A white-hand gibbon named Koko who came from Thailand became so enchanting a member of the author's household zoo in Frankfurt that it set him daydreaming of the strange, remote world of it's origin until the longing to visit the tropical wonders of south-east Asia became irresistible.  So he sailed for Rangoon, where he promised the zoo a black panther from Siam.  He fell in love with Thailand, tranquil, gracious, a country with time for talk and the telling of splendid stories. Hard cover, fair condition.  The dust jacket shows signs of wear.  The book is clean. Paper browning.  214 pages.

2006. Hard cover with dust cover. 482 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. Buried Treasure: Travels Through the Jewel Box by Victoria Finlay is a third travelogue, a third social history and a third historical record of the semi-precious jewels we have come to know and cherish. The jewels included in this book are organized from softest to hardest on Mohs' scale. I say jewels and not stones, because the first three entries amber, jet and pearl, are not stones at all, they are made from other organic substances. The rest of the chapters are devoted to opal, peridot, emerald, sapphire, ruby and diamond. In each chapter, Finlay describes her travels to the ancient and modern sources of each jewel that take her to far flung places like Australia, Japan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Egypt, the Baltic Coast, England, and North America. Throughout her travels she encounters people who are directly involved in the production, marketing and distribution of these precious jewels. To me, it seems a bitter blow for the people in the production of jewels that they receive next to nothing for their labours whilst the middlemen and higher-ups become rich from their troubles, but Finlay injects labourer anecdotes with humour and soul that almost make one forget that some live in extreme poverty. The book includes an extensive bibliography and notes for each chapter. there are appendices in the back that include lists of birthstones, anniversary gemstones, Mohs' scale of relative hardness, alternative names, famous diamonds, names for cuts of gems, and glossary of gem words that are wonderfully informative.

Used book in good condition (2007) Alexandra Cooper has a tough case to prosecute. Brendan Quillan, a wealthy businessman from the Upper East Side, has been charged with hiring an assassin to kill his wife, but the evidence is flimsy and the defendant has one of the most successful defence lawyers on his side. Then an explosion kills Quillan's brother, one of the construction workers in a tunnel being built to secure Manhattan's water supply. The blast isn't a terrorist act, nor is it an accident, but it looks as though Duke Quillan was the target. And none of the team investigating the murder had come across any hint that Brendan had a brother, never mind one so far on the other side of the tracks. With another case to solve, Alex, together with Detectives Chapman and Mercer, discover that Quillan's upbringing is very different from what they'd first assumed, and in the cupboard of his estranged family there are many skeletons, not all of them metaphorical. In a cliff-hanging whodunnit, Linda Fairstein takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through New York and deep beneath its streets, to a conclusion which is as surprising as it is frightening.

Life has a way of not turning out the way we want. The disciple Peter knew what it was like to go through tough times. He endured threats, punishment, time in jail, beatings, and false words. He had seen enough to know how to stay strong in tough times. So he wrote a survival manual to show how we should act and respond when life isn't fair. His words of wisdom are beacons of hope for making it through hard times. Peter's counsel may surprise you. But it may be just what you need to sustain you when you find that you are between the rock and a hard place. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes an opening reflection, background information, an excerpt of the text (from the New International and New King James versions), exploration questions, inspirational thoughts from Max, and a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study. I was a Sixty-Eight Whiskeya combat medic. So when I hear someone shout MEDIC! training just kicks in. Its automatic, immediate. I dont think I even saw the guy whose leg I tended to, not really. All I saw was him. Zane Badd. His tuxedo fit him like hed been sewn into it, and his eyes reflected the fury and the hardness of a combat veteran, but when he looked at me, he justsoftened. By the time I had his brother patched, Zane and I were both covered in blood, and I knew I had to have him. The trouble with Zane isnt getting him, its keeping him. And the trouble with me is, even if I could hold onto a man like Zane, I wouldnt know what to do with him. Its not in my nature, and if life has taught me anything, its to not trust anyone, least of all men like Zane. Hes a warrior through and through, hard, muscular, gorgeous, tenacious, and yet oddly tender toward me. Experience and instincts are telling me to run from Zane Badd as fast as possible, but my heart and my body are telling me to stay, to hold on and not let go. Yeah, its a conflict as old as humanity itself, but its brand new for me. * * * Life as Navy SEAL doesnt exactly prepare you for normality. Yeah, I can tend bar and goof off with my seven crazy brothers, but what do I do when the woman of my dreamsdreams I didnt know Id had until I saw herexplodes into my life like a frag grenade? Im trained to attack, to win, to survive at any costs, and figuring out what to do about a woman like Amarantha Quinn will take every scrap of tenacity and courage I possess. Combat is easy, it turns out, in comparison to facing your own fears and scars. And then sometimes, just when you think youve got it finally figured out, fate throws you a screwball and sends everything FUBAR. Hardcover: Rose's book takes the reader through quarter of a century of service with the Regiment. From Maryhill Barracks, Glasgow in early 1930's to Palestine where Arabs and Jews were fighting among themselves and against the British. Then there was action in Somaliland in the early past of the war, India and with the Chindits in Burma. Those were the days when the regiments fought hard and played hard too: none more than the "Forty-twa". The author is a born raconteur. Whether in his letters home or his reminiscences of the events and personalities. He knew when to be serious. When his Jocks were being unfairly treated, he could be a dragon to the Staff and his surprises. Contained in this book are references to his family and particularly his brothers. There are glimpses of the grand old life before The War and more recent times. No reader can fail to be amused, saddened, impressed and above all charmed by this book.

Paperback. English. MacMillan. 2011 In good condition. Signed by Jansen. At a time when newspapers are full of the woes of the South African education system and stories of teachers who let the children in their classes down, this book shows that this is not the whole picture; it is a celebration of heroic teachers who have struggled against great odds to give their students a chance of success. Great South African Teachers celebrates the massive contribution of remarkable teachers, both past and present, working in South African schools. The stories, sent in by over 100 South Africans in response to advertisements placed in the Sunday Times, pay tribute to teachers who have changed lives through their passion for their subject, their dedication to the dignity of the teaching profession, and above all their determination to see the children in their classes succeed. The contributions reflect the full range of South African schools -- rich schools, poor schools, white schools under apartheid, black schools under apartheid, urban schools and rural schools, schools today and schools in the past. And the contributors come from varied backgrounds: privileged children exposed to the realities of apartheid South Africa through their teachers, poor children motivated to work to break the bonds of poverty, angry children and shy children, bright children stretched to achieve their full potential and others taught the value of hard work in the pursuit of success. Jonathan Jansen, assisted by Lihlumelo Toyana and Nangamso Koza, introduces the collection of contributions with a thought-provoking commentary on the lessons to be learnt from the tributes. Jansen identifies seven types of inspiring teacher, showing how each type works differently to bring out the best in the children in their charge. Great South African Teachers thanks our inspiring teachers and hopes to motivate the next generation of teachers to dedicate themselves to changing lives, to changing the future. All the royalties from this book go towards pre-service teacher bursaries at universities in South Africa. The first recipient of a bursary funded by the royalties from this book is currently studying for his Bachelor of Education degree at the University of the Free State. He will be the first graduate in his family.
