This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Though African Americans have served as foreign reporters for almost two centuries, their work remains virtually unstudied. In this seminal volume, Jinx Coleman Broussard traces the history of black participation in international newsgathering. Beginning in the mid-1800s with Frederick Douglass and Mary Ann Shadd Cary the first black woman to edit a North American newspaper African American Foreign Correspondents highlights the remarkable individuals and publications that brought an often-overlooked black perspective to world reporting. Broussard focuses on correspondents from 1840 to modern day, including reporters such as William Worthy Jr., who helped transform the role of modern foreign correspondence by gaining the right for journalists to report from anywhere in the world unimpeded; Leon Dash, a professor of journalism and African American studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who reported from Africa for the Washington Post in the 1970s and 1980s; and Howard French, a professor in Columbia University s journalism school and a globetrotting foreign correspondent. African American Foreign Correspondents provides insight into how and why African Americans reported the experiences of blacks worldwide. In many ways, black correspondents upheld a tradition of filing objective stories on world events, yet some African American journalists in the mainstream media, like their predecessors in the black press, had a different mission and perspective. They adhered primarily to a civil rights agenda, grounded in advocacy, protest, and pride. Accordingly, some of these correspondents not all of them professional journalists worked to spur social reform in the United States and force policy changes that would eliminate oppression globally. Giving visibility and voice to the marginalized, correspondents championed an image of people of color that combatted the negative and racially construed stereotypes common in the American media. By examining how and why blacks reported information and perspectives from abroad, African American Foreign Correspondents contributes to a broader conversation about navigating racial, societal, and global problems, some of which we continue to contend with today. Author: Philip Theron; Publisher: Manx; ISBN 9781920147457; 10 x new soft cover copies available. T he many adventures of Howard have been handed down from children to their parents for countless centuries. To this day these adventures are still told under the stars around the fire, soon after sunset on the eastern plains of Southern Africa when the raucous, piercing, pre–historic-like clarion of Hadedas can be heard as they glide to their favourite tree to roost for the night. Howard, driven by irresistible curiosity and a tenacious, non–negotiable urge for adventure, breaks from the mould and sets out on a journey far from his home in the sub–tropics of Mkhuze in the heart of Zululand, to the mysterious hinterland of Ghost Mountain, trees, bones, ghosts, wild animals and things. His jaunts have been related to the author ‘personally’, and in great detail. Howard wrote this novel for children, in an oddly humorous and informative style; to read to your disbelieving parents. Most of Howard’s adventures to the Valley of Bones, and an outrageous ghost party, are true. Admittedly some are truer than others but which, is left for you, the reader, to decide. “Both the young and the young at heart can be eternally thankful that these adventures didn’t remain untold. Quirky, funny, curious and determined, Howard the Hadeda is an intriguing creation and a storyteller of note — the perfect companion if you want to let your imagination take wing. So fly away, and go see what’s beyond that horizon! A few pages in back of book give some factual fun informaiton about hadedas... some love them... some love to hate them. They, like us, are from Africa. So there. Bookmark included. *Offers on lot of 5 will be considered. Shipping charges for 10 will be a single charge of R67, to main urban centres. * Please add R67 to standard shipping charge, for shipping to outlying (not main) centres in SA, for courier delivery service. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days In 2011 the world was shocked when the news broke that Joost van der Westhuizen, known for years as the golden boy of South African rugby and a former Springbok captain, had been diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND). This rare condition attacks the central nervous system, causing progressive disability. There is no known cure. All who have seen Joost in action will know that he is not one to give up without a fight. His game-changing prowess as a brilliant scrum half is now focused on a battle for survival and, more importantly, on making a difference to the lives of others with the disease. In a race against time, Joost has a dream to fulfil. He says: "In the beginning you go through all the emotions and you ask, 'Why me?' It's quite simple. 'Why not me?' If I have to go through this to help future generations, why not me?" His acceptance of his symptoms is equally pragmatic: "One day you can't move your arm, another day you don't have speech. Every day you are reborn and you take the day as it comes." Glory Game - The Joost van der Westhuizen Story is a compelling narrative of redemption set against the backdrop of an illustrious career in rugby. It is the story of a modern-day warrior forced to face his own human frailty. Joost shows us that beyond ambition, success and fame lies the true wealth of family and friends, and that within a ravaged body the spirit can remain invincible. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours The Guptas, arguably South Africa¿s most infamous family, have dominated news headlines for many years. But the landing of a commercial airliner packed with wedding guests at Air Force Base Waterkloof in 2013 sparked the most severe onslaught of public outrage the politically connected family had endured up to that fateful day. Since then, they have become embroiled in allegations of state capture, of dishing out cabinet posts to officials who would do their bidding, and of benefiting from lucrative state contracts and dubious loans. The Republic Of Gupta examines the various controversies surrounding the family and explores the path that took the brothers Ajay, Atul and Rajesh Gupta from an obscure town in India to the inner circle of South African president Jacob Zuma. This book investigates: What were the Guptas up to during Thabo Mbeki¿s tenure as president? What role did they play in Zuma¿s dramatic rise to power? How do they get senior government officials to do their bidding? What is it like being in the family¿s employ? What does state capture really involve? Unpacking these and other questions, Pieter-Louis Myburgh delves deeper than ever before into the Guptas¿ business dealings and their links to prominent South African politicians, and explains how one family managed to transform an entire country into The Republic Of Gupta. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) There is a paradox about Africa: it remains a subject that attracts considerable attention yet rarely is there a full appreciation of its complexity. African historiography has typically consisted of writing Africa for Europe-instead of writing Africa for itself, as itself, from its own perspectives. The History of Africa redresses this by letting the perspectives of Africans themselves take center stage. Authoritative and comprehensive, this book provides a wide-ranging history of Africa from earliest prehistory to the present day-using the cultural, social, political, and economic lenses of Africa as instruments to illuminate the ordinary lives of Africans. The result is a fresh survey that includes a wealth of indigenous ideas, African concepts, and traditional outlooks that have escaped the writing of African history in the West. The new edition includes information on the Arab Spring, the rise of FrancAfrica, the presence of the Chinese in Africa, and the birth of South Sudan. The chapters go up to the present day, addressing US President Barack Obama's policies toward Africa. A new companion website provides students and scholars of Africa with access to a wealth of supporting resources for each chapter, including images, video and audio clips, and links to sites for further research. This straightforward, illustrated, and factual text allows the reader to access the major developments, personalities, and events on the African continent. This groundbreaking survey is an indispensable guide to African history. Format:Paperback Pages:436

