Theodore 'Tiger' Flowers rose above the racist bigotry of the Deep South to become the first African-American middleweight champion of the world. To do it, this Christian family man beat a boxing legend, Harry Greb, in the first of the great sporting cathedrals, Madison Square Garden. It was a victory that stunned the sporting world and made him a household name. Yet within a year he had lost his championship on a decision some said was influenced by Al Capone - and within another year was dead, following a seemingly innocuous operation, in the clinic of a controversial surgeon, to remove lumps and scars above his eyes. Was his death, at the age of 34, an accident, a result of negligence, or something more sinister? And what was behind his white manager's attempt to throw Tiger's widow into an asylum and their daughter into an orphanage? Flowers' inspiring, harrowing story, set against an horrific backdrop of lynchings and routine prejudice, is largely forgotten now but he paved the way for black sporting heroes like Joe Louis, Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This book covers the birth of a new super hero in the form of Miranda Knight. ' WHOOSH'. Miranda Don't Open Your Eyes is volume one and is extremely funny. The antics of a cheeky youngster growing up in a warm and loving atmosphere with an occasional tug of the heartstrings. Our hero hates all forms of bullying or any mistreatment of 'those less fortunate.' The story highlights the adventures of 12 year old Miranda. She has an IQ of 143 and is a Martial Arts Junior National Champion. As her mother and father tackle their parental duties and responsibilities amidst an atmosphere of fun and laughter, we share the young formative years of a highly intelligent child who quickly displays a deep concern for people less fortunate than herself. Whilst 'learning as much as they are teaching', Miranda's parents never avoid an issue whenever she asks a serious question. She displays a deep concern over poverty and hardship in the third world. At the age of twelve she openly declares that when she is grown up she will try to help those in need of love and support..Miranda comes into possession of a magical book which transports her back to late Victorian times. The year is 1896, times are hard and Miranda witnesses abject poverty and aspects of cruelty. She encounters a gang of ragamuffins led by a large girl bully named Florence. In a manner most pleasing, Miranda subdues an attack on her person and immediately lectures her assailant. However, when attacked by Florence's older brother, she displays her amazing skills and wins the respect of the whole gang. Later in the story, the bully girl approaches Miranda and asks for her forgiveness and friendship. Tears flow as Miranda comforts the girl and explains to her the way forward. Having witnessed unbelievable brutality and starvation exacted on an eleven year old waif named Elizabeth, Miranda sees no alternative to bringing her home to the year 2015. much to the amazement of her parents! Miranda is often cheeky but never disrespectful. Throughout the many comical encounters in this book, Miranda emphasis's the importance of working hard at school, getting on with ones parents and never getting involved with bullies. This is a book for all ages to read and enjoy.
