape Craft & Design Institute (CCDI) and Iziko Museums of South Africa’s Social History Collections Department. It is an official Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 project (#461). Installations reveal how the story of food preservation, storage and packaging over time is vast and complex. From using found objects such as ostrich eggs and gourds, and objects made from clay, wood, grass and other materials, we now store food in freezers, plastic, cardboard, glass and vacuum-packaging. And while we still have the same food types such as grains and cereals, in our current era there is a proliferation of ‘created’ foodstuffs such as energy drinks and same-size fruit and vegetables. The exhibition story is told through installations and objects: a large group of historic African, European and Asian objects sourced from Iziko’s Collections stands alongside 30 contemporary objects created by designer-makers from the Western Cape. There are also examples of modern packaging. The curators are independent consultants Rayda Becker and June Hosford, Esther Esmyol and Wieke van Delen (Iziko Museums), Vikki du Preez (Cape Peninsula University of Technology); it was project managed by Marjorie Naidoo (CCDI) and exhibition designer Aidan Bennetts.

Hardback. English. NK Publishing. 1999. In good condition. As we enter the new millennium we have the urge to return to a simpler lifestyle - family values, friendship, wholesome food and a strong bond with nature - characteristics of an earthy, rural existence. This title captures the new mood in country decorating with original and inspiring ideas. Traditionally, country style meant cosy, cluttered rooms with an abundance of frilled and piped soft furnishings, but the trend has shifted towards clean lines, simple styling and honest materials. The first part of this title explains the main characteristics of the new approach to country style - nature, simplicity and lifestyle. The second part features eight key contemporary country looks - rustic, naturals, romantic, monotone, modern rose, nautical, fresh floral and creative colour - and shows how to translate these into a distinctive look in the most important living areas of the home - the sittingroom, diningroom, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Practical ideas and tricks of the trade are shared throughout, showing you how to create a beautiful, peaceful environment on any budget. Previous owner's name inside.
