BLACK FRIDAY SPECIAL DEAL VINTAGE SET OF 2 NEW ONYX VASES circa 1970's 20cm X 7.5cm Description: These are beautifully ornate items in superb condition. The colours are a combination of variegated cream, jade green, with shades of brown and honey. The items are manufactured from Onyx and they are ideal for decorating and for use as vases whether indoor or outdoors. Water cannot damage Onyx. (Please do NOT use hot water either for cleaning or other reasons as the hot water may damage the lustre of the Onyx. Condition: These exquisite vases are in an immaculate condition (unused) with no chips, cracks or scratches. Dimensions: Height: 20 cm x Width 7.5 cm Weight: 1.492 Kgs (combined weight for the two) Onyx vs Alabaster: There is a trend to confuse Onyx and Alabaster, when they are in  fact completely different, mainly in weight and strength. On the Mohs hardness scale - ONYX = 7  whilst Alabaster = 1.5 to 2 (interesting to note that our fingernails are 2.5) Thus Onyx is a much harder material than Alabaster approx. 4 times the density and weight and is nowadays worked upon and cut & polished by use of diamond wheels and grits. This results in Onyx commanding a much higher valuation than Alabaster. Alabaster is delicate and can be scratched by a copper coin or even your fingernail. (Please - Scratch on the underside of an item as this is usually not polished). Alabaster is also very susceptible to water and heat making it unsuitable for outdoor use. Alabaster is the colourful massive form of the mineral Gypsum, whilst Onyx is made of much harder microcrystalline Quartz. Kindly note that there is a reflection from the camera flash, and that colours may vary from monitor settings on individual screens. Reminds me of the vases coming out the 1970's. It is in previously owned good condition. Not sure of the age but is a contemporary It measures approximately height 27.5cm and the rim diameter 12cm It is marked ANT on the body of the piece. ANT is a South African maker. Forgot to photograph the marking. Imagine this piece with beautiful red roses for contrast.
