Free Postage Within SA for Orders Over R900! Hardcover. . Chatto & Windus / Random House. 262 pages. Very good condition (some shelf wear and other general signs of use). An exploration of the challenged state of masculinity in our post-feminist society of gender equality. As we reach the millennium, there is hardly anything to be done that cannot be done by women - where does this leave men? Have men been pushed out of parenting - even of procreation? The brute strength of the male is no longer necessary to mine coal or build ships - or even make war. Men don't have to "provide" for their families, as more women harness their intelligence and generate their own incomes. Is it surprising that male suicides outnumber female by a factor of 3 or 4 to 1, or that the predilection of males to be violent - once seen as a source of pride - now seems to threaten our very culture and civilisation? Is what Clare calls the "phallic man" - assertive, authoritative, dominant, in control not only of himself but of women - dying out? As a practising psychiatrist, Anthony Clare brings a knowledge of science and medicine plus a deep understanding of the human heart and mind to this lively, readable, fair-handed and above all sympathetic examination of the male in today's society. After an era of dynastic crisis, the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg which reigned in Denmark, ascended the throne in 1762 with Peter III, a grandson of Peter I. All rulers from the middle of the 18th century to the revolution of 1917 were descended from that branch. Kennedy History: John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. He enrolled at Harvard in 1940 and, during his senior year, wrote his thesis on Great Britain’s lack of readiness for war with Germany, which was later published as Why England Slept. Despite numerous health problems, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and went to the South Pacific, where he was injured when the patrol torpedo boat he commanded was rammed by an enemy warship. Despite his injuries, Kennedy guided the surviving crew members to safety and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart for his heroism. Following his military service, Kennedy worked as a reporter for a brief period before successfully running for the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1947 to 1953, and then the U.S. Senate, serving there from 1953 to 1960. During his tenure in the Senate, while recuperating from back surgery, Kennedy wrote his Pulitzer Prize–winning book, Profiles in Courage. The Democratic Party nominated Kennedy as its candidate for president in 1960. He won the election by a small margin, becoming the youngest man elected president and the first Roman Catholic to hold the office. Kennedy was in office less than three years when he was struck down by an assassin’s bullet on November 22, 1963.
