The myth of female beauty challenges every woman, every day of her life. Naomi Wolf exposes the tyranny of the beauty myth through the ages and its oppressive function today, in the home and at work, in literature and the media, in relationships between men and women, between women and women. With pertinent and intelligent examples, she confronts the beauty industry and its advertising and uncovers the reasons why women are consumed by this destructive obsession. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days The Hero and His Shadow introduces a psychological perspective on the history, development and present myths of Israeli society. Erel Shalit focuses on the actualization of the Zionist myth, which depended on a small group of individuals to transform the idea into matter by merging personal identity with collective idea. He finds that this process emanates from the close proximity of the life of the individual and the life of the collective in Israel. Shalit searches for the psychological relationships and motivations of the people of Israel as they evolved from a movement into a nation of people guided by similar ideals. Shalit also explores the psychological consequences of Israel's wars, from independence to the present war of terror, from a personal and a psychoanalytic perspective, with social examples and clinical vignettes. Recognizing the use of the images of the pioneer-farmer, the guardsman, and the warrior, which became admired hero-ideals, he delves into the shadow side of the guiding myths of modern Israel, such as Peace vs. Greater Israel. Here he found feelings of hubris, weakness, arrogance, and despair. The mythological background of the archetypal struggle between Isaac and Ishmael, and the relationship between Jerusalem and the archetypal images of Wholeness and Satan are examined. Shalit exposes those aspects of past and present myths, which normally are repressed and left in the background. Features Summary The Hero and His Shadow introduces a psychological perspective on the history, development and present myths of Israeli society. Erel Shalit focuses on the actualization of the Zionist myth... Author Erel Shalit Publisher University Press of America Release date 20031230 Pages 212 ISBN 0-7618-2724-2 ISBN 13 978-0-7618-2724-5

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 20 - 25 working days Drawing upon previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander gives us a riveting account of Shackleton's expedition one of history's greatest epics of survival. And she presents the astonishing work of Frank Hurley, the Australian photographer whose visual record of the adventure was never before published comprehensively. Together, text and image re-create the terrible beauty of Antarctica, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew's heroic daily struggle to stay alive, a miracle achieved largely through Shackleton's inspiring leadership. The survival of Hurley's remarkable images is scarcely less miraculous: The original glass plate negatives, from which most of the book's illustrations are superbly reproduced, were stored in hermetically sealed canisters that survived months on the ice floes, a week in an open boat on the polar seas, and several more months buried in the snows of a rocky outcrop called Elephant Island. Finally, Hurley was forced to abandon his professional equipment; thereafter he captured some of the most unforgettable images of the struggle with a pocket camera and three rolls of Kodak film. Features Summary One of the best survival stories illustrated with Frank Hurley s superb expedition photographs Author Caroline Alexander Publisher Seaforth Publishing Release date 20171030 Pages 224 ISBN 1-5267-0878-7 ISBN 13 978-1-5267-0878-6

This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.
