Title: The Missing Piece | Kevin Lings Subtitle: Solving South Africa's Economic Puzzle Author: Kevin Lings Publisher: Pan MacMillan (2014) ISBN-10: 1770103767 ISBN-13: 9781770103764 Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 225 Dimensions: 23.4 x 15.3 x 2 cm +++ by Kevin Lings +++ At the time of South Africa's first democratic election in 1994 everyone agreed that poverty had to be uprooted, inequality reduced and the conditions for sustainable economic growth established. It was clear that the structure of the economy had to change and that land ownership, employment opportunities and access to essential services had to more closely match the needs of the entire population. Unfortunately, there was very little fundamental agreement about how this should be done. The Missing Pieces: Solving South Africa's Economic Puzzle looks at various aspects of our economy over the past 20 years in an accessible way - what has worked and what has fallen short - and looks into the next 20 years - what needs to be done in order to grow and sustain our economy - through focusing on the agricultural sector, redressing education policies and addressing our infrastructural backlog.

What can these facilitators do to enhance their listening and empathic skills? How can they create an environment of trust in which clients - be they individuals, goups, families, or communities - can develop and grow effectively? Person-Centred Facilitation presents the theory and practice of the person-centred approach to facilitating counselling, as developed by Carl Rogers. The text provides an introduction to the person-centred approach in relation to individuals, groups, families and communities. It offers a solid theoretical grounding which supports both academic learning and applied practice, and guides readers' understanding and self-development. Revised and updated, the fourth edition integrates values from an African cultural perspective, and reflects the importance of social justice as an element of the developmental counselling process. It offers a wealth of South African case studies, an entirely new section on family counselling, and an expanded focus on group work counselling. Other expanded areas include aspects of constructivism; cross-cultural communication; people in conflict, and the self of the facilitator, the latter two aspects having been integrated into the text of the various chapters. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days As the engines roar and the green flag waves, these stories tear across their rural landscape with the energy of a Winston Cup race. Like W.P. Kinsella's minor league ballplayers, Jonis Agee's drivers, pit crews, mechanics, and their families live in small towns, eat at truck stops, and have a hard time keeping their dreams from destroying their lives. From the garage to the kitchen table, from demolition derby to nascar, Agee's hapless heroes open our eyes as they take the wall. The wildly popular sport of auto racing is a backdrop in these stories for exploration of the creative and destructive aspects of obsession. In farmhouses, mobile homes, and roadside trailer courts, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters all try to figure out how to keep their families running as smoothly as their cars. Taking the Wall is rich with details about racing and rural life, and richer yet in insight into that part of the human spirit that just doesn't know how to quit. Agee takes a personal and compassionate look at a grab bag of individuals linked by obsession. Reviews Novelist (South of Resurrection) and short fiction (Bend This Heart) writer Agee's collection of bittersweet stories dissects the rough world of auto racing from the working-class perspectives of drivers, pit crews, fans, family and other hangers-on. While "taking the wall," crashing into it, is the worst possible scenario, Agee's characters secretly wish for the excitement, horror and suspense it offers: will the driver walk away from the fiery wreck? Domestic life unfolds around the racetrack throughout the collection. "The Pop Off Valve" is a monologue in which an unnamed narrator recounts her naovet in marrying a man obsessed with racing, and the wake-up call she received on her honeymoon 15 years ago at the Motor Speedway in Irish Hills, Mich., when not even a terrible accident could thwart her husband's devotion to his hobby. Her description of the crash is chilling: "the rescue workers used the jaws of life to pry what was left of the driver from the shattered burnt shell of the car." Nonchalantly, she adds, "We grilled steaks on the hibachi at dark, unable to see the bloody raw meat until we cut into it." Agee's parsimonious language is sta Features Summary Engines roar and checkered flags wave in these stories about the conflict between families, cars, and obsession.  Positive Parenting: The Importance Of Communication In Family Life by Margaret Fourie - Paperback   Parenting is a job for which we receive no training, there is no selection process, no exams, and no need to apply for a permit. Yet, when you become a parent, you hold the life and the future of another human being in your hands. This title will add tremendously to any parent's repertoire of skills. Dealing with communication as one of the crucial aspects of interpersonal relationships, it will help you give your children the very best, considered upbringing that they can have. While we may have different cultural contexts, parenting has eternal principles and our children have the same needs, fears and hopes. Probably the greatest of these is the deepest need of us all: to know that we are both valuable and valued simply for being ourselves. From this perspective, Positive parenting looks at the following: What do you wish for your child? providing structure for security; developing a good self-image in your child; teaching your child about feelings and how to verbalise them; forming good relationships; loving your child just for being; having fun with your child; spirituality.Positive parenting is an essential tool to help parents face the frightening and wonderful responsibility of being a parent in South Africa in the 21st century.

Run Racist Run Can we sometimes assume a racist motive?  Is there place for anger in dialogue on racism?          Can liberals be racist?          Should black people help white people understand racism?          Is white wealth because of racism, or hard work and good genes?          Should coloured people just call themselves black? In  Run Racist Run, Eusebius McKaiser explores the non-bloody aspects of contemporary South African racism. While vigorous public debates about racism rage on, McKaiser tackles questions about the true and complete nature of racism with the rigour and honesty we have come to expect from his writing. In a year when South African students have protested against colonialism's continued presence on university campuses, when acts of racism continue to erupt in social spaces, when brutal racism is witnessed in the United States and elsewhere, it's clear that we urgently need to journey into the heart of racism.McKaiser takes that journey in this new collection - raising new questions about race and racism, and offering original, provocative meditations on these themes. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) Johannesburg's evolution provides important insights into the history and transformation of South Africa as a whole. This work should therefore be of interest to readers who wish to understand the events that shaped South Africa in the successive eras of gold discovery, British colonization, Nationalist Party apartheid legislation, and transformation after 1994. The authors include information on the original indigenous inhabitants who occupied the area of the future city long before the first white settlers, and whose descendants, through their intensive labour on the gold mines, played a decisive role in the development of Johannesburg. The more than 600 alphabetical entries not only cover the economic and political history of the city but also give an account of its cultural aspects, including architecture, art, music and theatre. The authors have extended the scope of the book by including certain adjoining urban areas such as Sandton, Randburg, Soweto and Edenvale, some of which have only recently been brought into the orbit of Greater Johannesburg.;The detailed chronology which precedes the alphabetical entries highlights the important events which helped to determine the city's destiny. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days Advocate Thuli Madonsela has achieved in her seven years as Public Protector what few accomplish in a lifetime; her legacy and contribution cannot be over-stated. In her final days in office she compiled the explosive State Capture report and, before that, the report on President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla residence. Praised and vilified in equal measures, Madonsela has frequently found herself at centre stage in the increasingly fractious South African political scene. Yet, despite the intense media scrutiny, Madonsela remains something of an enigma. Who is this soft-spoken woman who stood up to state corruption? Where did she develop her views and resolve? This book attempts to answer these questions, and others, by exploring many aspects of Madonsela's life: her childhood years and family, her involvement in student politics, her contribution to the constitution, her life in law. Madonsela once described her role as Public Protector as being akin to that of the Venda traditional spiritual female leader, the Makhadzi, who whispers truth to the ruler. When the sounds of the exchanges between the ruler and the Makhadzi grow loud, Madonsela said, that is when the whispering has failed. No Longer Whispering to Power is about Thuli Madonsela's tenure as Public Protector, during which the whisper grew into a cry. It is the story of the South African people's attempt to hold power to account through the Office of the Public Protector. More significantly, this important book stands as a record of the crucial work Madonsela has done, always acting without fear or favour.
