Sterculia quinqueloba Seeds Common Names: Five-Lobed Sterculia, Large Leaved Star Chestnut Sterculia is a genus colloquially termed the tropical chestnuts. The scientific name is taken from Sterculius of Roman mythology, who was the god of manure; this is in reference to the unpleasant aroma of the flowers of this genus (e.g., Sterculia foetida). Sterculia species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the leaf-miner Bucculatrix xenaula, which feeds exclusively on the genus. Sterculia quinqueloba or Large leaved star chestnut as it is commonly known is a tree that reaches 25 meters in height. It has silvery white bark and large hairy leaves that turn a beautiful yellow & gold during autumn. From summer to autumn it bears small yellowish flowers. ASTER COLOUR CARPET WHITE – CALLISTEPHUS CHINENSIS The Aster is one of the best flowers to grow for late summer and autumn blooms. Asters come in blue, purple, red, pink, and white each with a yellow center. The name Aster comes from the ancient Greek word for “star.” Asters make for good cut flowers that have a long lasting vase life. Aster seeds should be sown in well-draining, average garden soil in a sunny area after the last frost of the season. The plant grows best in full sun. It will tolerate light shade but growth will be less compact and blooming will be less prolific. Sow seeds in rows 38 to 45cm apart and cover with 6mm of soil. Keep the soil evenly moist and seedlings should appear in 14 to 21 days.   View our other items by clicking on the shield:

Wurmbea stricta Seeds Common Names: Vleiblommetjie, Marshflower Wurmbea is a genus is the Colchicaceae family from sub-saharan Africa and Australia. The rootstock is a corm and flowers are star or trumpet-shaped. Scantily known in cultivation, the starry pink-and-white flowers of this easily grown cormous plant really deserve a place in containers, shallow garden ponds and rock garden pockets. Wurmbea stricta is a deciduous, winter-growing geophyte reaching up to 0.6 m high. The subterranean storage organ is a deep-seated, irregularly shaped corm surrounded by dark brown membranous outer tunics, and produces three narrow, very straight, erect or suberect, dark green leaves that resemble knitting needles. Its striking star-shaped flowers are produced alternately along an elongated spike, the tepals varying in colour from pure white to pale pink. Each tepal has a small claw at the base and two prominent, deep pink glands that produce nectar. Vast quantities of seed are produced in attractive erect, narrowly egg-shaped capsules. Wurmbea stricta, together with Wurmbea punctata, differ from most other wurmbea species by having their petals completely separate rather than being joined at the base into a short or long tube. Wurmbea punctata is a smaller plant with white to ddep pink pink flowers and lance-shaped leaves, occurring on stony hillsides and seeps in the Western Cape. Asclepias, the milkweeds, is a genus of herbaceous perennial, dicotyledonous plants that contains over 140 known species. Pollination in this genus is accomplished in an unusual manner. Pollen is grouped into complex structures called pollinia (or "pollen sacs"), rather than being individual grains or tetrads, as is typical for most plants. The feet or mouthparts of flower-visiting insects such as bees, wasps and butterflies, slip into one of the five slits in each flower formed by adjacent anthers. The bases of the pollinia then mechanically attach to the insect, pulling a pair of pollen sacs free when the pollinator flies off, assuming the insect is large enough to produce the necessary pulling force (if not, the insect may become trapped and die). Pollination is effected by the reverse procedure in which one of the pollinia becomes trapped within the anther slit.           Asclepias syriaca commonly known as Common Milkweed, Butterfly Flower, Silkweed, Silky Swallow-wort and Virginia Silkweed is a milkweed that has fascinating two-tiered vivid flowers arrayed in a dense umbel. A five-pointed star or horn-like stamens comprises the upper tier, while the lower tier consists of the petals which bend backward or downward. The 90cm to 120cm tall milky sapped plants spread from an underground root system. They bloom from early to mid-summer. This plant differs from Showy Milkweed (A. speciosa) in having an unbranched stem. The plant contains cardiac glycosides allied to digitalins used in treating some heart disease. These glycosides when absorbed by monarch butterfly larvae whose sole source of food is milkweed foliage make the larvae and adult butterflies toxic to birds and other predators. A good choice for your large butterfly garden or wildflower meadow. The plant attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
