Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was not permitted to build or operate submarines. However, clandestine training onboard Finnish and Spanish submarines took place and U-boats were still built to German designs in Dutch yards. At the outset of the Second World War, Dönitz argued for a 300-strong U-boat fleet, since his force of 57 U-boats 'could only inflict pin-pricks against British seaborne trade'. In August 1939, U-48 left Germany, commanded by 'Vaddi' Schultze, to take up a waiting position around England. It scored its first success on 5 September, when it torpedoed the British freighter Royal Sceptre, then the Winkleigh on 8 September. On both occasions — the first of many — Schultze showed himself to be a notable humanitarian: he addressed signals to Churchill giving positions of the sinkings so that crews could be saved. By 1 August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World War, had sunk 56 merchant ships of 322,478 gross tons and one corvette. She was then transferred to the Baltic as a training boat. Schultze became commander of operation 3 U-Flotilla and later was appointed commander, II/Naval College Schleswig. He died in 1987 at the age of 78. U-48 was scuttled on 3 May 1945.

This is the story of military aviation in Rhodesia from the romantic days of 'bush' flying in the 1920's and '30s-when aircraft were refuelled from jerrycans and landing grounds were often the local golf course-to the disbandment of the Rhodesian Air Force (RhAF) on Zimbabwean independence in 1980. In 1939 the tiny Royal Rhodesian Air Force (RRAF) became the first to take up battle stations even before the outbreak of the Second World War. The three Rhodesian squadrons served with distinction in East Africa, the Western Desert, Italy and Western Europe. At home Rhodesia became a vast training ground for airmen from across the Empire-from Britain, the Commonwealth and even Greece. After the war, Rhodesia, on a negligible budget, rebuilt its air force, equipping it with Ansons, Spitfires, Vampires, Canberras, Hunters and Alouettes. Following UDI, the unilateral declaration of independence from Britain in 1965, international sanctions were imposed, resulting in many remarkable and groundbreaking innovations, particularly in the way of ordnance. The bitter 'bush war' followed in the late 1960s and '70s, with the RhAF in the vanguard of local counter-insurgency operations and audacious pre-emptive strikes against vast guerrilla bases in neighbouring Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana and as far afield as Angola and Tanzania. With its ageing fleet, including C-47 'Dakotas' that had been at Arnhem, the RhAF was able to wreak untold havoc on the enemy, Mugabe's ZANLA and Nkomo's ZIPRA. The late author took over 30 years in writing this book; the result is a comprehensive record that reflects the pride, professionalism and dedication of what were some of the world's finest airmen of their time. Paperback, 856 pages, 800 photos, 70 diagrams & maps SECOND EDITION: PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 2015

Paperback. English. Publisher: Penguin. 2014. In good condition.Antony Beevor's D-Day: The Battle for Normandy is the closest you will ever get to war - the taste, the smell, the noise and the fear. The Normandy Landings that took place on D-Day involved by far the largest invasion fleet ever known. The scale of the undertaking was simply awesome. What followed them was some of the most cunning and ferocious fighting of the war, at times as savage as anything seen on the Eastern Front. As casualties mounted, so too did the tensions between the principal commanders on both sides. Meanwhile, French civilians caught in the middle of these battlefields or under Allied bombing endured terrible suffering. Even the joys of Liberation had their darker side.

By Neil McCart 1999. Hard cover with dust cover, 208 pages. Very good condition; tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. This is the first, and only, book to tell the full stories of the last three Ark Royals in detail; the wartime Ark Royal which saw so much action in the first two years of the Second World War; the Ark Royal of the 1950s, 60s and 70s which, during the years of intense antagonism between the superpowers, projected British maritime air power all over the world; and the present Ark Royal which will take the Fleet Air Arm into the 21st century. The in - depth research has allowed the author to cover the careers of all three carriers, through each year of their operational service with the Royal Navy. There are 165 top quality photographs, including 15 in colour, covering their careers, from the launching of the third Ark Royal in 1937, right through to the present Ark Royals final deployment in the last decade of the 20th century.

1995. Large hard cover with dust cover. 200 pages. Very good condition; tightly bound, neat and clean. Book dealer's rubber stamp in front.  Over 1kg. POTGIETER, HERMAN; TEXT BY LINDEN BIRNS. MORE THAN A GAME: A SALUTE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE. "This book was published to coincide with the South African Air Forces' 75th anniversary. It traces the SAAF's development from the canvas-covered barnstormers of the 1920's to the computer-chip wonder-fighters of the 1990's. Through superb photography and an authoritative text, this book describes a trim, re-focussed SAAF in 1995. It also examines the post-Second World War expansion and subsequent shrinking of the SAAF's fleet, the establishment and closure of bases and the role of its squadrons. In addition, this book marks the high points in the parallel emergence of South Africa's defence aerospace industry and showcases the SAAF Museum's fine efforts in preserving large sections of the nation's under-rated aviation heritage. For the first time SAAF pilots publicly and frankly describe what it is like to fly various aircraft types. Their anecdotes augment many uncensored photographs, providing previously denied insights into what were recently regarded as top-secret and politically-sensitive pieces of military hardware.
