SAXA VORD RFC RUGBY JERSEY IN SOUTH AFRICA
RAF Saxavord RFC was a rugby team based at RAF Saxavord at Saxa Vord in Unst. Their remote location made it difficult for other teams to play them, including ones from Shetland itself. With the closing of the RAF base, the rugby team went as well. RAF Saxavord was a British Cold War military installation at Saxa Vord on Unst. Established in , it was RAF radar a nd communications base, set up to monitor Soviet activities and for British military broadcasting. Its logo was a Norse longship and its motto, "Praemoneo de Periculis" (I forewarn of Danger/Peril) The base even had its own rugby team - RAF Saxavord RFC With the demise of the Soviet Union in , and the rise of spy satellites, the base was seen as largely redundant, and closed in . The base has now been mothballed, but its menacing buildings are now being converted into a "residential natural and cultural heritage activity centre". Valhalla Brewery has also made overtures.
