On August 24, 1991, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine that opened a new era in the development of Ukraine as a sovereign state. On the obverse of the coin there are: the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine in the centre and the cruciform image of rushnyks (Ukrainian embroidered decorative towels); between the rushnyks there are portraits of the most outstanding personalities of different epochs of our history together with the legends: ??????? ??????, ????? ????????, ??????? ???????????, ?????? ????????????; below against the background of a rushnyk there is indicated the coin minting year 2011 and the semicircular inscriptions: ???????????? ???? ??????? (National Bank of Ukraine) (above) and coin denomination (below): ?`??? ??????? (five hryvnias).
