"This remarkable diary covering the Siege of Kimberley and its aftermath was written by the German missionary, Carl Meyer. It is an important addition to the literature dealing with this historical event as it presents a unique insight into the effect of the war on social conditions of the time. Meyer, a politically neutral person, committed himself tirelessly not only to the welfare of his flock, but also to the fair treatment of all parties involved in the war, regardless of race or political affiliation. The reader is drawn into the everyday problems besetting the dedicated and selfless pastor, a man who never spared himself and in consequence passed away the day before the armstice of the South African Anglo-Boer War. It is a human interest story which will be enjoyed by the layman as well as the academic. The manuscript of the diary was sent to Germany in in the mailboat, Mexican, which was sunk. Fortunately the diary was salvaged from the mailbag in a poor but legible condition. Very few of the original printed copies have survived; one of these was donated to the Kimberley Africana Library by the council chairman of the German Lutheran Church in ". Size: Octavo. SIGNED. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Cute but silly, this cautionary fantasy stars Matthew Broderick as a teenage computer genius who hacks into the Pentagon's defence system and sets World War III into motion. All the fun is in the film's set-up, as Broderick befriends Ally Sheedy and starts the international crisis by pretending while online to be the Soviet Union. After that, it's not hard to predict what's going to happen: government agents swoop in, but the story ends up in the "hands" of machines talking to one another.

Ever since 9/11 America has fought an endless war on terror, seeking enemies everywhere and never promising peace. In "Pay Any Price," James Risen reveals an extraordinary litany of the hidden costs of that war: from squandered and stolen dollars, to outrageous abuses of power, to wars on normalcy, decency, and truth. In the name of fighting terrorism, our government has done things every bit as shameful as its historic wartime abuses?and until this audiobook, it has worked very hard to cover them up. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus. FDR authorized the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans. Presidents Bush and Obama now must face their own reckoning. Power corrupts, but it is endless war that corrupts absolutely. Features Summary War corrupts. Endless war corrupts absolutely.   HarperCollins Publishers. Hardback. Book Condition: Very good, 2009, 1st edition. 388 pp. Alamein, Iain Gale, The superb novelist of men at war moves into the twentieth century and World War Two, telling the story of the eleven days in the sands of North Africa that would change history forever. There are some battles that change the course of history: Alamein is one of those. In October 1942, Britain and its allies were in real difficulties: Germany and its Axis partners seemed to be triumphant everywhere - in Europe, in Russia, in the Atlantic and were now poised to take the Suez Canal. It was in North Africa that the stand was made, that the tide of World War Two began to turn. It was a battle of strong characters: the famous battle commander Rommel and the relatively untested new British commander, Montgomery, leading men who fought through an extraordinary eleven day battle, in an unforgiving terrain, amid the swirling sandstorms and the desert winds. Iain Gale, author of the outstanding historical novel Four Days in June on the battle of Waterloo, tells the dramatic story through seven characters, almost all based on real people. Drawn from both sides of the conflict, they include a major from a Scottish brigade, the young lieutenant in the thick of the tank battle, the Australian sergeant with the infantry, the tank commander of the Panzer Division and the charismatic Italian commander of a parachute battalion. Through them and others we see the flow of battle, the strategies, the individual actions and skirmishes, the fear, the determination, the extraordinary courage on both sides.
