Elephants are arguably Africa¿s most charismatic animals, and among the biggest drawcards to our game reserves. While the burgeoning game-park industry may be increasing our access to these magnificent creatures, rising human-elephant encounters are an inevitable outcome ¿ sometimes, sadly, fatal. Such encounters could likely have been avoided had those involved understood elephant behaviour, and particularly how these intelligent animals interface with traffic through their territory. This book describes elephant family life, from rearing of infants to establishing dominance within a herd; it unpacks regular elephant behaviour, the matriarchal system, the particular dangers of males in musth, and many other aspects of their lives. Most of all, it provides guidelines for ensuring safe and enjoyable encounters with these majestic animals. This is an essential guide for those planning visits to reserves: aside from the interest factor, being able to read the tell-tale signs may just save lives.

The Derelict House: Elephants In My Garden: Lesley Cripps Thomson: Inscribed | Autographed Publisher: Just Don Productions Publishing, Durban Edition: 2008 – First Edition Binding: Softcover ISBN: 978-1-920169-90-9 Pages: 244 with black & white photograph and illustrations   Extra Information Condition – Good. Slight wear to cover, edges and corners, otherwise really clean with tight binding Language: English.   The Derelict House: Elephants in My Garden describes Elephants breaking down walls, a hyena sharing a fire with the night guard to keep warm, hippos fighting, armless monkeys bringing their young to be admired by the author. This book is a kaleidoscope of wild animals, strange and often eccentric tourists, the trials and tribulations of running a poorly equipped lodge in a remote wilderness area and the laughter and tears of working with and living alongside staff from a different background and culture.   Written with great compassion, this is Lesley Cripps Thomson’s story of how she forges a bond with staff who do not want to be told what to door how to do it by a woman – and the hardships they have had to live with, including illness and poverty. She tells of the good times they have had and how, in a crisis, they all pull together.   The Derelict House: Elephants in My Garden, also describes the consequences of interference with nature on the environment, the devastating effect of 9/11 on their American guests, the joy of guests seeing wildlife up close for the first time and the sadness of leaving it all behind   Beautifully illustrated, this charming book brings Africa to life, in all her colours and moods   Please note that we refer the right to close our auctions at any time Please refer to all images for condition, as this form an integral part of the description Payment to be processed within 2 days of auction closing Item will be posted on the first Saturday following receipt of payment.  Book in great condition - Actually looks new and unread to me - 280 pages.   >>>    A true story filled with both joy and foreboding, this portrait of Zimbabwe and its wildlife comes from an Australian woman who went as a tourist to Africa and then decided to leave her old life and live permanently in tumultuous Zimbabwe to work with elephants on land bordering Hwange National Park. Not a scientist, she wanted to observe elephant interaction informally, and this moving memoir describes how, in time, she and the elephants developed affectionate relationships with each other. As the beauty and wonder of the park became increasingly threatened by illegal snaring of wildlife and land invaders claimed the territory where her elephant herd roamed, she went into battle for the animals—and this compelling account reveals how she put her  own survival at risk.     * Rhodesia * *N.B.*  If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – See what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

Hardback. English. BBC Books. 2001. ISBN: 9780563537908. 249pp. Hardback in fair condition. From space, Africa is a shattered land, textured by burning sands, seas of grass and steaming forests. It is scarred by mountains and bejewelled by great lakes and rivers. This ancient continent is also alive with some of the greatest wildlife on Earth. The book covers the fragmented areas of Africa: the jungle, the mountains, the savannah, the rivers and lakes, the coasts, and the deserts. It shows how a once stable continent has been fragmented and how this process has catalyzed the evolution of some remarkable animals and plants. In the savannah, carnivorous ants consume as much meat as lions, while in the jungle, where light barely penetrates the lef canopy, there are diminutuve forms of familiar animals - pygmy chimpanzees, forest elephants and dwarf hippos. " Have you ever wondered what it would be like to grow up with the wilds of Africa in your back yard ?  Bill Taylor, the author of Wet Breams, was raised in East Africa. Although he was the son of a Seventh Day Adventist missionary doctor and was sent away to England, South Africa, France, and the United States for most of his formal education, he was allowed to run wild in the bush around his boyhood home. Wet Breams is an anecdotal collection of memoirs about his unusual life. Most of the stories are uproariously funny. They entertain like tall tales, but in Taylor's case, the stories are (mostly, I suspect) true. Take for example the time as a teenager when he managed to live for three months within a herd of elephants. In order to be accepted by the herd, he first had to take off all his clothes and cover himself in elephant dung. In this state, he then had to hang out around the edge of the herd for over three days before the elephants would allow him to walk among them. William Holmes Taylor holds a degree in Biology and a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. The African bush is his passion and the place where he spends most of his time and energy. Dentistry is merely one of his on-again-off-again hobbies, a labor of necessity, not a labor of love.

1986 first edition A4 size hardcover with dust jacket and 156 pages in good condition. R60 postage in SA. Namibia, SWA, South West Africa, Suidwes-Afrika.   Northwest Namibia is a desert - rugged, utterly uncompromising, frequently beautiful and always fascinating. It comprises two adjoining tribal homelands. Damaraland and Koakoland, and until recently was virtually untouched by the intrusive influence of the technological age. Here live great herbivores such as elephants, rhinos, and giraffe, in an environment unlike any other in Africa. Living amongst them are Himba Pastoralists, a tribe that time has left behind. The author joined the area's resident ecologist, Garth Owen-Smith, to see for himself what has happened here. This book deals with the people they met and the wildlife encountered - it tackles the problems caused by the war between the South African Army ad the Swapo guerillas which spilled over into this area; the poaching that is going on there, and the effects of a crippling five-year drought.
