Two vintage Sterling silver World War badges for 1 bid. This lovely lot consists of: Vintage enamel Sterling silver WW1 SAC Signals/ SA Sein Corps sweetheart brooch or tiepin. I think that this brooch or tiepin dates to WW1. The badge is manufactured from enameled Sterling silver. It is in good condition - pin is intact.  Rare WW2 Sterling silver  "YMCA/ CVJM War Work For Service" badge. This badge was awarded to YMCA volunteers during WW2 for services rendered. The roles of the YMCA wartime volunteers varied, but basically involved the manning and operating of hostels for the benefit of the troops, rest-rooms for the troops and mobile canteen services.  This is a rare World War II YMCA-CVJM War Work for Service lapel badge made in the United Kingdom. The badge makers used of the Germanic acronym "CVJM" for Christliche Verein Junger Menschen, perhaps for Swiss or Dutch participants. It is in red and black enameled silver. Shortly after the Fall of France and the armistice June 1940, the newly installed Vichy government decided to simply annul the 1939 Croix de Guerre and institute their own version.  The Vichy version was very similar but with modified reverse dates and the ribbon was changed from green and red, to green and black. The colours are still bright. The boards are clean, square and unmarked, as are all the pages. Original price sticker on the back. Hardcover in red, white lettering. Corners and bottom of spine show slight shelf wear. Tight binding, clean inside, a beautiful book. Captives Courageous; South African prisoners of war in World War II is the ninth work in the South Africans at War series published by Ashanti Press. "Leigh has divided his book into two parts. In the first part, entitled "Into the bag", he details the capture of South Africans in the Western Desert and their rapid transition from efficient fighting men to often sickly and weak prisoners of war (POW). The Western Desert was an unforgiving environment in which to find oneself a prisoner of war. If passing fighters or bombers (of either side) did not "get" you the dysentry invariably did. The heat, lack of water and lack of compassion shown by Axis non-frontline troops towards South African prisoners of war are all documented by Leigh. He also highlights the differences South Africans experienced in the treatment meted out by Italians on the one hand and Germans on the other. Ironically this relationship was to change later in the war, when many South Africans were moved north into Germany after the collapse of Italy in mid-1943. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms.
