Set in South Africa's Rand, The City of Gold is a sequel to They Seek a Country (1937). The history of the Grafton family, taken up thirty years after the ending of the first novel stretches from 1872 to 1896. It is a story of the Annexation of the Transvaal; of Sekukuni's wars; of the development of the mining industry of the Transvaal; and of Johannesburg, the city of gold. Historical figures such as Kruger, Joubert, the Rhodes brothers and Jameson are included in the fiction. The brothers and sisters of the Grafton family represent a variety of opinion: nationalistic; pro-Boer; pro-English; moderate; and, in the case of Janse and Lena, South Africa as a great nation in which all races and groups would be reconciled. This is a magnificent novel bringing to life the beauty of an immense and varied land, and of its people, written with the sensitivity of a born poet.   Author: Francis Brett Young Format: Paperback Pages: 539pp ISBN: 2016111701

"Something for every mood finds a place in the collection; the serious, the light, the true, the thriller - and the poetry lover is not forgotten. The background is Africa, most of the contributions having been selected from the pens of authors who are among Southern Africa's most famous writers. To avoid the charge of excessive parochialism others whose names are known wherever the English word is read, are also included." Contributors include Edmund Blunden, Hector Bolitho, Stuart Cloete, Walter de la Mare, A. D. Divine, Lord Dunsany, John Gloag, A. P. Herbert, J. L. Hodson, Uys Krige, Sir Harry Luke, Sarah Gertrude Millin, Alan Paton, William Plomer, Eric Rosenthal, William Samson, F. Carey Slater, L. A. G. The Painted Man, book one of the Demon Cycle, is a captivating and thrilling fantasy adventure, pulling the reader into a world of demons, darkness and heroes. Voted one of the top ten fantasy novels of 2008 by amazon.co.uk. Sometimes there is very good reason to be afraid of the dark... Eleven-year-old Arlen lives with his parents on their small farmstead, half a day's ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet's Brook. As dusk falls upon Arlen's world, a strange mist rises from the ground; a mist that promises a violent death to any foolish enough to brave the coming darkness, for hungry corelings - demons that cannot be harmed by mortal weapons - materialize from the vapours to feed on the living. As the sun sets, people have no choice but to take shelter behind magical wards and pray that their protection holds until the creatures dissolve with the first signs of dawn. When Arlen's life is shattered by the demon plague, he is forced to see that it is fear, rather than the demons, which truly cripples humanity. Believing that there is more to his world than to live in constant fear, he must risk leaving the safety of his wards to discover a different path. In the small town of Cutter's Hollow, Leesha's perfect future is destroyed by betrayal and a simple lie. Publicly shamed, she is reduced to gathering herbs and tending an old woman more fearsome than the corelings. Yet in her disgrace, she becomes the guardian of dangerous ancient knowledge. Orphaned and crippled in a demon attack, young Rojer takes solace in mastering the musical arts of a Jongleur, only to learn that his unique talent gives him unexpected power over the night. Together, these three young people will offer humanity a last, fleeting chance of survival. Features Summary The stunning debut fantasy novel from author Peter V. Brett. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days In a one of a kind look at the Toronto Blue Jays 2013 season, two seasoned sports journalists take readers behind the scenes as the team stocks up on stars, revitalizes its fans and embarks on a campaign of shocking disillusionment. "Great Expectations" begins with a detailed look at how general manager Alex Anthopoulos pulled off the blockbuster trade that acquired flashy shortstop Jose Reyes, potential pitching ace Josh Johnson and steady left-hander Mark Buehrle. Then came the delicate, frenzied negotiations with the Mets that landed erudite.knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the National League's Cy Young Award winner in 2012. The book examines the challenges that Reyes, Buehrle and Dickey faced in their formative years and during the rocky 2013 season. It is also replete with details about Brett Lawrie, the team's lone Canadian, whose kinetic style of play is a double-edged sword; Jose Bautista, the two-time home-run champion whose crown began to slip during a difficult 2013 season; Munenori Kawasaki, the genial, quirky infielder who became an overnight fan favourite; and Anthopoulos himself, who, by season's end, was inciting the fury of the same fans who had praised him as a genius a few months earlier. Featuring insightful analysis and a colourful collection of candid photos, "Great Expectations" is a fascinating tale of a season gone wrong.
