SILVER COIN FROM THE WRECKED MERENSTEIN . IN SOUTH AFRICA
A silver coin ( Silver Rider?) set in piece on conglomerate with buckshot, retrieved from the wreck of the Merenstein by divers from The Atlantic Underwater Club in the early 's. The Merenstijein (aka Merenstein) was on her way the the Dutch East Indies with a mixed cargo, amongst which were coins discontinued from use in Holland in the 's, when she was wrecked off Jutten Island, Saldana bay in April . The coins were for re-use in Java and Borneo. These silver coins are very collectable world wide as they few and far between. What makes this one so unique is that it is a one of kind, set in a piece of conglomerate together with buckshot. The coin has been under the sea for the last 270 years or so, and is in good condition. It came into my hands in or at an auction held by The Atlantic Underwater Club at the then President Hotel, Sea Point. Silver Coin & Conglomerate. ditto. Buckshot, Conglomerate and Silver Coin. ditto. Conglomerate with Coin.
