ZULU WAR CENTENARY MEDALLION WAR CENTENARY ISSUE 1879- 1979. A beautiful set of medallions depicting different scenes from the Zulu War.  This is number 728 of 2000 issued.  Minted by the Historical Mint in 1979.  Each medallion depicts a different battle.  Each medallion contains 25 grams of sterling silver. A Gold Medal to Commemorate the Centenary of the the Zulu War Battle of Rorke's Drift and the Commanding Officer of the Defenders, John Chard, VC. Designed by Pagliari and struck at the Cape Mint in 1979. Further information at South African Commemorative Medals. 18ct Gold. Diameter 35.1 mm. Mass 24.0 gm. Pure gold content 0.57871 Troy oz. Stamped on the edge with the Cape Mint hallmarks for 18ct gold and date letter F for 1979. Also stamped with the issue number 240. Comes inside the original fitted case.      

 925 SILVER dIA +/- 33 mm and +/-200grms in original SA Historical Mint box with full history book of 25 pages and certificate of authenticity no. 146. All in excellent condition!!! HAPPY BIDDING!!!!

Following Lord Carnarvon's successful introduction of Federation in Canada, it was thought that similar political effort, coupled with military campaigns, might succeed with the African kingdoms, tribal areas and Boer Republics in South Africa. In 1874, Sir Henry Bartle Frere was sent to South Africa as High Commissioner for the British Empire to bring such plans into being. Among the obstacles were the presence of the independent states of the South African Republic and the Kingdom of Zululand and its army. Frere, on his own initiative, without the approval of the British government and with the intent of instigating a war with the Zulu, had presented an ultimatum on 11 December 1878, to the Zulu king Cetshawyo with which the Zulu king could not comply, including disbanding his army and abandoning key cultural traditions.   Bartle Frere then sent Lord Chelmsford  to invade Zululand after this ultimatum was not met.  The war is notable for several particularly bloody battles, including an opening victory of the Zulu at the Battle of Isandlwana, followed by the defeat of a large Zulu army at Rorke's Drift  by a small force of British troops. The war eventually resulted in a British victory and the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region.   Sold as seen in the images.
