Eastern Cape Veld Flowers by Eily Gledhill 1981, 2nd edition, Published by the Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation of the Cape Provincial Administration, Cape Town Preface to the first edition and preface to the second edition by Eily Gledhill, 276 pages, 4 color plates. Fine line drawings by the author. There are 554 species from 125 families described. Hardcover in good condition, front and back covers are a bit stained, spine presents foxing. Owner's signature inside and his stamp on the title page. Pages clean, nice tight binding. ~ Highly collectable book. Eily Gledhill (1914-2007) described a number of new species and worked on a revision of the genus Albuca. She also published ‘The genus Dioscorea in the Cape Province west of East London' in 1967. Many of her numerous publications were illustrated by herself with accurate black- and-white drawings. Furthermore, her book published in 1969 and with a second edition in 1981, The Eastern Cape veld flowers, in which she describes 554 species from 125 families, each illustrated by her fine line drawings, is still of great value to students of botany and the public at large  In the preface she writes: ‘If this guide assists owners of land and visitors to know more about the plants of the eastern Cape, it will have achieved its object, for any one who becomes interested in this unique flora cannot fail to realise why it needs to be protected’. She coined the term bonte veld which has become recognized as a veld type and is widely used. Eily was honoured in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II, the sovereign head of the order, by her promotion to Dame of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Eily was a member of the British Ecological Society, the Royal Society of South Africa, the Botanical Society of South Africa, the Van Riebeeck Society and the South African Ornithological Society.   Please judge from pictures:       Please note: Payment must be made within three days of auction close.    Please have a look at all my Items here!!

Author: Philip Theron; Publisher: Manx; ISBN 9781920147457; 10 x new soft cover copies available. T he many adventures of Howard have been handed down from children to their parents for countless centuries. To this day these adventures are still told under the stars around the fire, soon after sunset on the eastern plains of Southern Africa when the raucous, piercing, pre–historic-like clarion of Hadedas can be heard as they glide to their favourite tree to roost for the night. Howard, driven by irresistible curiosity and a tenacious, non–negotiable urge for adventure, breaks from the mould and sets out on a journey far from his home in the sub–tropics of Mkhuze in the heart of Zululand, to the mysterious hinterland of Ghost Mountain, trees, bones, ghosts, wild animals and things. His jaunts have been related to the author ‘personally’, and in great detail. Howard wrote this novel for children, in an oddly humorous and informative style; to read to your disbelieving parents. Most of Howard’s adventures to the Valley of Bones, and an outrageous ghost party, are true. Admittedly some are truer than others but which, is left for you, the reader, to decide. “Both the young and the young at heart can be eternally thankful that these adventures didn’t remain untold. Quirky, funny, curious and determined, Howard the Hadeda is an intriguing creation and a storyteller of note — the perfect companion if you want to let your imagination take wing. So fly away, and go see what’s beyond that horizon! A few pages in back of book give some factual fun informaiton about hadedas... Bookmark included. *Offers on lot of 5 will be considered. Shipping charges for 10 will be a single charge of R67, to main urban centres. * Please add R67 to standard shipping charge, for shipping to outlying (not main) centres in SA, for courier delivery service. Please contact for revised courier fee if buying multiple books in a single order. Alternative: SAPO ordinary parcel service @ R66 for first item; thereafter R6.50 per additional item. ** New courier option: Paxi service between Pep outlets countrywide -- service takes approx. 7 days for delivery. This service is especially convenient for customers in outlying regions. (Smaller parcels: R50; large parcels: R80).
