Johannesburg (Gauteng)
Subtitle: And the People Who Made Them  Author: Eric Chaline  Publisher: Zebra Press () ISBN-10: X ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 256 Dimensions: 22.5 x 17 x 1.8 cm +++ by Eric Chaline +++ History's Worst Predictions peels back the layers of history to expose the credulity and absurdity of humanity's prophetic utterances. Every aspect of human life - religion, politics, science, economy, culture and war - has provided material for the most far-fetched and inaccurate of predictions.  This beautifully illustrated, full-colour volume contains photographs and maps that bring each chapter to life, depicting the people and institutions responsible for some of the most infamous predictions in human history.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

Charge! History's greatest Military Speeches - Steve Israel - 2007 - Hard cover in nearly new condition. One of the leading voices on national security issues in the U.S. Congress demonstrates how words have been sharp and powerful weapons of victory in this compilation of great military speeches that helped turn the tide of history. Among the dozens of inspirational speeches featured are: Moses instructing his followers to cross the Jordan River without him... Queen Elizabeth pledging to die with her soldiers as they faced the Spanish Armada... Patrick Henry choosing between liberty and death... Napoleon exhorting his troops as they marched on Egypt... Winston Churchill rallying his nation to victory... General Sir Montgomery refusing to retreat from Rommel... President Roosevelt preparing the American people for World War II... General Eisenhower fortifying his troops for the invasion of Normandy... President Reagan demanding that Gorbachev tear down the Berlin Wall... President George W. Bush encouraging America after 9/11... and more. Congressman Israel has included speeches that have motivated and mobilized, challenged and comforted. Some were blurted in the heat of combat, others were carefully written in places far removed from the brutality of the battlefield, but all will inspire readers with the courage that moved people forward against all odds. Each speech is introduced with an insightful historic context. This dramatic sweep of military history in the words of history's military leaders serves to reinforce the concept that the pen is mightier than the sword.

Hardcoverk. English. John Murray. 2008 270pp. In good condition with worn dw. War brings out the very best and worst in people although, frankly, its usually the latter. But for all our thousands of years of practice at this most dangerous art there is precious little evidence that we're either outgrowing it or getting any good at it. It is an occupation filled with heroism, genius, hubris, idiocy and blind panic all bought on at least in part by large measures of astonishingly good and bad luck - and they're all here in Charge! This is not a book filled with battle diagrams swarming with arrows or 100,000 word descriptions of the tactical basis for the Pastry War.

The island is about 1 mile (1.6 km) long, 0.3 miles (0.48 km) wide, and is 971 feet high at its highest point. This small island lies between the islands of Nevis and Montserrat, 56.2 kilometres (34.9 mi) southwest of Antigua. Redonda is closer to Montserrat than to any other island; it is located at 22.5 kilometres (14.0 mi) northwest of Montserrat, and 32 kilometres (20 mi) southeast of Nevis.Redonda is home to vast numbers of sea birds, and the island was an important source of guano before artificial fertilizers started to be mass-produced. Guano-mining operations started in the 1860s and ceased after the start of World War I. During these mining operations a few buildings and other installations were put in place on the island, and some physical remnants of that phase in its history are still visible. ____________________________________________________ Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

This is a Remarkable piece of the ZAR History. This letter was written on March 7th 1881 In Heidelberg Gauteng in the Governments House (now 60 Strydom Street) by Paul Krugers writer. Paul Kruger did not write himself, for he lost his thumb during his youth, He signed the letter - hence his signature is always a bit shaky. During this time Paul was Vice President of ZAR which adds alot of value to the letter!  This letters context is about the political issue of the surrender of Potchefstroom and more information presented on the site mentioned below. The letter is written in Dutch. Photos of the letter and it’s condition as below: Please note: international buyers, contact us for a shipping quote  For more information of the Surrender Of Potchefstroom, go to this site:   http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol014rj.html   Thank you for your interest in our product.  I enjoy helping you add to your collection!
