(South African Light Horse) The same Regiment in which Winston Churchill served after his escape during the Boer War. Adlard Died of Wounds at Mooirivier in Natal on 31 January 1900.(see scans from www.AngloBoerWar.com) Adlard's initials are incorrect on his QSA.(Named as "W"). Baden-Powell,  by a veteran of the First Boer War of 1881.   This item is an ORIGINAL period piece,  hand written around 1900 - dedicated to praising the exploits of Col. Baden-Powell in his defence of Mafikeng by the besieging Boer forces. The author has penned multiple short poems, in which he promotes Baden-Powell as the epitome of British stoicism in the face of adversity. References are made to the Boer General Cronje, describing him in a non-flattering manner.   Baden-Powell's gallant defence of the town is noted as being worthy of the Victoria Cross as seen fit by an individual who once fought against the Boer forces 20 years prior.   A personalised and reflective item - which captures the essence of British public opinion during 1900, as the course of the conflict was unfolding.
