The genus Ooophytum is restricted to the quartz fields of the Knersvlakte in the north of the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The plants grow in clusters of elongated, fused, papillate leaves. In late spring, white papery sheaths form, enclosing the new leaf pair. In this regard they resemble Conophytum. The plants are inactive during the summer and blossom during the winter. The need bright light, warmth, and adequate water during their active season if leaves and flowers are to develop properly. They are propagated by seed and cutting.
