VINTAGE LIFE SAVING GUARDS BADGE The girl guard program has its roots in Scouting. While stationed in India, British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell realized his men lacked the ability to perform first aid procedures and the basic skills for survival in the wild. In turn, he wrote a small handbook to teach army men first aid, outdoor survival tactics and leadership. The book caught the attention of young English boys, so Robert began to explore the possibility of developing a training program geared toward this age group. This was the foundation for the birth of the Boy Scouts. In 1913 Robert Baden-Powell invited General William Booth to become a member of the governing body of world scouting. The general saw great potential in the program for The Salvation Army and out of it inaugurated the Life Saving Scout Movement. This step marked the beginning of a multi-faceted troop program for boys and girls in The Salvation Army. The first girl guard troop sprouted in London, England, in 1915 and was called the Life-Saving Girl Guards. It reflected the structure and tenor of the Life Saving Scouts program. Much of the training was similar, but other focuses such as homemaking skills were included. The original Life-Saving Girl Guard badge featured a lamp, representing guarding the soul; an eye, representing guarding the mind; crossed clubs, representing guarding the body; Bible representing the importance of God in their lives; and a patrol of girls, representing guarding others. The motto was “To save and to serve.” After the first girl guard troop was inaugurated in the United States by National Commander Evangeline Booth in 1916, the program spread across the nation.   It is interesting to note that the American badge never had the bottom section with "To save and to serve" on it. That was purely UK and Europe.

Book looks new and unread to me   ****   This is a charming collection of literary pieces written by 24 South Africans including Fiona Snyckers, Zukiswa Wanner, Naomi Nkealah, Jo-Anne Richards, and Phillippa Yaa de Villiers.  All the stories revolve around the theme of being away from home.  Each story is set at different times in different parts of the world but have at their core, themes of deracination, belonging and migration. The 24 chapters give readers a bird’s eye view of one day around the world and invite them to define what and where ‘home’ truly is.  Beautiful and thought-provoking; the stories are remarkably different in tone and style, yet fit together as a cohesive whole to make a powerful statement. ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

God of War II (PS2) Platform: PlayStation2 Condition: New Other versions of this game available from us: Platform: Pre-Owned/Used: Very Good Condition copies available Product Information Huge Collection of Combat Moves: Players can utilize their favourite combo attacks from GOD OF WAR along with a whole new set of moves and magic. Magic is based on nature's elements which include utilizing the power if wind, ice and much more New Characters: From the popular Cyclops and Cerebus to the Flying Gryphon and more, players will encounter some of the greatest Greek mythological beasts, along with more enemies and bosses Puzzle Solving: GOD OF WAR II features more puzzle solving, where players must solve intelligent, challenging and progressively more complicated puzzles latent with brutal elements that are intricately woven into the overarching story Exploration: Players will continue their previous experiences in the dark, violent world of Greek mythology and test their agility through more levels as they traverse treacherous, often brutal terrain that will range from the undiscovered Sisters of Fate to the Dark Swap and more Product Description Review In a nutshell: The sleeper hit of 2005 returns with Kratos seeking an escape from his fate as the new god of war. The games even more bloody and violent than before as you take on every mythological monster in the book. The lowdown: Given the quick turnaround from the first game this isnt an enormous departure from the original, but thats no bad thing with a series as accomplished as this. Kratos has a new range of moves, combos and magic to unleash but the biggest changes are in the variety of monsters he has to face. The bigger ones can only be beaten with special button presses, which result in some spectacular finishing moves such as the Cylops whose eye Kratos plucks out of its socket or the cannon fodder zombies he slices in two. One of the best sequences though has Kratos leaping off the back of a Pegasus and onto a Gryphon, whose wings he promptly pulls off before falling to the world below. Most exciting moment: Just like the original this game recreates many of the best moments from ancient Greek mythology and movies. One particularly cool sequence involves trying to get a golden fleece that can reflect back the stony gaze of a gorgon. Since you ask: Many fans were surprised that this sequel wasnt on the PS3 but a next generation version is being planned. Original creator David Jaffe isnt working on either sequel at the moment though, but on an as yet unrevealed PSP project. The bottom line: Kratos sticks to what he knows best: the PS2 and ultra violence. HARRISON DENT Manufacturer's Description The story picks up where players last left off with Kratos. Sitting atop his throne on Olympus, Kratos, the once mortal warrior has become a threat far worse than his predecessor Ares, had ever been. Kratos is a ruthless God, whose wrath strikes down anyone who crosses his path or the path of his beloved Sparta. The Ghost of Sparta sets out to alter that which no mortal, or god has ever changed, his fate. Kratos' journey brings him to the very edge of the Earth, facing countless beasts, monsters, and horrors from his previous life, all bent on preventing him from reaching his goal. But this is Kratos, and his defiance is filled with such arrogance and contempt that all of the Ancient World still trembles at his name: Kratos, the God of War.