READ DESCRIPTION* RECOVERED WILKINSON 1897 PATTERN OFFICERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

 Recovered Wilkinson 1897 Pattern Officers Sword. This item was recovered from a Zulu kraal in the traditionally tribal area of Msinga, near Tugela Ferry in Zululand. It formed part of a large cache of confiscated sharp-edged weapons that had been accumulated in the former IFP stronghold, during factional disputes in the period 1990-1992.  The original history of the sword is unknown, except for the fact that it was intended for offensive use by those who had possessed it prior. Due to the rough conditions associated with the item's rural sojourn, the leather on the scabbard has expired and the steel basket handguard has been removed. However, the handle and blade are original and intact, with a few leather accoutrements surviving.
