Catedral de Santiago, Gold Plated Bar, Commemorative Spain, Church Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country:   Metal Purity:    Gold Plated, Gilded Box:   Year of Issue:   Weight:   1 oz CoA:   Face Value:   Dimensions:   44x 28¿mm     Quality:       Mintage:     New bar with capsule The gilded bar contains the images of the Cathedral of St. James which is world¿s famous Catholic shrine and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral was built in Galicia, Spain on the burial-place of the apostle Saint James the Great in the XII century. The legend says that the tomb of the apostle who had brought Christianity to Iberian Peninsula was found right in that place. The city of Santiago de Compostela grew up around the basilica later. All four picturesque fa?ades of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral differ from each other, the building was constantly decorated and rebuilt, still the main style of it applies to the Middle Ages. One side of the token depicts the splendid western fa?ade of the Cathedral along with Spanish name of the church meaning ¿Santiago Cathedral¿. The reverse side is dedicated to the popular pilgrimage route to the tomb of Saint James the Great. It features the words ¿Road to Santiago¿ in Spanish and a scallop image which is the symbol of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostella. In addition to the religious and metaphorical interpretations of the symbol it claims to have a quite prosaic origin of seashells often found by pilgrims on the Atlantic coast of Spain. ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Part of a graded set on auction. Please look at my other listings. This is a set of banknotes issued to commemorate the Centenary of Nelson Mandela. This is a first on BOB! This set is graded by PMG, sister company of NGC. The set consists of 4x SA serial numbers and 1x SD serial numbers. SA serial numbers are equivalent to AA serial numbers. Not many of these sets have been graded and as the run has apparently ended, very few SA serial numbered notes in Mint State condition will be available for grading. With all the fakes finding their way into our markets at an alarming pace, now is the time to protect your investment and collect graded South African banknotes!   South African Banknotes Most South African Collectors collect at least 1 banknote from each Governor of the Reserve Bank. There were 10 Governors since the inception of the Reserve Bank: 1)        William Clegg 2)        Johannes Postmus 3)        M H de Kock 4)        Gerhard Rissik 5)        T W de Jongh 6)        Gerhard de Kock (Son of M H de Kock) 7)        Chris L Stals 8)        Tito Mboweni 9)        Gill Marcus 10)    Lesetja Kganyago One can also complete the series of banknotes issued by each Governor.

Metal: 999.9 Au Mintage: 7000 Actual Mintage:6317 Weight: 1 oz The reverse of the Protea R25 (1 oz) gold coin depicts both Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk. The Nobel Peace Prize for 1993 was jointly awarded to these two South African leaders in recognition of their efforts and as a pledge of support for the forces of good, in the hope that the advance towards equality and democracy would reach its goal in the very near future. This became a reality in 1994 with the formation of the first democratic South Africa. When Nelson Mandela bade farewell to Parliament five years after he was sworn in as South Africa’s first democratically elected President, he urged South Africans never to forget their past, but to use it as a tool in overcoming the challenges still facing the country. FW de Klerk, who retired from politics in 1991, praised all South Africans for their role in bringing about change in the country, asking them to join hands for further socio-economic transformation, saying the challenges were still huge.   On the common obverse, a King Protea, the words “South Africa” and the year “2007” are featured.

MANDELA 100 - HISTORICAL MANDELA AND FW DE KLERK HONOURED AS NOBEL LAUREATES Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013) served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999. A Xhosa born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, where he studied law. Living in Johannesburg, he became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the National Party came to power in 1948 and began implementing the policy of apartheid, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, was elected President of the Transvaal ANC Branch and oversaw the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership, was prosecuted in the Treason Trial from 1956 to 1961 but was found not guilty. Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961, leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison, first on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990 amid escalating civil strife. Becoming ANC President, Mandela published his autobiography and led negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He was elected President and formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to defuse ethnic tensions. As President, he established a new constitution and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. Continuing the former government's liberal economic policy, his administration introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty and expand healthcare services. Internationally, he acted as mediator between Libya and the United Kingdom in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial, and oversaw military intervention in Lesotho. He declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki, subsequently becoming an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Controversial for much of his life, right-wing critics denounced Mandela as a terrorist and communist sympathiser. He has nevertheless received international acclaim for his anti-colonial and anti-apartheid stance, having received over 250 awards, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name of Madiba or as Tata meaning Father; he is often described as "the father of the nation". The cover is in clean condition. Sent by registered / parcel post (free for orders over R250). Feel free to combine with any other items.