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days This smart, lyrical collection explores the dangers of a world so complex that no single consciousness may grasp it--however much the attempt must be made. Following historical and imagined figures as they encounter specific moments or objects (such as Thomas Hariot in the Ameri-can Wilderness of the late 16th century), the poems attempt to record the unraveling of the safe and singular into a multiplicity of unknowns. Impelled by metaphor and lilting repetition, "North True South Bright "seeks a sense of the world, and ultimately, a sense of the Infinite. Hariot's Round I know, to entice, to convince, I must sing Your ear inside stone, must sing Gold bitten and true, the corn kernel, one seed, I must plant one gold seed in your mouth with my lips. Raleigh says: the Queen known my name. The Crown Of a "woodpecker" is ruby, but shy. Inhabitants adorn themselves with feathers, and feathers Bright on arrow ends. Bow--before a Queen. Bend closed my book. The page is deaf that turns back to look at what it found." "In "North True South Bright," Dan Beachy-Quick proves the compass of his eye to be perfectly exact, precisely true. These poems are finely made contemporaries of sunlight. And, like sunlight, their history is Now."--Donald Revell Features Summary This lyric debut collection is grounded in history and nature. This book leads you on a journey through the life, work and legacy of one of history's most intriguing figures.' The Times In an engaging personal narrative interwoven with historical research, Martin Kemp discusses a life spent immersed in the world of Leonardo, and his encounters with great and lesser academics, collectors and curators, devious dealers and unctuous auctioneers, major scholars and authors, pseudo-historians and fantasists. He shares how he has grappled with swelling legions of `Leonardo loonies', walked on the eggshells of vested interests in academia and museums, and fended off fusillades of non-Leonardos, sometimes more than one a week. Examining the greatest masterpieces, from the Last Supper to Salvator Mundi, through the expert's eye, we learn first-hand of the thorny questions that surround attribution, the scientific analyses that support the experts' interpretations, and the continuing importance of connoisseurship. Throughout, from the most scholarly interpretations to the popularity of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, we are reminded of Leonardo's unique genius and wonder at how an artist from 500 years ago continues to make such compelling posthumous demands on all those who engage with him. Features Summary Martin Kemp, described by The Times as `the world's leading authority on Leonardo', relates his fifty-year relationship with the most famous artist of all time. Author Martin J. The author, a foremost figure in the field, joins forces with his alter ego, the incorrigible Korski, to draw fire from his own personal and professional experience. No one knows better than they the stuffy censorship and skewed logic that inform the geography establishment and stifle the valiant geographer -- and they tell all. With an unsparing eye, Geography Inside Out exposes a discipline soiled by cerebral litter and shamed by intellectual cowardice. Symanski shows no mercy for the pompous, the mediocre, or the hypocritical. And he reveals the devastating truth about a geographer blackballed for life for writing about prostitution and for his intellectual attack of a major figure within the discipline. Using Princess Diana's somber funeral as the frame, this video ("The Official BBC Commemorative Video," the packaging boasts) takes an admiring and elegant look at the world's most photographed woman. Thrust into the public eye at age 19, the aristocratic teen married into the royal family and became, as has been much quoted, the People's Princess. These well-narrated video segments (yes, BBC footage) are from official and public events: from photographers' pursuits of the child-care worker to her engagement to Prince Charles to her magnificent wedding (seen by more than 5 million viewers) to Prince William's birth to her many royal tours, duties, and speeches. The Diana who captured the public's fancy, who held hands with AIDs patients, who embraced the homeless, who championed land-mine victims, who departed from the stuffy royal ways, is respectfully captured here. While the controversial Andrew Morton book and her separation and subsequent divorce from Prince Charles are covered, the producers elected to steer clear of the more sensational and gossipy aspects of her fulfilled, though difficulty-plagued, life. Whatever the Buckingham Palace spin is--that Charles is experiencing renewed popularity, that his longtime mistress is gradually being accepted, and that Diana, by those in Charles's camp, was "crazy"--it cannot detract from the remarkable and impressive legacy Diana unselfishly left for Britain and for her sons, one of whom will one day be king. --N.F.Mendoza
