This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Before The Lost Get-Back Boogie appeared to wide acclaim in 1986, James Lee Burke had been out of print in cloth for thirteen years and his fifth novel had received a record 111 rejection letters. "LSU Press put me back in the game and turned my career around," Burke says. The novels and stories Burke had written during those years of rejection eventually became the stuff of the Dave Robicheaux series, which has earned him two Edgar Awards. Reviews of The Lost Get-Back Boogie now seem prescient. "This is the book that Burke was born to write--and you're grateful he did," wrote syndicated reviewer Nancy Pate. And from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "[It] was my introduction to Burke, and it is a cherished one. Burke demonstrates a rare ability to write an extraordinarily propulsive tale that borders on genre fiction without ever being less than literature." The book opens the day thirty-year-old Iry Paret leaves Louisiana's Angola state penitentiary, after serving two years for manslaughter, and follows him to Montana, where he hopes to stay cool and out of trouble by working hard on a ranch owned by the father of his prison pal, Buddy Riordan. Iry finds the fresh start he seeks, joins a weekend band, and even falls in love. But the Riordan family's problems deal Ire a new sort of trouble with some ultimately tragic consequences. The Lost Get-Back Boogie is a novel about essentially good people and their atempts to find their place in a changing, complicated world. And it is the work of James Lee Burke at the top of his form. A daring story of imprisonment and escape under the Nazi regime and a moving and engrossing symbol of resilience and integrity. by Lene Fogelberg by Leslie Gilbert-Lurie by Ali Eteraz by John Carlin by Isabella Leitner by John Hoskison by Doc Hendley by Melissa Cistaro by Cathy Glass by Erin Seidemann by Alan Parks by Abraham Bolden by Domingo Martinez by Richard Dawkins by Trudi Kanter by Jacky Donovan by Armstrong Diane by Alberto Granado 9781628723762 Paperback Jean Hlion was a noted French modernist painter and author. He was a member of the Free French Forces during World War II. His work later influenced Roy Lichtenstein, Nell Blaine, and Leland Bell. He died in 1987. Deborah M. Rosenthal, consulting editor for the Artists & Art series, is a New York painter and writer. She is a professor of art in the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Rider University. Jacqueline Hlion, the widow of the painter, lives in Paris. Editorial Reviews From the Publisher "A meticulously observed description of the lives of French POWs as virtual slaves of the Third Reich, with vivid delineations of both captors and captives." --The Wall Street Journal John Ashbery Jean Hlion was one of France's leading modernist painters, even before his capture by the Germans in 1940 when he was 33. His account of his adventures in captivity is both terrifying and funny (one of his tormentors was the appropriately-names Kommandofuhrer Jurk), somewhat in the Vein of Tarantino's film Inglorious Basterds. A best-seller after it was published in America while the war was still raging, it has remained for many, including Helion's legions of admirers in both France and the United States, a one-of-a-kind classic. It's wonderful to have it back in print again. The Wall Street Journal The French armistice with the Third Reich, signed by Vichy's aging Marshal Ptain on June 22, 1940, stipulated the following: "The French armed forces in the territory to be occupied by Germany are to be hastily withdrawn into the territory not to be occupied, and be discharged." No wonder, then, that hundreds of thousands of exhausted French soldiers allowed themselves to be encircled by German troops and held in barbed-wire enclosures pending their expected demobilization. Most believed they would be going home. The German high command had a different agenda. Hitler, who would break his pact with Stalin and invade the Soviet Union within a year of signing the Vichy agreement, planned to replace the German manpower needed for the Russian front with the labor of the surrendered French army. Trains crammed with prisoners would soon make the four-day journey to hastily constructed barracks at dozens of sites near the former Polish border. Such was the fate of close to a million and a half French prisoners of war, most of whom would not see their home again for five years; 25,000 would never return. In New York, in 1943, a detailed eyewitness account of the conditions in German POW camps was published by a French escapee, Jean Hlion (1904-87). Hlion was by then an internationally known painter who had been living in New York at the outbreak of World War II. He returned to France for military service, only to be part of the debacle that followed the German invasion. At the request of E.P. Dutton publishers, he set down his experience in "They Shall Not Have Me," a meticulously observed description of the lives of French POWs as virtual slaves of the Third Reich, with vivid delineations of both captors and captives. Written in English and never published in France, the book became a best seller, and its author found himself in demand for lectures and interviews, trying, as he said, to tell Americans what it was like to be hungry, devoured by lice, worked to the bone, and harassed and sometimes beaten by armed guards. Long a cult classic sought out by artist-admirers of Hlion, "They Shall Not Have Me" has now been reissued in Arcade's Artists and Art series, with an illuminating introduction by the artist Deborah Rosenthal. In an afterword, Hlion's widow, Jacqueline, has filled in information about those who helped in her husband's escape, members of a Resistance network whose identities he could not reveal at the time. Hlion arrived in France in 1940 in time to experience the military's disarray as French troops, believing they were to make a stand along the Loire, marched on clogged roads under strafing by German planes. Instead came the humiliating news of the armistice. Hlion was among the surrendered French soldiers shipped to a prison camp in Pomerania, near the Baltic Sea, from which he was sent to a local estate as a laborer. There the prisoners slept on lice-infested straw, subsisted on thin soup and hard bread, and spent the day digging and gathering potatoes; the temperatures were freezing, and adequate footwear and clothing were lacking. Things Fall Apart—the first volume of Chinua Achebe's masterpiece The African Trilogy—tells two intertwining stories, both centering on Okonkwo, a "strong man" of an Igbo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo's fall from grace in his world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of that world when European missionaries arrive in his village. Now with more than twenty million copies in print and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart forms one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments we have to the modern African experience as seen from within. Achebe does not merely capture life in an African village before the arrival of colonialism, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our own.