'It is never what you worry over that comes to pass in the end. The real catastrophies are always different - unimagined, unprepared for, unknown...' What if our 24-hour day grew longer, first in minutes, then in hours, until day becomes night and night becomes day? What effect would this slowing have on the world? On the birds in the sky, the whales in the sea, the astronauts in space, and on an eleven-year-old girl, grappling with emotional changes in her own life..? One morning, Julia and her parents wake up in their suburban home in California to discover, along with the rest of the world, that the rotation of the earth is noticeably slowing. The enormity of this is almost beyond comprehension. And yet, even if the world is, in fact, coming to an end, as some assert, day-to-day life must go on. Julia, facing the loneliness and despair of an awkward adolescence, witnesses the impact of this phenomenon on the world, on the community, on her family and on herself.   ** Shipping within South African boundaries ONLY **

Paperback. English. Spearhead Books. 2000. In fair/good condition. The seed that grew into this guide was planted twenty years before it was published in the newspaper archives of Rhodes University, South Africa. As a journalism student the author was leafing through an old newspaper researching an assignment when he was struck dumb by a cartoon that, in just a few brushes, conveyed more than he could ever hope to write on the subject. This drawing of South Africa's political battlelines has produced not only a fascinating and informative look at the world of South Africa's political cartoons, but also at South African politics and journalism - a world cartoons portray in a way words cannot. Every day most major newspapers carry a cartoon comment on some topical subject or event- mostly political in nature. The reader's reaction to this supposedly humorous comment may vary from a wry smile to an agreeable full belly laugh, from outrage to righteous indignation.;What the reactions have in common is that they are emotional rather than reasoned responses that mask the messages in the cartoons. In Penpricks not only are the messages revealed, but at the same time the reader will glimpse South African politics from the other side of the mirror that the South African press holds up to its unique society.

Blackout The Eskom Crisis - James-Brent Styan - Jonathan Ball - 2015 - Paperback. In 1998 the South African government was warned that the country was running out of electricity. Despite the warnings, the decision was taken not to invest in new power stations. Had the warnings been heeded, South Africa could have had a new power station up and running by 2006 and load shedding may never have happened. Instead, in 2007, as predicted, South Africa ran out of electricity.   Eight years later, the crisis has deepened and despite assurances to the contrary by government leadership, it has the potential to become the biggest post-apartheid crisis in South Africa. By 2015 load shedding cost the South African economy an estimated R2 billion per day. Is the situation getting better or worse? Are the interventions working or is a blackout inevitable? What can be done and what do future scenarios look like? Blackout: The Eskom Crisis provides a look at what’s happening to one of the greatest power utilities in the world, the greatest on the African continent. It deals with everything from load shedding to blackouts and unpacks the issues raging around candlelight dinners in households across South Africa today.

Book in great condition   ****   Last Days in Cloud Cuckooland is Boynton's account of the final gasps of white culture on the continent, from the flight of the Belgian refugees from the Congo in 1960 through the first years of Nelson Mandela's presidency in South Africa. In a series of graphic accounts of the human dramas marking this disorderly retreat, he illuminates the complexity and ambiguity of the role of the whites in Africa. They "were never a unified gang of coldhearted supremacists," he writes, "any more than the blacks in Africa have been a saintly group of idealists and altruists." It is an evocative story, and as it unfolds the author is drawn toward a controversial conclusion. If the white colonials did a rather poor job of making Africa work, he argues, then their African successors have done considerably worse. "It was in Africa that my identity was forged," Boynton writes. "Somewhere amid the rapid dismemberment of colonial rule, the wars, and the triumph of black nationalism, I became a white African, and will remain so for the rest of my life, wherever I live." But he will probably not live in Africa, which has been changed forever. *N.B.*  If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.
