David Livingstone: The Unexplored Story by Stephen Tomkins (2013) David Livingstone has gone down in history as a fearless explorer and missionary, hacking his way through the jungles of Africa to bring light to the people and also to free them from slavery. But who was he, and what was he actually like? He was an extraordinary character according to biographer Stephen Tomkins unbelievably bad at personal relationships, at least with white people, with infinite self-belief, courage and restlessness. He was a flawed but indomitable idealist.  Fascinating new evidence about Livingstones life, and his struggles have come to light in the letters and journals he left behind, now accessible to us for the first time through spectral imaging. These form a large part of the source material for this excellent biography, which provides an honest and balanced account of the real man behind the Victorian icon. 192 p. 0.76 cm

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Wardlock 1912 I have many books on sale, please check my listings. I am happy to combine and save postage for you Product Description David Copperfield is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy & impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; & the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations. In David Copperfield —the novel he described as his “favorite child”—Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant & enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy & comedy in equal measure. Originally published as a monthly serial, from 4/1849 to 11/1850.

Book in good condition but dustcover has creases and a bit worn around spine.  By Ned Middleton TOP 500 REVIEWER on May 2, 2007 If had to recommend two books to anyone seeking an excellent read which will make them laugh, I would look no further than "The Moon's a Balloon" and "Bring on the Empty Horses!" These are two of the funniest and most satisfying books I have ever read. There were several different aspects to David Niven's life. Having arrived in Hollywood, he was required to learn his trade in "B" movies before being allowed to enter the big time from where he eventually won an Oscar. Unlike some of the greats of Hollywood, he also put his entire acting career on hold whilst he served as a British officer in a fighting unit throughout WW2. "The Moon's a Balloon" recounts the first half of his life's story in which we meet some of the rich and famous stars of that Hollywood of yester-year and learn a little about each of these people and their various relationships. In "Bring on the Empty Horses" Niven confirms his credentials as an ingenious writer as he pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes in this sequel. Not once does he stoop to the level of cheap gossip, not once does attack the person he is describing. Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of humour. Only a writer who had also been a central part of that glorious cast of characters and real-life people could possibly have produced this work. I promise, you will not want either book to end - they really are so enjoyable. There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people you just know they would approve of what he has said. As an actor, David Niven was the good guy, the dashing hero, the sort of character to whom we would all wish to aspire. As an author, he writes about his fellow personalities from the Hollywood of yester-year with whom he worked and came into contact without exposing their shortcomings. Instead, he simply makes us laugh and, as I say, those of whom he writes would, therefore, approve. If you are a fan of the olden days, the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy these two books. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy them even more. Truth is, I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying either product. What more can I say except I know you will not be disappointed.

The story goes inside the dressing-room, takes in their unscheduled, week-long, bonding trek to Siberia and back for a European Challenge Cup game, and all the key twists and turns along the way. It brings us the characters in this Band of Brothers, from the locals such as captain John Muldoon from Portumna to their iconic fans' favourite Bundee Aki - who like their talismanic coach Pat Lam is a Kiwi from Auckland of Samoan descent - and their Nigerian-born and Dublin-raised match-winner Niyi Adeolokun. The story takes in the province's troubled professional history, which had them on the brink of extinction as a professional entity in 2003 and led to Connacht and their supporters marching to the IRFU offices in a successful bid to keep them afloat. It covers their dethroning of the champions Glasgow in the Sportsground in Galway and their stunning performance in the final against Leinster in Edinburgh. In more than two decades of professional rugby, there has been no story quite like it. David Philip, 1999, 1st edition. As new, unmarked. 24x15cm, 219 pp "It is the twenty-second year of Nelson Mandela's imprisonment and a country is gripped with civil unrest. A black policeman is beaten to death and his body burned during a riot. Twenty-five people are convicted of his murder; fourteen are sentenced to death. A small town is besieged by their legal trial, and one of the lawyers is brutally assassinated. This is the story of Upington Twenty-five men and women, from teenage boys to an elderly couple are all accused of the same crime: acting with a common purpose. Durbach and the other members of the legal team took the case after the death sentences had been handed down and had only a matter of weeks to sort through thousands of court papers, to get to know each of the defendants, referred to only by numbers in all court documents, and mount a proper appeal. Durbach recounts the specifics of the case, recreating trial testimony and judicial opinions, and giving the book the air of a charged courtroom drama. We meet each of the accused, hear their stories and follow the Herculean effort by this group of lawyers to save the lives of the accused-both innocent and guilty. The details surrounding the case lead us to question our own prejudices and assumptions: the fact that al twenty-five were involved in the riot that led to the death of the policeman, does that make all twenty-five guilty? Those some of the accused confessed, are the others guilty by association and proximity?.,." - Publisher's description.
