About the product 8vo; black cloth-backed brown boards, with metallic copper lettering to spine; laminated dustwrapper; pp. xii + 228, incl. index; tables. Near fine condition."It has generally been assumed that democracy, involving competition between contending parties within a constitutional framework which allows a free choice for the electorate, is not a viable form of politics in Africa and is largely irrelevant in a continent dominated by the authoritarianism of single-party and military rule. In Democracy in Black Africa: Survival and Revival, John A. Wiseman argues in detail, for the first time, that such a view is not only unduly pessimistic but is at odds with the evidence. Concentrating on the continued existence of democracy in Africa rather than its collapse, on its successes rather than its failures, a reassessment of the role of democracy emerges which is at once both positive and realistic."

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Black Jerusalem tracks the events and people who shaped the growth of the HerdBuoys advertising agency through successful and sometimes not-so-successful new business acquisition. As the first (and still, only) black-owned advertising agency in South Africa, it was at the forefront of the 'change-management' occurring in the country from 1991 to 2006. With typical flair, humour and a sprinkling of mischief, Happy Ntshingila tells the behind-the-scene stories of advertising campaigns for clients such as SAA and Telkom - from working through the night and pretending to have an office, to dashing off to buy television sets minutes before a presentation. It is a story about big brands, creative energy and friendship in a country in transition. The book's title acknowledges (with a dose of levity) the root of the word Jerusalem, which means legacy, because of the large number of previously disadvantaged people who found a career in an area of marketing that before HerdBuoys had been denied them and who became some of South Africa's major ads people. Features Summary Black Jerusalem tracks the events and people who shaped the growth of the HerdBuoys advertising agency through successful and sometimes not-so-successful new business acquisition.. The friendship between Brian Titchner and Matthew Nchembe is born of a shared love of country - Africa.  Brian is the white son of old colonialists; Matthew is a black Mau Mau terrorist rehabilitated into a white man's world.  In the hunting lands of Kenya, Brian saves Matthew's life. Years later fate reunites them under the spires of Oxford.  Both dream of reshaping Africa - their Africa of the future.  But another love, for the same woman, drives them apart. Then, once more on African soil, comes their final, fateful meeting... Soft cover, fairly good condition.  The cover has some minor scuffing and creasing.  444 pages.

“While we acknowledge that all expressions of liberation theology are not identical, we must protest very strongly against the false divisions that some make: between black theology in South Africa and black theology in the United States, between black theology and African theology, and between black theology and Latin American liberation theology. But moving away from the illusioned universality of western theology to the contextuality of liberation theology is a risky business; one that cannot be done innocently. In the search for theological and human authenticity in its own situation, black theology does not stand alone. It is but one expression of this search going on within many different contexts. Until now, the Christian church had chosen to move through history with a bland kind of innocence, hiding the painful truths of oppression behind a facade of myths and real or imagined anxieties. This is no longer possible. The oppressed who believe in God, the Father of Jesus Christ, no longer want to believe in the myths created to subjugate them. It is no longer possible to innocently accept history “as it happens,” silently hoping that God would take the responsibility for human failure. The theology of liberation spells out this realization. For the Christian church it constitutes, in no uncertain terms, farewell to innocence.” Price: R150.00 Edition: First South African edition Published: 1977 Publishers: Ravan Press ISBN: 0869750666 Condition:Paperback in good condition with shelf wear around the edges and top and bottom of the spine. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours This intriguing memoir details in a quiet and restrained manner what it meant to be a committed black intellectual activist during the apartheid years and beyond. Few autobiographies exploring the `life of the mind' and the `history of ideas' have come out of South Africa, and N Chabani Manganyi's reflections on a life engaged with ideas, the psychological and philosophical workings of the mind and the act of writing are a refreshing addition to the genre of life writing. Starting with his rural upbringing in Mavambe in Limpopo province in the 1940s, Manganyi's life story unfolds at a gentle pace, tracing the twists and turns of his journey from humble beginnings to Yale University in the USA. The author details his work as a clinical practitioner and researcher, as a biographer, as an expert witness in defence of opponents of the apartheid regime and, finally, as a leading educationist in Mandela's Cabinet and in the South African academy. Apartheid and the Making of a Black Psychologist is a book about relationships and the fruits of intellectual and creative labour. In it, Manganyi describes how he used his skills as a clinical psychologist to explore lives - both those of the subjects of his biographies and those of the accused for whom he testified in mitigation; his aim always to fi nd a higher purpose and a higher self. Features Summary This intriguing memoir details N. Chabani Manganyi's reflections on a life engaged with ideas, the psychological and philosophical workings of the mind and the act of writing... (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) Stephen Lungu was the oldest son of a teenage mother, married off by her parents to a much older man and living near Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). When he was three his mother ran away, leaving him and his younger brother and sister in the reluctant care of an aunt. By 11 Stephen too had run away, preferring life on the streets. He slept under bridges and scavenged from white folks' dustbins. As a teenager he was recruited into an urban gangs, the Black Shadows, which burgled and mugged with a half-focused dream of revolution. When an evangelist came to town, Stephen was sent to fire bomb the event, carrying his bag of bombs and mingling with the crowd. Instead he stayed to listen...Today Stephen is Africa's Billy Graham, an international evangelist who regularly speaks in UK, US and Europe. Format:Paperback Pages:256
