Elephants are arguably Africa¿s most charismatic animals, and among the biggest drawcards to our game reserves. While the burgeoning game-park industry may be increasing our access to these magnificent creatures, rising human-elephant encounters are an inevitable outcome ¿ sometimes, sadly, fatal. Such encounters could likely have been avoided had those involved understood elephant behaviour, and particularly how these intelligent animals interface with traffic through their territory. This book describes elephant family life, from rearing of infants to establishing dominance within a herd; it unpacks regular elephant behaviour, the matriarchal system, the particular dangers of males in musth, and many other aspects of their lives. Most of all, it provides guidelines for ensuring safe and enjoyable encounters with these majestic animals. This is an essential guide for those planning visits to reserves: aside from the interest factor, being able to read the tell-tale signs may just save lives.

This book is a kaleidoscope of wild animals, strange and often eccentric tourists, the trials and tribulations of running a poorly equipped lodge in a remote wilderness area and the laughter and tears of working with and living alongside staff from a different background and culture.   Written with great compassion, this is Lesley Cripps Thomson’s story of how she forges a bond with staff who do not want to be told what to door how to do it by a woman – and the hardships they have had to live with, including illness and poverty. She tells of the good times they have had and how, in a crisis, they all pull together.   The Derelict House: Elephants in My Garden, also describes the consequences of interference with nature on the environment, the devastating effect of 9/11 on their American guests, the joy of guests seeing wildlife up close for the first time and the sadness of leaving it all behind   Beautifully illustrated, this charming book brings Africa to life, in all her colours and moods   Please note that we refer the right to close our auctions at any time Please refer to all images for condition, as this form an integral part of the description Payment to be processed within 2 days of auction closing Item will be posted on the first Saturday following receipt of payment.  Book in great condition - Actually looks new and unread to me - 280 pages.   >>>    A true story filled with both joy and foreboding, this portrait of Zimbabwe and its wildlife comes from an Australian woman who went as a tourist to Africa and then decided to leave her old life and live permanently in tumultuous Zimbabwe to work with elephants on land bordering Hwange National Park. Not a scientist, she wanted to observe elephant interaction informally, and this moving memoir describes how, in time, she and the elephants developed affectionate relationships with each other. As the beauty and wonder of the park became increasingly threatened by illegal snaring of wildlife and land invaders claimed the territory where her elephant herd roamed, she went into battle for the animals—and this compelling account reveals how she put her  own survival at risk.     * Rhodesia * *N.B.*  If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – See what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

Central News Agency, 1986 Hardcover with dustjacket in good condition - some mild sunning to the spine. Beautifully illustrated by Peter Badcock. "Herman Charles Bosman (February 3, 1905 October 14, 1951) is the South African writer widely regarded as South Africa's greatest short story writer. He studied the works of Edgar Alan Poe and Mark Twain, and developed a style emphasizing the use of irony. His English-language works utilize primarily Afrikaner characters and point to the many contradictions of Afrikaner society in the first half of the twentieth century. The poet Roy Campbell called him "the only literary genius that South Africa has produced."

Hardback. English. BBC Books. 2001. ISBN: 9780563537908. 249pp. Hardback in fair condition. From space, Africa is a shattered land, textured by burning sands, seas of grass and steaming forests. It is scarred by mountains and bejewelled by great lakes and rivers. This ancient continent is also alive with some of the greatest wildlife on Earth. The book covers the fragmented areas of Africa: the jungle, the mountains, the savannah, the rivers and lakes, the coasts, and the deserts. It shows how a once stable continent has been fragmented and how this process has catalyzed the evolution of some remarkable animals and plants. In the savannah, carnivorous ants consume as much meat as lions, while in the jungle, where light barely penetrates the lef canopy, there are diminutuve forms of familiar animals - pygmy chimpanzees, forest elephants and dwarf hippos.
