While the akoya pearl is considered to be more rare and valuable than the freshwater pearl, it was a commercially produced pearl from Japan and China. It is still common to find top-quality akoya pearl strands retailing for more than R30000. Akoya pearls are the original classics. They are best known for their perfectly round shapes and fine reflective luster. They were the first pearls to ever be farmed more than 100 years ago, and the first to claim worldwide acceptance among all cultured pearls. These pearls were bought in Hong Kong in the early 60s and has been a family heirloom since. No chancers please.
