Before the invention of the printing press, books were written out by hand, and were priceless objects. The most precious books were illuminated with gold or with bright colours. Initial letters were often highlighted either as decoration or to mark an important passage. This new colouring book is packed with a series of intricate letters carefully selected from the extensive collection of the British Library. The letters are sourced from medieval charters and seals, historical and literary manuscripts, from Virgil to Chaucer and Royal Statutes to the Book of Psalms. Each of the original letters is reproduced in colour, so that you can decide whether you prefer to choose your own colours, or to use the colours that the artist intended. With key facts about each of the letters and their source, this is the perfect book for history buffs and colouring-in fans alike. Paperback. English. Picador. 1985. ISBN: 9780330288125. In fair condition. First published in the Catalan language in Valencia in 1490, Tirant lo Blanc ('The White Tyrant') is a sweeping epic of chivalry and high adventure. With great precision and verve, Martorell narrates land and sea battles, duels, hunts, banquets, political maneuverings, and romantic conquests. Reviewing the first modern Spanish translation in 1969 (Franco had ruthlessly suppressed the Catalan language and literature), Mario Vargas Llosa hailed the epic's author as 'the first of that lineage of God-supplanters--Fielding, Balzac, Dickens, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Joyce, Faulkner--who try to create in their novels an all-encompassing reality.'

This rambunctious first novel by the author of the bestselling Corelli's Mandolin is set in an impoverished, violent, yet ravishingly beautiful country somewhere in South America.  Paperback in good condition. Published 1981.  This is the first book ever to be written deliberately for the right side of the reader's brain. Research work has shown that our usual thinking, dominated by language and logic, takes place in the left side of the brain. The right side of the brain works in images, whole patterns and undefined feelings... all of which cannot be verbalized. This non-verbal type thinking often works as what is loosely called 'intuition'. The text is enhanced  by drawings to show and explain the brain patterns at play.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days The "Gateway to Arabic Handwriting Book" has been written as part of the "Gateway to Arabic" series with a view to giving students the opportunity to learn, practise and acquire proficiency in a fluid style of Arabic handwriting. It is recommended that students should already have completed at least Book One of the "Gateway" series and be familiar with the Arabic alphabet before embarking upon this book. Although a number of handwriting styles are used in the Middle East, the style taught in this book, namely ruq'ah, is the most widespread and the easiest to learn. Compared to the printed style of Arabic, which is termed naskh, ruq'ah offers the advantage of being much quicker to write. The book has been organised so that identical naskh and ruq'ah texts appear on facing pages for ease of comparison and contrast. The first section sets out the letters of the Arabic alphabet in all their forms: initial, medial, final and isolate. The precise direction and sequence of pen movements for each letter have been clearly indicated through the use of numbered arrows. Having completed the presentation of the alphabet in all its forms, the book then provides the student with the chance to learn the ruq'ah ligatures and practise copying complete words and phrases, most of which would already be familiar to the Muslim student. A further opportunity for the reinforcement of handwriting skills is given through the copying of selective ayat (verses of the Qur'an). A translation of these verses is included on the page on which they appear. Features Summary Students of Arabic often begin by learning the more laborious, printed style of handwriting known as naskh. Part of the "Gateway to Arabic" series, this book teaches the quicker...
