The magnum opus of one of America's most respected military historians, The Art of War in the Western World has earned its place as the standard work on how the three major operational components of war - tactics, logistics, and strategy - have evolved and changed over time. This monumental work encompasses 2,500 years of military history, from infantry combat in ancient Greece through the dissolution of the Roman Empire to the Thirty Years' War and from the Napoleonic campaigns through World War II, which Jones sees as the culmination of modern warfare, to the Israeli-Egyptian War of 1973.   1992 1st Edition 303pp Hardcover with B&W photos Book Very Good, DJ Very Good some very minor shelfwear, contents very clean and crisp, tightly bound. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms. Photos.

From Mushroom Valley to Delville Wood, South African Forces in World War One researched and excellently written by Tim Couzens. When war struck in 1914, it struck not just in Europe, but everywhere across the globe, including South Africa, whose troops saw action in five theatres. They fought one another on home soil, during a rebellion fuelled by old resentments; they fought the Germans in the deserts of South West Africa and the jungles of East Africa (now Namibia and Tanzania); they fought in Egypt; and they fought, and died in their thousands, on the Western Front. Tim Couzens’ The Great Silence tells the story of South Africa’s Great War, meticulously bringing the details of the different campaigns to light, with a dedicated chapter on each major theatre of action, from Sandfontein to Delville Wood, plus a special chapter on the contribution of black South African troops to the Allies’ ultimate victory. Fully illustrated with over 150 photographs, maps and graphics, and with eight special insets on some of the more extraordinary characters in the war – such as Jackie the baboon, who was wounded by shrapnel in Flanders and returned to South Africa a hero – The Great Silence takes us into the dark heart of the Great War itself. Softcover in good condition.266 pages. Illustrated. Tracked postage is R50.00.

The First Campaign Victory of the Great War: South Africa, Manoeuvre Warfare, the Afrikaner Rebellion and the German South West African Campaign, 1914-1915. The First World War moulded the global landscape and had a lasting effect on much of the World. Where the majority of international research focusses on the European theatre, Antonio Garcia explores one of the peripheral campaigns of the Great War. South Africas First World War campaign in German South West Africa was a daring military undertaking epitomised by manoeuvre and rapidity. The author takes a novel approach in comparing the campaign to manoeuvre warfare theory. Manoeuvre theory is based on the principles of mobility, rapidity and surprise which attempts to achieve victory with the least loss of resources and in the shortest time possible. In order to achieve a rapid victory against the German forces, the South African soldiers were pushed to the limits of exhaustion to achieve the Union of South Africas strategic objectives. The campaign in the deserts of German South Africa became the setting for adventure and war, where Briton, Boer and People of Colour served together as a Dominion of the British Empire. Blacks, Coloureds and Indians fought for the hopes of better political franchise, an ambition which was not to be achieved until 80 years later. The book addresses the complex political dynamics in South Africa at the time of the Great War, the deep division between Afrikaners and British South Africans and the Afrikaner Rebellion. With the backdrop of political difficulties and a lack of overwhelming support for the entry into the Great War, the Botha government needed a quick result so as to maintain the delicate balance of power. The author provides an analysis on the campaign through the lens of military theory so as to determine how the swift victory was achieved. The book answers the question of whether the campaign was won through numerical superiority or through the use of a superior operational strategy. The victory was the first campaign victory led by a British Dominion. Paperback, 208 pages.

SAS Savage Wars of Peace - Anthony Kemp - 1994 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition.  This work, the sequel to Anthony Kemp's definitive "The SAS at War", which dealt with the foundation of the Regiment by David Stirling and its role up to 1945, takes the story forward to the storming of the Iranian Embassy, the attack on the IRA in Gibraltar, and the under-cover Gulf War. Following the Second World War, the SAS became essentially a component of the British Army and took part in colonial campaigns, including those in Malaya, Borneo, South Arabia and Oman. Since 1969, though, elements of the Regiment have been stationed more or less permanently in an under-cover role in Northern Ireland. It was at about that time too that the Regiment became involved in counter terrorist activities elsewhere, including England itself. Since then a cloak of secrecy has descended over all SAS activities, including those in the Falklands and the Gulf War. Intense speculation has been the inevitable result. This book, based on interviews and on more co-operation than the SAS has granted any other writer, tells us the maximum compatible with security of a regiment which has become the most feared and respected of special forces anywhere in the world.

Binding: Softcover Pages: 64 Dimensions: 29.5 x 20.9 x 0.5 cm +++ by Andrew Hudson +++ Post-independence events in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are a veritable Gordian knot. The ambitions of Congolese political leaders, Cold War rivalry, Pan-Africanism, Belgium's continued economic interests in the country's mineral wealth, and the strategic perceptions of other southern African states all conspired to wrack Africa's second largest country with uprisings, rebellions and military interventions for almost a decade. Congo Unravelled solves the intractable complexity of this violent period by dispassionately outlining the sequence of political and military events that took place in the troubled country. The reader is systematically taken through the first military attempts to stabilize the country after independence and the two distinguishing military campaigns of the decade - the United Nations military operations (Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo, or ONUC) to end the secession of the Katanga Province, and the Dragon Operations led by Belgian paratroopers, supported by the US Air Force, launched to end the insurgency in the east of the country - are chronicled in detail. Finally, the mercenary revolt - an event that tainted the reputation of the modern mercenary in Africa - is described.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. Short Description Marto Mini Sword Roman. Silver detailed handle with mirror polished blade. Description Julius Caesar, Caius Julious Caesar (101 b.C. - 44 b.C.) was the greatest soldier and political leader of ancient Roma. During his lifetime the frontiers of the empire were pushed forward and secured, Rome was transformed from a republic into a government with a single ruler, and Caesar was it's first dictator. He wrote some of the finest works of history in Latin, describing the campaigns he fought in Caul and the Civil Wars, he was an architect, a mathematician, and one of the ancient's world orators. There is no doubt that Caesar was ambitious and that he enjoyed the great power placed in his hands. It is said that he wished to be crowned king. This was the reason that the conspirators led by Cassius and Brutus gave for his murder: Caesar has become too powerful and danger for the survival of the Republic.