Book "Love Hope Marvels" by Bryan Hattingh - Signed and inscribed 2016   Love, Hope, Marvels is a collection of Bryan Hattingh’s realisations on the human condition, business, love, family, and creativity. It is filled with insightful essays, lucid musings, and exquisite photography, exhibiting a vision of Bryan’s colour-rich world. He has woven a tapestry of his perceptions and learning so that any reader might use those threads of Bryan’s experiences for his or her own tapestry of life, unlocking the reader’s potential to embrace all the colours of existence, and marvel at this wonderful experience called life. “In the context of the world … we need HOPE more than anything. And HOPE is brought by LOVE, and we will MARVEL at the outcome of this! Buy this book as a gift to you or someone, and start the journey of HOPE. Wonderful uplifting words in beautiful fonts and colours, accompanied by stunning photographs. A coffee table book … to grab for inspiration!” — Mardia van der Walt, Chairman of the Board of Directors: T-Systems South Africa; Director: Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce “Bryan writes with the sensitivity of one who has not simply observed the world, but instead dived in head-long into this thing we call life … His writing … goes from the deeply spiritual to the patently pragmatic … Bryan’s gift is to paint with an artist’s brush the journey of life so that it is both art and path at once … So many of the books … focus exclusively on our strengths and abilities and how to unleash these to win big in business. Bryan dares to remind us that we live lives in which we also fall in love. Love is a state of grace in which we allow ourselves to be weak and even vulnerable but ultimately redeemed by its power.” — Sindi Maboso Koyana, CEO Advanced Capital “As Coenraad [Jonker] points out in his introduction, [Love, Hope, Marvels] is something to be dipped into at leisure and at random, with the certainty that every page contains something very much worth reflecting on. If I had to pick a personal favourite text, it would be, ‘One of the greatest tasks of a leader is recognising, understanding and managing paradox’. This is a profound insight – and one that I’m truly grateful to see in print … [The] photos are magnificent – I refuse to pick a favourite among these. They’re all great.” — Sim Tshabalala, CEO Standard Bank.

I thank my God I speak in tongues more than you all. spoken by the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:18 Almost 40 years ago, John and Elizabeth Sherills book, They Speak with Other Tongues, ushered tens of thousands into the life-changing experience of speaking in tongues and the dynamic result of a closer walk with Jesus. In Chavdas new book The Hidden Power of Speaking in Tongues, we are once again reminded and carefully taught about the incredible possibilities available in speaking in tongues. It is an experience that hungry believers long to rediscover here in the twenty-first- century Church, as millions search for a more meaningful understanding and relationship with their Lord. Similar to the approach Joel takes in his novels, his desire is to draw readers into stories, anecdotes, and predictions in a way that builds confidence that allows Joel to share his faith in Jesus Christ and the reliability of Scripture as a guide to understanding the past and the future.  Drawing on his experience in Washington, his own exclusive interviews with world leaders, and his astute political acumen, Joel makes sense of the events surrounding the Middle East. He connects information in a way that will make you understand and really care about the world's most important events and how they impact your life—from gas prices to your bank account.    *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional books – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days "Discover South Africa's first black artist working in an international style. Like Monet, who was his first inspiration, Moses Tladi was a gardener and an artist. Born in remote Sekhukhuneland, east of Pretoria, South Africa, the son of a medicine-man who made a living by working in iron, and a mother who was a gifted potter, Tladi in his early childhood herded cattle in the dramatic hill-country around his home. His parents had become ""believers"" under the influence of the Berlin Missionary Society and he was educated at the Lobethal mission, at ga Phaahla. Tladi, like many young men of the time, went to the cities in search of work. It is not known how he encountered Herbert Read, but in the mid 1920s he found employment in Johannesburg as gardener to Read at his property in the fashionable suburb of Parktown. Tladi's talent was discovered by Herbert Read's daughters who were schoolgirls in the mid-1920s. Read took Tladi under his wing, and introduced him to the collector and philanthropist Howard Pim. Read and Pim promoted Tladi at public exhibitions from 1929 onwards. Pim died in1934, but Tladi continued to flourish, with Read as his patron until the outbreak of the Second World War." STUDIES IN A DYING COLONIALISM by Frantz Fanon -- 1989 Print Sisty years after it was written, this book remains relevant to an understanding of national liberation movements in the Third World, showing how relationships shift and cultural attitudes change as individuals and communities strive to redefine themselves. Written during the "Fifth Year of the Algerian Revolution", the title of the original French edition, it offers insights into the psychological and social conflicts of an oppressed people and those of their oppressors. The author also wrote "The Wretched of the Earth", "Toward an African Revolution" and "Black Skins, White Masks". An incisive and illuminating account of how, during the Algerian Revolution, the people of Algeria changed centuries-old cultural patterns and embraced certain ancient cultural practices long derided by their colonialist oppressors as primitive, in order to destroy those same oppressors. Fanon uses the fifth year of the Algerian Revolution as a point of departure for an explication of the inevitable dynamics of colonial oppression.  Soft cover book with rubbing and wear on the cover. This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.
