Mechnikov is one of the founders of evolution embryology, immunology and microbiology, who had discovered the phagocytosis phenomenon, had developed the phagocytic theory of immunity (1883). And even now ideas of the scientist have contributed to development of various fields of biology and medicine. On the coin obverse on the right there is depicted a cell under a microscope - a conventionalized phagocytosis process; on the left there is 2005, the coin issue year and the small National Emblem of Ukraine. Around the coin circumference there are the inscriptions: ???????????? ???? ??????? (National Bank of Ukraine) (on the left), the NBU Mint logotype and ??? ?????? (2/ hryvnia) (beneath).
